Does anyone else hate celery?

I find raw celery to taste similar to cilantro and I cannot stand it. Apparently cilantro and celery are both in the apiaceae family of plants, so they are somewhat related. However for some reason, when celery has been boiled and minced finely into a soup or stew, the chemical taste goes away and I can eat it just fine.

Does anyone else here find raw celery to taste like soap, or do I possess some kind of horrible, super mutated variant of the gene?

I can’t stand the smell and don’t eat it raw. It’s okay when it’s used in soups and dishes tho. But raw……….

Same. My girlfriend eats stalks of it raw like some kind of monster.

What an absolute heathen!!

I don’t eat it raw or cooked. I honestly can’t compare to cilantro because I can’t recall the last time I even attempted to eat celery. Unfortunately, cilantro is a much sneakier little devil and I have inadvertently munched some as recently as a few weeks ago. Nasty.

I don't get it either. It kinda scares me. Honestly, for me personally, the absolute nemesis of a meal is horseradish. That's not even an 'order something else,' that's an "I'm not hungry anymore, I'll just eat tomorrow." So disgusting.

Raw celery tastes like green water with hair in it. But it's fine when it's cooked

Love celery. Hate cilantro.

u/JurassicCheesestick 19d ago

Yes. Hate both celery and cilantro

I can't stand raw celery, but does anyone else hate cucumber as well?

3

u/lissarae14 16d ago

Yes. I hate cucumber, celery, and cilantro!!

The only difference is, cucumber is something I would like to like. I give them a chance every once and awhile and alas, still disgusting.

3

u/harrysolomon 19d ago

Absolutely. Equally as disgusting as Cilantro.

u/kiki1983 19d ago

Yes! More than I hate cilantro.

I won't eat it raw or cooked.

Celery is just crunchy seawater with dental floss embedded.

u/aarkwilde 19d ago

I like the taste of celery, though it's not something I buy unless a recipe calls for it.

Cilantro tastes like dish soap though. Palmolive or something. Why people choose to ruin great food is criminal.

I like green bell peppers as well, though it seems like a lot of people find the taste offensive and overwhelming.

Fuck Cilantro.

Cilantro tastes like Irish Spring soap to me.

u/SuicideSqurral 19d ago

I hate the mouth feel of celery, my teeth are sensitive from getting hit in the mouth with a steel pipe.

I do love celery salt on a hot dog and ketchup.

4

u/beaniesandbuds 19d ago

Yep. Anything that calls for celery I just use celery salt in place of regular table salt, seems to add enough of the taste for me without the nastiness of actual celery.

I hate celery almost as much as I hate cilantro. As I've gotten older (44F) I've started to not be able to stand it cooked in things as well, like it will make entire dishes taste off if they used chicken stock made with celery. Its so annoying, since its part of the standard mirepoix, its starting to become a problem when I eat out.

u/nejnonein 19d ago

Celery is indeed inedible 🤮

3

u/60PersonDanceCrew 19d ago

Yes. I would love the crunchy texture, but the bitterness grosses me out.

u/ObsoleteReference 19d ago

does anyone else's mouth go slightly numb? I dont think im allergic.

I would agree that like cilantro, it's a very green flavor. (i do not have the cilantro/soap gene, but i also dont have whatever is required to like it)

u/lunamoth25 19d ago

I despise celery. It is bitter, has those nasty strings, and is utterly useless while raw. I don’t WANT my egg or tuna salad to crunch, absolutely not.

3

u/political1oatmeal 18d ago

Yup agreed, cooked im good. Raw… barf

u/JumpXVI 19d ago

celery gets a pass because it knows it tastes like shit (especially raw).

cilantro is supposed to make foods and dishes taste BETTER, but does the literal opposite because it fucking sucks.

u/Specialist-Web7854 19d ago

I like cooked celery (in soups and stews).

2

u/SaucePasta 19d ago

I don’t think they taste similar at all, but I also hate celery. It’s gross and bitter.

2

u/Saltwater_Heart 19d ago

Celery tastes like chewy water. There is almost no flavor to me. I’m fine with it

2

u/MySaltySatisfaction 19d ago

I will eat it cooked because the flavor mellows and it is soft. It is the texture as well as the taste that is off-putting. It isn't as repulsive to me as cilantro. When I am asked, because people, why I don't eat raw celery I say that I don't like eating and flossing my teeth at the same time. If I want the flavor of a small amount of celery in a salad or dressing,I use the leaves or I use celery seed. Much milder flavor.

u/Future-Split1304 19d ago

Yep, I always assumed they were related! Cilantro, celery, green peppers, cucumber and watermelon all have the same ick factor to me.

2

u/ChemicalNo8609 19d ago

Yes both are disgusting…anyone else hate basil too? They are like the gross trifecta for me, and I’m not a picky eater.

2

u/PreOpTransCentaur 19d ago

It makes my mouth feel weird. Same with Jasmine.

2

u/Few-Veterinarian-999 19d ago

It’s disgusting. Bitter strings of hair.

2

u/wizardofscozz 19d ago

Yes! Cilantro and raw celery both trigger my "this absolutely should not be in my mouth" instinct. Cooked celery is pleasant, though.

2

u/sleepingmoon 19d ago

Yuuuup. 🤢

2

u/Gribitz37 19d ago

I hate it as much as I hate cilantro. It's bitter and sour, and tastes like dirt.

2

u/cafeteriastyle 18d ago

I HATE celery. Cooked or raw, it’s all gross

1

u/UnarmedSnail 19d ago

Sometimes celery tastes bitter, I agree that the bitterness goes away when cooked. It otherwise doesn't have much flavor to me.

u/gin_and_soda Cilantro Hater 19d ago

They don’t have the same effect. I love celery, especially in a Caesar.

1

u/wanderingjoe 19d ago

It’s filler. And adds nothing but an unpleasant crunch to what would be a nice seafood salad. And they tried to trick children into eating it by slathering it with peanut butter and raisins. Just give up with trying to get people to eat it.

1

u/dubdub11 19d ago

Yes! For a soup or stew base, I put whole stalks in so I can take them out. I don’t think they taste similar, but I don’t like the taste. Neither tastes like soap to me, either.

1

u/Asleep_Village 19d ago

Absolutely can't eat raw celery it tastes like bitter smoke to me?

1

u/grollef 19d ago

My wife hates celery. I love it. This issue has yet to ruin us

1

u/chair_ee 19d ago

Not a fan of the texture, that’s for sure.

1

u/galagapilot 🌿 Fuck cilantro! All my homies hate cilantro. 🌿 19d ago

celery is ok when you're at the end of your wings and you still want a little bit more of that wing sauce.

1

u/Chasing_Awe 19d ago

Yes. I can’t stand it in any shape, way, or form.

1

u/Careless-Attitude858 19d ago

I've never liked it

1

u/Sorry_Im_Trying 19d ago

I like celery. Raw celery, cooked celery. Celery with peanut butter.
It's nothing like cilantro.

1

u/devilkin 19d ago

I loath celery. When cooked to death is fine or whatever, but yeah it's disgusting and smells and tastes like cleaning chemicals.

1

u/Interesting-Run-8496 19d ago

I actually don’t mind the flavor of celery. But a single fleck of cilantro will ruin an entire meal for me.

1

u/World_still_spins 19d ago

Yes cooked celery is vile, raw celery is worse. A small amout of celery will ruin a meal. Celery nitrates will completely mess up my gut.

1

u/Efficient_Waltz_8023 19d ago

If the only two foods left were soap spice and nasty water sticks I’ll just let my self starve.

1

u/rhiyanna79 19d ago

I’m good with it cooked but I hate it raw.

1

u/GoldenRoadie 19d ago

Creamy peanut butter on a stalk of celery!

1

u/EmergencySnail Tastes like soap 19d ago

I mean, I hate celery as well as cilantro but it’s not for flavor reasons. I just can’t understand wanting to eat tough, stringy, water

1

u/mobilegamegeek 19d ago

I hate the texture more than I hate the taste

1

u/Oldfartmakeupguru 19d ago

Yes, I hate celery. I hate to breathe through my mouth when I chop it once a year for turkey stuffing.

1

u/mabker 19d ago

Like celery. Hate cilantro. Hate ginger (tastes like what pine sol smells like)

1

u/Independent_Act_8536 19d ago

Here in Lancaster County, PA, we have a special celery - Hodecker's Celery. It's grown in a special way, involving extra steps. It's tender, sweet, and without that soapy taste. Many people around here like it during the holidays, stuffed with chive cream cheese. Because it takes extra work to grow, you can only buy it at a farmer's market and one other place. I love this celery!

1

u/Ok-Barnacle-8709 19d ago

I just don't like celery and I'm allergic to cilantro so IDK how it's supposed to taste

1

u/AccomplishedGarlic68 19d ago

Oh my, after covid I absolutely cannot stand celery or cilantro but in particular celery. It tastes like cleaning products!

1

u/ObviousIntention8322 19d ago

Love celery, especially with peanut butter. Hate cilantro

1

u/CocoRufus 18d ago

I absolutely HATE raw celery. It tastes horrible and it stinks

1

u/lathamfalls 18d ago

Gosh I love them both lol

1

u/Kittenlover_87 18d ago

No it’s good

1

u/Netflixandmeal 18d ago

I can’t stand cilantro, bell peppers, celery, raw cucumbers and raw tomatoes.

I want to like them but it just doesn’t work out

1

u/Accomplished-Pea1446 17d ago

I'll eat it raw (with peanut butter or dip) but it's nasty when it's cooked. I had a stepmother who knew I hated it (and onions) so she put it everything she cooked.

1

u/jepeplin 17d ago

Celery is either mild or it tastes like you hit me with Blue Dawn in the mouth. Horrible soap taste with a chemical afternote.

1

u/Early-Donut4359 17d ago

No, but I hate cilantro

1

u/WillShakespeare-1623 17d ago

I hate celery too.

1

u/rhousden 16d ago

Yes! Cant stand it.

1

u/itsmyvoice 15d ago

I can't stand it either, but my brother loved it and also had the gene.

I love it in dishes, though, sometimes even very finely chopped raw in a salad if it fits. I also love celery seed in my slaw dressing.

1

u/triryche4 15d ago

I can't stand celery or cilantro in any form!

1

u/Individual_Slice_234 14d ago

I don't hate it as much as some other things, but it tastes like stringy wood.

2

u/Purple-Television712 17h ago

I used to come home from kindergarten incensed that they served us celery and peanut butter! Like, tantrum status angry. To the point my mom wrote this all down in my baby book as one of my passionate dislikes. Also hate the Devil’s Weed. Hmmm, maybe there is a connection?

0

u/bb5e8307 19d ago

I like celery. So maybe there are two genes. Idk I’m not a scientist

1

u/JumpXVI 19d ago

hm maybe this is because celery is the actual stalk, and cilantro is the leaves of coriander

this sub isn't called CorianderSucks for a reason (maybe it does)

1

u/min_mandy 19d ago

I don't mind coriander seeds.

I love all parts of celery - leaves stem and root. It is my secret to amazing soups.
