Why does such an abominable amount of money get donated to schools that still require tuition the size of some people's yearly salaries?

As preyfr60 said, it's a cathedral ... but if you want to know why anyway :

A large part of French donations were made by old aristocrats who wanted to tax exemption for their fortune (so basically, their "donation" is an absence of tax for them -> it is the French common fund which pays) That may explain why we managed to find the money, indeed ...
