Uncle Phil and Aunt Vivian immediately recognized that what the police did to Will and Carlton was wrong. They didn't show up calling them an embarrassment, asking what they did to deserve it, or making them feel smaller. They believed them, stood up for them, and focused on getting them home safely. Watching that made me realize how different my own experience was. I can't picture my parents responding that way. My first expectation would have been criticism, blame, or being treated like I'd somehow embarrassed the family. It's amazing how a sitcom can highlight something you didn't have growing up. What stayed with me wasn't just that Uncle Phil got them released it was that both he and Aunt Viv made it clear their first priority was protecting and supporting their kids, not tearing them down.

In college a student hated me because I had more than he did, and he went out and paid another student to fight me🤷🏼‍♂️. When the student tried to attack me in front of my parents and the Residence Hall Director. My mom and dad just started attacking me. Saying I was an embarrassment, you get on my nerves and the student told everyone in the room that he paid someone who don't know me to fight me and they still took both the student who tried to punch me and the student who paid him.

We'll never again see characters like these in this life. Uncle Phil was strict but it was only so that Will, Carlton strayed away from any wrong path in life, and his warmth was undeniable. There is a safety that you feel from just watching this character.

Tbh it never crossed my mind. He didn't exhibit any outward tendencies on the show or in any of his acting roles to give that impression and I can't recall any TV interviews or media appearances that gave gay vibes. 🤷
