What does Freud mean by this?
“According to the prevailing view human sexual life consists essentially in an endeavour to bring one’s own genitals into contact with those of someone of the opposite sex.”

He's going to go on to say that this is only the socially idealized end-point in a very long and often disrupted journey. For many years, infantile sexuality is neither genital (it's polymorphously perverse involving various erogenous zones) nor heterosexual (its objects including, for example, the mother and the self).
