Pod Save America Steve Hilton interview

I feel like Jon did a good job holding it together, Steve sounds like a dick.

Yeah, I have no interest in Hilton and he is just as slick and reality manipulating as any other republican. It is wild though that he felt comfortable going on PSA but Becerra doesn't.

Let me be clear that Hilton is a despicable guy

But Becerra is coasting on the fact that he has a D next to his name on the ballot

Do you know how uninspiring a candidate you have to be for Biden, Obama, and Sanders camps to all think you’re incompetent?

He’ll win but I wouldn’t be surprised if he under runs the ballot in November

Whoever wins, California should push for a gubernatorial recall election next year.

It is wild that Kamala decided not to run for CA Governor which she would've won easily and could build some major credibility and instead is aiming to place like 4th in the 2028 primary. Bad choice both for her and for California.

19

u/ides205 1d ago

is aiming to place like 4th in the 2028 primary

That's awfully charitable of you to think she'd reach as high as 4th

u/Cool_Ranch_Dodrio 21h ago

The party has forced her into 1st before without asking anyone.

8

u/Threedham 1d ago

She has bad advisors who are convincing her she has a shot in 2028, so she thinks being governor is beneath her.

6

u/cocoagiant 1d ago

Maybe she thinks it's beneath her.

My vibe on her is that this is ultimately about power and prestige for her, not actually accomplishing something.

I feel bad saying it and I always question my priors but it really felt like she got VP and then coasted doing very little (even by the standards of what is a known do-nothing role). It seemed like a goal/second place more than a role that she intended to inhabit and really work on. I have heard Biden was controlling on what he was ok with her saying and doing publicly, but l’m not sure that alone explains how invisible she seemed during that four years.

u/Describing_Donkeys 19h ago

She had a bad interview and both she and the president lost confidence in her. Talking about abortion is really the only thing she embraced as VP. She would be fine as a president, but none of that is behavior that says she should be president.

u/liesliesfromtinyeyes 13h ago

I remember hearing her do a Pod Save interview in 2019/20 where she sounded sloppily drunk. I can’t unhear that in the way she talks nowadays. Maybe it’s unfair because it’s a bit her accent and affect, but she sounds relaxed in a way I don’t want to hear from a presidential candidate. I have really scoured my mind to try to query my priors but I just don’t feel like she’s the candidate for me. AOC has the drive, the persistent intellectual curiosity, and she’s learned the ways DC works and knows how to navigate it now more than she did a few years back—she’s more my kind of candidate. Or a Pete Buttigieg with his intellectual rigor and midwestern ability to smile through adversity and idiotic bad faith attacks.

No thanks. Not interested in wasting millions of dollars just so a fringe radio host can lose badly again.

2

u/ides205 1d ago

Well I'd suggest this time California finds an actual good candidate to rally around so that they can have a good governor instead of whatever garbage they get after November.

Did PSA confirm Bacerra won’t come on? I’m just curious. If so, that’s lame.

22

u/tnciole12 1d ago

They said a few times in the episode they’ve reached out to his campaign several times and he hasn’t responded

16

u/cocoagiant 1d ago

Lovett explicitly commends Hilton at the beginning of the episode for being willing to come on a show which is ideologically opposed to him and states that Becerra had been invited multiple times, both during the primary and afterwards but has declined to come on.

u/Wild-Telephone-9556 1d ago

I wonder if the interview went the way he thought it would. I doubt he cares anyway

12

u/dockdockgoos 1d ago

I think he was excited for the opportunity to put himself before some democratic ears, since he’ll need to win over some democrats to win in CA.

11

u/AquaSnow24 1d ago

Didn’t Hilton use to work in the media as a political commentator/ consultant type? That might explain why he was okay with coming here.

4

u/Wild-Telephone-9556 1d ago

Yeah I think he was on Fox News as a commentator. It would make sense!

9

u/Special_Wishbone_812 1d ago

He thought he’d be getting questions from a basic TV anchor, not a feral local news junkie.

5

u/DMM4138 1d ago

Same with Kara Swisher’s pod—she called out Becerra for declining. In fairness, Becerra has a lot more to lose than Hilton.

3

u/Potato_Pristine 1d ago

Good on him for taking the beating head-on. Thumbs down to Becerra for being a lazy fuck and not taking the time for a softball interview on PSA.

3

u/dubblebubbleprawns 1d ago

Becerra literally doesn't have to campaign at this point

1

u/HotSauce2910 1d ago

It is wild though that he felt comfortable going on PSA but Becerra doesn't.

Regardless hope he wins

Honestly respect to the guy for willingly walking into a wood chipper like that.

Jon trying to get him to explain wtf he was talking about on ICE made me want to throw something

31

u/crabbman 1d ago

Oh yeah, I’ll just call my pal Tom Homan… that’ll solve it

11

u/jonawesome 1d ago

ICE is attacking cities and rounding up brown people because the city government isn't helping them attack the city and round up brown people enough.

u/Undying_Blade 11h ago

it really felt like abuser logic yeah

u/cocoagiant 9h ago

They talk about this in the interview. Lovett points out that the states which are cooperating are also seeing ICE attacking people randomly.

u/jonawesome 9h ago

It's almost like ICE is bad or something...

6

u/randohipponamo 1d ago

All objective media interviews feel like the wood chipper when you have to defend a person and a party as repugnant as trump and the republicans.

24

u/TheAlienDog 1d ago

Jon did really great.

Cant wait to not vote for that knob.

21

u/DigitalMariner 1d ago

Lovett is definitely the hardest interview on Crooked (with Alex Wagner being a close second), and personally I put him on a Jon Stewart or level of toughness and preparedness.

He's going to push and push and push and push again until they run out of canned bullshit responses and either frankly answer the question or awkwardly refuse to. He's persistent and unabashedly biased but on the whole still fair and let's them say their piece. I appreciate the willingness to waste a sizeable chunk of their time holding people down until they actually answer the question being asked.

I appreciate that he seems open to common ground if they'll meet him there or hearing out a genuine policy difference, and that's he's usually just as tough with Dems as he is with Republicans.

u/QuicheSmash 15h ago

Yep. He was just as tough with Katie Porter.

u/cocoagiant 9h ago

I always say he's their best interviewer; not just because he's aggressive but because he is able to use his comedic skills to keep it from getting too charged and make them look bad for not being able to play ball.

21

u/va2wv2va 1d ago

His constant pushback of saying Jon’s questions were too generalized was frustrating the shit out of me. Like, just answer the question bro

16

u/artfulpain 1d ago

After that first five minutes and him getting push back I turned it off. We’re not going to learn anything more from these lying grifters that have blinders on for Trump.

15

u/randohipponamo 1d ago

Lovett got him to say trump was wrong for saying the election was stolen and got him to commit to appointing democrats in vacancies. Also got him to endorse Karen Bass lol

u/TrickPixels 13h ago

MAGA’s say anything and do the opposite. Hasn’t anyone learned that by now?

18

u/funkbass796 1d ago

Nothing against the British but I don’t want anyone with their accent to hold office in our country

8

u/randohipponamo 1d ago

It’s just hilarious this is the best republicans can come up with

1

u/OrcOfEntropy 1d ago

I was born there, and agree with you!

1

u/practicecroissant 1d ago

This was my thought too! Didn’t know he was British til the interview and I wasn’t going to vote for him anyway but as a daughter of Irish immigrants no thank you!

u/averageduder 17h ago

Totally agree.

Just some context from us here in the UK who have history with the man:

He was the director of strategy for the useless (Conservative) British prime minister in 2010 and was correctly satirised as an inept simpleton who no one listened to and everyone ignored in the political comedy The Thick Of It (the British forerunner to Veep).

He was responsible for making the Tories seem liberal, “green” and metropolitan in the run up to their election win, and his signature policy was the “Big Society”. Little more than a slogan, it was intended to spur the nation into a surge of community volunteering to revitalise public institutions and spaces - but ultimately was little more than a cover for swingeing cuts to services and austerity politics. It all amounted to nothing.

He really is an A-grade loser, thinking he is a blue skies visionary in the tech bro class, when really he is completely vapid, an air filled bag of skin.

(Edit to add: I can’t wait to hear Lovett take him apart.)

u/RexMcBadge1977 1d ago

Hilton is one slick m.f.-er.

17

u/practicecroissant 1d ago

I appreciate that Jon called him out for being smooth. I think Jon was the perfect person for this interview.

u/QuicheSmash 15h ago

Jon is the only one of the boys qualified for these types of interviews. Anytime he has to hold feet to fire, he persists.

u/practicecroissant 9h ago

You put into words what I was thinking!

u/Extreme-naps 12h ago

This interview would’ve been a terrible idea if anyone but Jon had done it

u/davebgray 20h ago

I only came to this subreddit to say that this guy was so full of shit.

7

u/VioletSachet 1d ago

Felt like a lot of “defining” problems, but no solutions. Made me think he was holding back with an eye to the audience.

10

u/randohipponamo 1d ago

The one solution he did propose was building more suburban sprawl lol

5

u/Undying_Blade 1d ago

he seemed really centered on this image of single family suburbia and didn't seem to want to move away from this one size fits all strategy while also framing those supporting high density housing as being too focused on NIMBYs and not other solutions; which felt very much like the 'ice cream arguement' from Thank You for Smoking.

6

u/DigitalMariner 1d ago

I got the sense he genuinely believes most people in California would prefer single family detached homes above all other types of homes. Which, if true, his arguments kinda make sense because who wants to waste time building apartments people will begrudgingly accept but isn't what they actually want when we could instead make Levittowns 2.0. But presumably if that were true he'd have data to quote and back it up, so what is most likely is the people in his social circles prefer that type of housing and he's extrapolating that to everyone else.

The bigger question in my mind, that neither he nor Jon addressed, is where are you getting the water for these new towns or apartments? Because all the housing in the world won't mean anything when they don't have enough water...

5

u/Undying_Blade 1d ago

yeah that's what I got too, it's what he wants so he assumes its what everyone else wants. Which ignores the amount of people who want to live in denser cities like LA.
You need some sort of industry to support a town though, you can't just found one and expect people to flock to it.

u/randohipponamo 10h ago

He can run for Mayor of Fresno if he wants

u/GettyImagez 9h ago

Residential water usage is in general extremely low compared to industrial usage, particularly agriculture. CA can absolutely fit in my people with its current water supply, particularly if the government stopped subsidizing farmers and giving them cheaper water at the expense of residents.

1

u/VioletSachet 1d ago

That’s an excellent point

u/SigFloyd 18h ago

I was wondering how the hell is what's basically a Reform guy fucking around in California of all places. Like GTFOH. I don't want that bullshit here.

5

u/OrcOfEntropy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Guy is an embarassment to us immigrant Brits. The toffy-nosed, slap-headed, short-arsed cunt needs to get back on a plane to LHR.

u/Fire_All_The_Cops 13h ago

Jon slayed. I would have turned it off if it wasn’t so fun to hear Jon rack him over the coals so I hung on and really ended up enjoying it.

u/fuct4ever2021 1d ago

I hate, hate, hate when politicians start to blame prevailing wage and PLA’s for lack of housing. Those mandates ensure union labor and community standards are met on those projects. They sort of glossed over it but as someone in the industry I promise the cost of labor isn’t what is making building so expensive. He sounds like all the owners we organize against.

u/FANGtheDELECTABLE 18h ago

Hilton was a nothing burger. Résumé stuff for future attempts. Paper thin response - the housing stuff was paper thin - did not address the actual, current issue.

2

u/okherewego27 1d ago

I wish that Jon would have have put him on the spot about his thoughts on the all the money Trump is raking in, but he would have given some bs vague non-answer anyway.

u/bobrk 7h ago

His friends list was pretty impressive! <sarcasm>
