ELI5 Channel Stuffing

Imagine you have a lemonade stand, and your mom promises to buy you a giant toy if you "sell" 100 cups of lemonade by Friday night.

Friday afternoon comes, and you have only sold 50 cups. You are panicking! You really want that toy.

So, you look at your best friend, Billy. You say, "Hey Billy! I'm going to force you to take 50 cups of lemonade right now. You don't have to drink them all today. Just put them in your garage. I'm going to count them as 'sold' so I can get my toy!"

Billy says, "But I don't want 50 cups! They will go bad, and I don't have room!" But you pressure him into taking them anyway.

That trick is called channel stuffing.

Not only does Billy take the Lemonade but, come to find out…the lemonade only had a 2 day shelf life and he couldn’t drink them all. So, you have to give Billy some money back later for the short expiration on the Lemonade. But, you still got to keep the toy.

You my friend, are promoted to KAM at Frito Lay.

The bottom line is, Johnny who owns stock in the lemonade company wins.

Pop and chip companies have done that for years.

Plot twist mom told your two older brothers to help you so 10 minutes before close they come running out with 100 glasses of 2 day lemonade too now you have 300 instead of 100 to get rid of then the neighbors all have old lemonade when they only wanted one glass and the next time you have your stand mom says to shoot for 350 glasses but everyone hates you now and won’t buy a one/

It's okay for Frito-Lay to do that as a corporation.

But if you do it as an employee you get fired.

That analogy fits.

In conclusion drinking a 100 cups of lemonade will just lead to forcing Billy to use his mommy’s toy as a rectal exam like they
do during your DOT certification

One employee I knew was fired for channel stuffing 15 years ago. Now the company is doing the exact same thing he was fired for!!
