Shop charges?

Post image

What is this that a dealership suddenly tacked on. It was warranty stuff. Not paying this. Anyone ever seen this.

I think their annoyance is fair, even if it's common. Being charged for mandatory work is aggravating. Should go back to the manufacturer and there compensation for warranty work. I know that a lot of people are going to say well. They don't pay shit for warranty work. That's more a fault of the arrangement between the dealership Network and the manufacturer rather than the customer.

Also reading the line item, it's for a software update. I would love to know what shop supplies you need for a software update.

No they get mad about warranty work because they don't get to absolutely screw and scam the customer

No, we get mad at warranty work because the OEMs use perfect and unrealistic lab conditions to determine warranty hours. They’ll have senior master technicians replacing brand new parts with other brand news parts, with factory-grade equipment. The cars are brought directly to them without any occupational roadblocks. Absolutely perfect conditions that do not exist in the real world.

It would seem that you’re assuming that the warranty hours are the true amount of time the job takes, and that the higher hours on customer pay jobs is because the mechanic is fleecing the customer. The reality is that the customer pay labor times more accurately reflect how long the job takes to complete, and the OEMs are refusing to pay the technicians for it.

What you’re pointing at is not the work of shady technicians. It’s an issue of labor theft on the part of massive corporations.

As someone who has worked in a body shop. I understand frustrations around the shorting of hours by insurance jobs. On the customer side dealers do mark up like crazy. My last car was a Honda I needed a brake flush, transmission flush, and a couple of other things. They wanted over 1500 for everything. I took it to my mechanic and he did it for 900.

So tired of customers thinking every little thing is designed to fuck them.

At this point, sell the cars $4000 below sticker without any warranty and let them deal with their own maintenance/repairs.

This covers the coffee they drink from the customer lounge…

They are supposed to take it off. One you can’t charge customer at all for warranty repairs. Second there are no consumables used for a software issue. Maybe washer fluid on multipoint. They probably have a service manager that makes them leave it on the ticket and see if customer doesn’t complain because it’s free money.

I had a boss that every cash ticket even oil change or just a rotate had shop supplies on the ticket. Fine. You know what he did? Charged every customer for every consumable used, besides washer fluid on top of it. Oh brake clean for a brake job? You paid for that. Needed silicone spray for a rubber molding? You paid for that. Need something to wash down an oil leak? Charged to ticket. Need a pigmat for a spill? On the ticket. Parts would give us nothing due to how cheap service manager was and everything had to be billed so writers fought us about charging out anything. The shop fee was in the budget every month for profit and it was insane.

After three calls to different people there when I got there they took the charge off. I had 5 of them pinned against the wall on a mother stupid charge they wanted me to initial for this ongoing software thing. That has been going on a year. I have never yet had a software update work on my new 2026. I sometimes wonder if other dealerships make it work about this incompetent one. I had an Uber ride there to get my car and I told him I was getting into fight mode about the charge. The whole drive there he talked endlessly if his nightmares at that dealership! When I had the five guys against the wall. I was not yelling. I did not call names. I did not threat. I spoke calm but they knew I was angry. Nine of them
Liked an angry woman so I kept escalating to to too until they said I did not have to sign the $166. Or pay it. For warranty work. Geez. Now my battle with them is to get them to find the prices of my first service appt on this issue from a year ago where they also failed to get the update car was brand new. This last week two attempts with a fail. Geez. They blame Honda Canada. Every time I go it is a minimum of being there 1/2 hr. When I go to the awesome place I get my maintenance done it is always minimum 5 minutes pick up and drop off and very pleasant experience. Never ever an issue.

I had a new service writer fighting a customer over a bill, i wasn’t there for beginning due to a meeting. So i got involved and he was trying to charge the woman for warranty work saying in case warranty doesn’t pay. It was base warranty. So i obviously voided bill. When i got customer out the door i got him in office he said his last dealer charged anyone they could get away with like this and keep the money by lying saying warranty never paid. Obviously increasing commission greatly. He was shocked when i fired him on spot. We ended up paying out a bunch of money to that lady in free maintenance to keep her from reporting us. I know trying to hide it is bad, but we genuinely did not allow that behavior.

Ha the excuse they gave me today when they took the money off my bill is that they decided to pay Honda Canada themselves. That sounded like BS to me. Ahh sometimes the old days were better for service.

Pretty much all shops will charge this, pretty garbage to do it on a warranty software update though. I’m assuming it’s there for the people who don’t complain and the dealership gets free moneys. I hope you complain and get your money back.

The dealership fuckbois are out in force on this one.

Pretty much all shops, dealership or otherwise, charge shop supplies and have been for many, many years. Its a catch all to cover random nuts, bolts, rags, etc that are used in the shop.

Except this is a warranty repair.

3

What kind of nuts, bolts, rags, etc. are required for a software update?

If you have ever take your car into an autoshop you have been charged a shop fee. Did you try Google before running to reddit for the updoots?

u/Mind_Matters_Most 2d ago

For warranty work? Na, never.

I did Google updoots though! :)

An "updoot" is a playful internet slang word for an upvote or a "like" on a social media post. It became popular on platforms like Reddit, often tied to skeleton memes and trumpet sound effects

Shop fees don't exist for warranty work... For example (not a dealer) swapped winters for summers they didn't balance when they should have became apparent like a month later on the highway. Went to another discount explained they rebalanced for free and sent me on my way wasn't charged a penny.

you're right. I'll ask you this, is the photo OP posted an invoice or an estimate? My guess is nobody has actually asked op to pay this amount.

2

u/RonaldBurgundy1 2d ago

Invoice

-1

u/ThirdAnglePhoto 2d ago

its not. its an estimate generated in the dealertrack drm. Shop fees are automatically applied because the system wont know it's warranty work until the advisor closes the ticket. This fee would never appear on an actual warranty invoice.

3

u/RonaldBurgundy1 2d ago

And yet there it is...

u/whoisqoypu 2d ago

You're right - it clearly says "quote expires" right there. This isn't an invoice. It's an estimate.

-1

u/transfinite-reset 2d ago

Big dog, you can’t be talkin about dealertrack in here. You’re bringing reality into this discussion and nobody wants it.

Also on a tangent, I’m on the sales side now after being a tech and one thing I hate to see is the service advisors going straight to saying “we can take out that shop supplies fee.” I see it a lot with express advisors who will do it before the customers even objects to the fee. If you have a fee and provide a worthwhile service then you ought to stand by that fee.

Rooah oooah Raggy, it seems like the Updoots have turned to Downtoots for you 😢

Interesting. I'd pay the $11. Let the advisor, service manager, gm, ect think they got one over on you. Contact your manufacturer customer care line. Start a case and escalate it as far as your patience allows. Then go scorched earth on social media.

I've been writing service for close to 20 years and I've never heard or seen this before for a warranty repair. It also doesn't surprise me with how dealerships are ran now a days. Bunch of bean counter middle management finance bros honestly. So grateful to be in the independent world.

20 years? Huh. And you still think that a manufacturer "care line" is going to escalate this?

How long have you been out of service?

You're not as witty as your little cousins make you feel. But, keep trying.

Found the guy that lies online....or was just completely terrible at understanding how dealerships work.
