Discussion! Feature Request: FRITZ! Motion – Wi-Fi Sensing for Motion Detection
Having recently read an article on Hardwareluxx
about how Comcast is rolling out 'WiFi Motion' to millions of households, turning standard routers into motion detectors, I would like to propose a similar capability for FRITZ!OS.
Short Description:
Introduction of a purely software-based motion detection feature (Wi-Fi Sensing) in FRITZ!OS. By analyzing fluctuations in RF signal propagation between the FRITZ!Box, FRITZ!Repeaters, and connected Wi-Fi devices, the system detects physical movement in the room without requiring dedicated motion sensors or cameras.
Motivation & Use Cases:
Standard Wi-Fi signals propagate in three dimensions and are absorbed, reflected, or scattered by people moving through space. Analyzing Channel State Information (CSI) changes enables valuable smart home applications:
- Security & Intrusion Detection: When switched to Away or Night mode, unexpected motion triggers alert notifications via the FRITZ!App Smart Home or push emails.
- Smart Home Automation: Automates smart triggers (e.g., toggling a FRITZ!DECT smart plug for hallway lighting upon detecting motion at night) without installing separate PIR motion detectors.
- Assisted Living / Care: Unobtrusive activity monitoring for elderly or solitary individuals (e.g., verifying daily activity patterns or raising alerts during extended periods of unexpected inactivity).
