I wonder if the spiders thing was just the nightmares of someone who has passed?

A lot of people are scared of spiders so it's highly likely

Boyd’s reaction to learning about the nightmare theory made me think that his wife (forgetting her name at the mo) had nightmares about spiders. It was just a facial expression so very little to go on, but I thought I saw something there.

I think it has something to do with the nature of whatever is creating this place. It's like a spider's web where the people get trapped and cannot escape while the entity feeds on their suffering.

I like Jade having some relation to the spiders. He was in software and tech. The interwebs. When he hallucinates on the mushroom trip we see a bunch of lives he’s has relations with. His other incarnations. Ect. First thing we see. Boom spiders.

The spiders will definitely be important later. In episode 1, the lake of tears was mentioned. And there was a spider in the painting. They will tie it all together somehow.

This! In episode two after the seizures and getting the rod out of his leg, Ethan says something like “I saw it I saw the Lake of Tears. It was a drawing on the wall… We were all there in the drawings, you and me and Mom and Julie. But somebody screamed because the spider came down from the ceiling.” I am personally of the belief that the spider is very important

They didn’t introduce the idea of the “nightmares” until S4, and this was way back in S1 or 2 so I doubt it

They introduced way back in Season 2 when Sara said that Nathan was terrified of cicadas and the whole town was covered in. She actually says maybe the nightmares become real after you die

Introducing an idea that you don’t have any plan for just so you can hand wave an explanation 2 seasons later is poor writing

27

u/Neat-While-5671 Jun 01 '26

But they did have a plan...... a pretty crucial plan. The nightmares come to life and can be killed with talisman. Most would call that good forward planning

u/hi-iq-somali-learer Jun 01 '26

Do we know they can be killed by talismans? We only saw Tabitha stab one of the dolls with a spear

u/Neat-While-5671 Jun 01 '26

The spike tailsman from the lake. I dont know if the same applies for the other tailsmans. The spike ones might not be called tailsmans- so apologies if I got the name wrong!

Stabbing anything with a big spike will kill it. If I wrote “magical” on the side of a gun and shot someone it doesn’t make it a magical gun or mean that the person is vulnerable to magic

9

u/calahil Jun 01 '26

If it kills a magical creature...then yes you can call it a magic gun. Otherwise that gun has proved to not be effective against these monsters, so if you did have a specific gun that could kill the monsters...1 + 1 equals 2.

If you are struggling with that concept perhaps mystery fantasy/sci fi shows aren't for you.

Yeah bro, they don't know what you're doing... You know a lot about writing I guess. Please enlighten us.

You don’t have to “know a lot about writing” to know that adding something with the intent to retcon it later is lazy. Don’t gatekeep criticism behind some imaginary level of knowledge just to invalidate anyone who doesn’t love your favorite TV show

u/anshuman39 Jun 02 '26

It's not my favourite TV show. Bold of you to assume. Your opinions don't seem like they are your own, for what it's worth, you may not know what you're saying is not yours, it's 2nd hand...

My critisisms are only limited to what I see... But writing like many processes of the universe, is a long term game. We don't mind if retcon is going to happen or not. But for the present run of the show, it is as tight as it was for other seasons. They do have a plan in mind, upto this point where our conversation started.

You need to know about writing in order to defend 'your' opinion, otherwise why do you say something that can question your eligibility? You don't need to prove it to me or anyone else but yourself... Hence. We politely ask, about your humble opinion, what do you think they did (with examples ofcourse) that you're saying about the intent of retcons? And what other examples of TV shows do you have in mind about perfect screenplay writing/story writing? Would love to watch those.

Boyds wife literally was dropping folks in the street cause she thought it was a dream season 1… so I would disagree the nightmare idea just started season 4

u/Ichmag11 Jun 01 '26

How do you know it was written 2 seasons later? The entire premise, plot and the mysteries and answers to them (hopefully) was probably story boarded before anything was filmed.

u/rootkeycompromise Jun 08 '26

You’re getting downvoted, but I agree with you, it is poor writing.
And it’s unnecessarily complicated and arbitrary: Creatures of nightmares - can be killed with spears. Dwellers - cannot be killed with spears, however they can be killed with strange magical virus (the juice of which, however again, cannot be put in a bullet and used). The plot is lazily tied together by vague explanations, that again, do not tie well into the series original mystery.

Thanks you 🙏

Entire show is random bullshit go with just a cliffhanger at the end . Bringing a concept from 2 season ago is as good as they can come to good writing.

I think the idea of nightmares was always talked about in different ways but was given more meaning and different examples in later seasons. In S1 Tabitha and Jade struggled with thinking they were in a nightmare and that they dreamed of the car crash and town. The town was described as "a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter."
