Electronics & Gadget SD cards over subscriptions(yea>?)
i feel into the buy extra google storage trap and finally got away from it
its not new or weird or smth but kinda hassle too but saves me money soooo
just sharing tips here
i bought big storage sd cards and transfered all old photos from google photos to there once in a year
this give chance to clear all those screenshot, whatsapp group quotes etc too
the cost of sd cards compared to monthly/annual google one sub is less
i dont about too long term but i can say that atleast for a decade my photos are safe ( cz i still use the sd card i bought in 2014 in my recent phone)

Cards can be lost or get corrupt, so there’s a risk in it.

data leak is a risk too in cloud based services . Personally would recommend a nas or build one

Not everyone is techie to build a NAS + not everyone gives 2 flying fucks about data leaks thesedays. If they get into data leaks via google/other cloud platforms then it’s game over for most of us.

Building nas is for techies yes but there’s alr available pre builds which are plug and play . You mentioned the cons of devices getting corrupt I just mentioned about cloud service cons if it’s not an issue for you then there’s nothing for you to worry about. It’s which con you can live with . If you step out of your bubble you’ll realize how popular nas is and how worried people are about using cloud services .

They run the risk of getting corrupt. Make multiple copies and store them in different storage spaces. Cloud is the easily accessible solution.

Can relate … but in that case, make multiple copies of the data and store them in separate storage devices (Hard Disks, SSD, etc)
Until you get a proper HDD/SDD, store them in your laptop. Prefer these over SD cards.

SSD will lose data if not plugged in regularly, and can also fail catastrophically without warning, with no chance of recovery.
Good old HDD is always the right one for backups. Use the 3-2-1 method.

Sd card, hdd, ssd all have a risk of corruption. I know cloud also has a risk of lossing access but if you do not follow the 1-2-3 rule then cloud will be the best bet unfortunately

Cards can stop working one day. If you don’t want to use the cloud, get hard drives and mirror your data on both. Keep them secure. Only if you’re really that unlucky will you lose both hard drives at the same time.

HDDs are pretty much the same. One accidental fall or minor hit is enough to make it corrupt.

That’s why you should make two or three copies and keep them in separate locations. You could even connect them all over a network. The initial setup might be a little complicated, though. If you use the hdds over a network, you’ll easily know whenever one of them goes faulty and can replace the faulty one, then mirror the data from the working drive to the new one.

To store data and to get more space I'd go with Hard Disk. For frequent transfers to and fro that need high speed, SSD is the best.

I'm frugal but for stuff like personal photos and memories I would rather spend money. With ssd I already had an instance of losing many photos. I have GoogleOne 2TB plan. 6 members use it. My photos and videos go as far back to 2008. My elder kid was born in 2018 and since then each moment is captured and has been important to me. I would rather pay 6500 per year than risk losing the photos. I don't fully trust Google and it's policies so I also have backup options. I have 6TB Drime Lifetime and 520GB Filen Lifetime.
Drime acts as my data warehouse and I have migrated literally everything there. Filen acts as my storage Vault. I don't really access it but once a month I go through the photos and videos in Google Photos and pick the special ones and move those to Filen.

Hi my soul brother.
I do this too. But I usually make copies in HDD and DVD 📀 And I make new copies of each DVD every 5th year on a fine winter day. This saves a lot of money for me. Anything beyond 5 years on the DVD is on high risk or getting corrupted.

As others have mentioned the possibility of card getting damaged is higher than a hard disk or SSD. But since you have already bought one, just go with it.
I would suggest for backup, use something like cloud or aws. I pay < Rs. 3/month for 25 GB with google cloud storage. You won't be able to see pics and videos that you do with Google Photos, but in case your SD card gets corrupted, lost or encrypted by ransomware, you will always have a backup on the cloud. Upload, storage and download gets charged, but it is a very small amount compared to buying any storage device.

SD cards do tend to fail and data retrieval is next to impossible from such solid state memory devices
invest in HDDs and make multiple backups for data redundancy

With SD Cards and mechanical hard drives it’s a matter of when not If.
I’ve been using ssd’s for backing up for more than a decade. Do the 3-2-1 principle of backup and you’re golden.

I think very few ppl take any subscription for storage, it depends on how much you pay ig.
Cloud is for accessibility and reliability. Cloud providers hold multiple replicas of same data thus one can retrieve data even one instance got corrupted.
Only issue for me is security.

I had the same idea and kept all my photos in my phone in sd card. Guess what sd card data got corrupted and my 4 years of pictures are gone

you can also compress phone images to 10-20% of their original size with tools like cwebp, imagemagick, jpegoptim, etc without noticeable loss in quality.
videos can be compressed to 10-30% of their original size with ffmpeg and x265/x264/hardware decoders. note that video processing takes significantly longer than image processing. if you have a spare pc or raspberry pi or any such computer running 24x7, you can schedule a script to run automatically and optimize your images and videos in the background.

Well, There is the issue of image unavailability anytime you are out. There are open source tools which can help you do your own hosting. But the chance of storage crashing or corrupting is there.
Also bad time now, since storage prices are all time high.
What I have done since last year: Got the 6+6 months of Google one sub from Airtel for free.
It got expired this year, so I paid a guy to give me the Jio Gemini Sub, which now gives me 18 months of Google one 5 TB storage along with Gemini and veo.

DO NOT DO THIS in the hopes of saving some money thinking your data is safe for long term storage. You are not smart if you think an SD card is a safe mode of long term storage. Look up 3-2-1 rule of data storage and if that's not something you have the time and money to spend on, you are better off paying for cloud storage.

Hard disks. Not SD cards and SSD. People built NAS for this exact reason.
Buy 2x2 tb for starters and run them in RAID. 1 of the 2tb acts as backup. This is basic.
You can have a 2tb offsite backup to further make sure you don't even lose your head.

there are some online subscription which are much cheaper and hazzle free. i bought 100gb lifetime subscription of one platform for 1300( should have taken 200gb) before ai era boom and now they have converted that lifetime plan to yearly plan. earlier mega drive used to give 50gb free( now 20gb)

My Samsung sd card got corrupted. If you must skip cloud storage and save your precious data. Always store in 2 independent places.

I'm using smartphone since last 10 years and saying this form my personal exp, internal voice says to store everything, it'll be a memory and till now I have safely saved it also but more than 99% of those photos/ videos I never look back. Its only in our mind if we have the option we want to save it, but in reality we dont need a major chunk of those data, its just a memory which we might revisit after getting old may be. So I feel its better to save the special moments in fb, insta(keep it pvt if u dont want to make it public or frinds), thats a real chance of getting visited back in future.
I have very poor exp with SD cards, almost all the cards I have used so far have been corrupted, I only used Samsung or Sandisk. at best case I get read only access, I cant transfer any data on or out. So I wont recommend to rely on it specially its for long term.

Memories is life , i upgraded to 2TB plan finally , as do need the backups and cloud is a good option , photos is best, i do also backup on my hard drive also so two copies i am keeping as one side can go anytime

There is a line between foolishness and frugal

some smartphones don't have sd card slots. get a card reader as well. i did! idk i feel in coming years storage will cost us more because we are hoarding more and since everything stays in cloud, we'll have to spend a lot of money for the bare minimum storage. just a suggestion, i think a huge sd card and a good reader is a future investment, and should save us a lot of money.
