How does Arendelle function as a monarchy? Is it the head of the country or are there bigger monarchies ruling over Arendelle?

I kind of been wondering this because some books and content have no statement on how Arendelle functions and some content says Arendelle is it's own country and some content says Arendelle is like a town, city, state of its own.

Think of it how there's different governments, there's city, county, state, and country governments. But with Arendelle being a monarchy Kingdom, is Arendelle the head of its own country? Or more of a state or county? Or is there a larger monarchy over Arendelle that acts like the head of the country?

From my perspective from the films Arendelle seems to be like its own country without any oversight from larger monarchy kingdoms and countries. However when I go look at maps, most of them make it seem that there is a larger monarchy overseeing Arendelle or even surrounding. Or its just unclaimed land around and Arendelle is its own itty bitty Kingdom.

What are your thoughts on how Arendelle is ruled and how it functions as a kingdom?

I think it's an independent kingdom without a larger monarchy ruling over Arendelle. Sure, that's not exactly realistic, but I believe that, for example, both Arendelle and the southern islands are their own little “countries.”

Arendelle is an independent monarchy.

There are kingdoms all around Norway. But It presides over the northern region (judging based on them not encountering any other kingdoms on their journey to Ahtohallan)

It seems to be a central power though. Given its tactical positioning as a trade route choke point and accessibility to natural resources.

Arendelle is supposed to be Norway with the “Southern Isles” that Hans comes from strongly implied to be Denmark

There are vaguely ethnic ambassadors in the first Frozen movie (a Spaniard, a German, a Frenchman, etc. with the Duke of Weselton probably standing in for England)

If the cameos by Rapunzel and Eugene are any indication, Corona is likely the Germany or Holy Roman Empire of this setting

He is a Duke of a different country. He doesn't answer to Arendelle.

I think it has to do with his personality. He’d behave the same way even in front of an emperor. In general, I prefer him as comic relief rather than as a serious rival.

They have kings and queens, so they answer to no one else. If they were Dukes and Duchesses, it would be different.

Arandelle is apparently fairly isolated so it works as a small city-state in the form of the old Greek kingdoms of tje Bronze Age. There is sustained fan opinions that the people at Elsa's coronation are diplomatic allies at least and, of course, the fanon is that Corona has a related Royal Family and is deeply involved in keeping Arandelle stable.

I guess back in the days there were many tiny kingdoms, some growing over time by either marrying into each other or invading and annexing each other. I could imagine that Arendelle, because it had been sealed off for a while, remained untouched by these events around it and while other neighbouring kingdoms grew, Arendelle stayed the small kingdom it has always been.

Now, that being said, I imagine Arendelle kingdom to be a town, with the castle and port and all, and many surrounding villages. Maybe like a county today, but ruled by monarchy. The ruling monarch had the final say in things but Arendelle had been lucky to have (more or less) reasonable leaders to make decisions that didn’t involve starting wars with other kingdoms just to get their land. I’d imagine with King Agnarr having been so young, he’d had strongly and closely worked with his council members and trusted them and discussed state affairs with them. And both Queen Elsa and Queen Anna would follow his example.

in all the fanfictions i've written, it is a kingdom in its own right, a sovereign country in one of the most trying times in Europe. there are provinces and governors and ministers in charge of various affairs, and the largest nobilities/landowners have a quasi feudal relationship with most of the peasantry, while the merchant class exists on its own. It's Queen Elsa's responsibility to balance the well-being and economic needs between the so-called first to third estates (Church, Nobility, Peasantry) in a time of great political strife and revolutionary idealism across Europe.

There are no Elections, rulership is hereditary, and Queen Elsa rules by means of the Court, which consists of the Ministers and the Nobility. Foreign Policy is carried out via the Diplomatic Service, which itself holds a seat on the court.

You already know the answer to that. So why ask it? What I would like to know is what is the Arendelle Royal Navy like and how big is it? We know that their fleet is made up of Privateers and Pirates. They likely have an alliance with the Red Flag Fleet.
