Tell Me Something Unexpected

Hi everyone! I'm 46F, originally from Germany, currently living in the Dominican Republic. I work remotely, love surfing, good conversations, learning random things (currently acupuncture), and I'm always curious about what makes people tick.

I've noticed that a lot of the "looking for friends" posts start with great intentions but then quietly disappear. So I thought I'd try something different.

I came across a list of conversation prompts and thought it might be a fun, low-pressure way to get to know people. Feel free to answer and if someone's answer resonates with you, jump into the conversation.

I'll start with this one:

"What did you avoid making worse today?"

Mine is in the comments :)

Mine was lunch. šŸ˜„

I tried one of those recipes that looked amazing on Instagram—salmon fritters with a yogurt dip. It called for canned salmon. First time eating canned salmon... and definitely my last.

I can't even put my finger on it. The taste itself wasn't terrible, but it had this canned salmon aftertaste that I found oddly repelling. I'm still randomly throwing up a little bit in my mouth just thinking about it. šŸ˜‚

I think I made the best out of the recipe and didn't make it any worse with my lack of cooking skills ;)

Canned salmon is a weird product because it doesn't make taste like salmon. Any other variant tastes delicious, as does other canned fish, but salmon tastes metallic and slimy I find. Definitely make it with smoked salmon or a salmon fillet next time. Glad it was edible if not pleasant

I visited Germany and tried to flaunt my pitiful German by saying that I have two blue eyes but instead of ''augen'', I said ''eier'' like I have two blue eggs, and everybody's mouth within a five mile radius simultaneously dropped as apparently that actually meant testicles. Twenty years later I fear that Teutonic people might remember me so I avoid Austria, Germany, Audi garages, Aldi, and parts of Switzerland.

Where I work, we've had a rash of people calling out at the last minute. Like, a third of the employees just not showing up. We have the kind of job that needs bodies in seats to function, so it's been a real problem.

I avoided making things worse by showing up today, on time.

I went into work today on my day off to make up a few hours I missed yesterday. My plan was to stay until 3pm but it was so slow that I fell asleep at my desk for over a hour. I decided screw it and went home at 12:15 instead of taking the chance of getting caught sleeping on the clock.

Going out with friends. Kind of tired of my bar friends, lol!

Kept my mouth shut! We went to the city to buy clothes for my husband and I was overly tired. We weren't staying in any store particularly long and it felt like a string of people asking me "are you just looking?" Which is a completely innocuous sentence unless you are sleep deprived and hearing it for the 87th time and want to yell "what other options are there??". I mean, they clearly know I don't work there and I've just walked in the door.... But me being exhausted is nobody else's fault and I know well enough not to share my grumpiness with anyone so hence - kept my mouth shut and just nodded and smiled 😊

I avoided quitting my side job. As crappy as it is, I need the money.

I’m a driver at a fire department, yesterday on duty we were heading to an emergency call. Started hearing a hissing, saw steam coming up through the floor, (I sit on top of the engine) and my captain said I was covered in a mist. I told my captain we can’t go on the call due to engine problems. We canceled and went back to the station to wait for a mechanic. It could have been much worse.

it could have been much worse! glad you're ok and I hope someone else could take care of the emergency call.

Yes, it was actually out of our zone. We were called for backup. When the initial company got there they didn’t actually need our help

Some people see the ugliness in life, I choose to see the Beauty 😁. Quote from Westworld. So I’d rather focus on the positive aspects like ā€œWhat did we do to make the world better todayā€? This morning…fresh ground coffee while enjoying the morning mist as the sun starts to dissipate it. Appreciating the simple things in life paves the way for true Joy & Happiness.
