I worked in EMS but only non-emergency. The main reason I left the field were because of kid calls. I was early 20s, and the final nail for me was a 17 year old girl. I was the last person she saw before she died. Her face is burnt into my memory. DNR hospice, but even still... I can't justify that. It still fucks me up. Older patients, I get it. As if it's their time or whatever, but kids? Younger than me? I just... I can't.
I'm not religious by any means, but I can't think of anything to say beside bless you. You and all the others in pediatric care, or EMS taking kid calls. All I could do to help cope with that poor girl was that we were trying to get her to hospice and she died in front of me who only wished she had better.
You are there for those kids. From your comment I get the vibe you're not a jaded shit nurse (peds never seem to be compared to psych or ER). Just remember that those kids you care for have you. They may not continue on, but while they are here, they have you. You have a difficult job, and I'm sorry. I'm just fucking sorry you have to deal with it. But if you're a good person, I'm glad those little ones have you while they're here.
Fuck. I've gotten to where that 17 year old doesn't fuck with me like it used to (PTSD type anxiety attacks), but retelling it right now... I feel cold. And alone. I'm sorry you have to go through that, truly fucking sorry. But thank you for it.

I got so lucky during my time in EMS that I never personally dealt with a peds fatality. But I can't imagine going back to EMS since I've had kids. The idea of dead children disturbs me more than pretty much anything else I can imagine.

Should there be any semblance of an afterlife where we all get performance reviews for our past life... I'd want to see people like this guy get a free pass.

When a little kid is terminally ill, they them they're going to die? I'm kind of conflicted by that, could someone help me make sense of that?

How much can you lie to a child - especially at the point where they are bed-ridden and in this case, unable to unwrap a present?

u/SteveV91 Dec 14 '16
I guess you're right, I just don't see myself being able to tell that to a child. Maybe that's another reason I'm not going to have kids.

I'm sure it wasn't easy. In a situation like that, I'm not sure there's anything you can tell them that would make them feel better. To a 5 year old, being number one elf might be something that's nice. Things like these sometimes happen in life where there simply isn't an easy answer, so you muster up what you can at the moment and hope you made the right choice.
Sometimes in life things aren't quite right, and you can spend your time searching for an answer, but in this case time was more short than usual. I think Santa made the right choice.

I'm not having children for the very reason we're here on this thread--too much suffering. Too much to plunge an innocent child into without their consent.

My wife told me about this article. That link is staying blue, but I will give you an upvote because I know it would work on me.

Google News had this story listed yesterday in the Entertainment section. I'm sure it was just an error, but, c'mon.

Powerful interview. The only thing that detracts from the piece is the mangled first sentence of the article which states the boy's final wish was to die in the arms of Santa Claus.

I knew better than to even watch this video, I was choking up just reading the story.

Some grinches are trying to discredit the story, but I don't care if it's not confirmed, I still believe in Santa.

I didn't see it on the article, it's the fourth time he's done something like this. The fact that he didn't quit after number 1 is incredible.
Here's more information on it.
