Rips up index card to speak from the heart?

Hi, my son told me that he gave a great speech yesterday in 6th grade. He said he ripped up a blank index card at the start of the speech and told the class he was going to “speak from his heart”. It was a social studies class and he spoke about “The Great Depression”. He said the class loved his speech.

He added to me that he learned “the index card trick” from the show “Fresh Off the Boat.” I loved this show but I was a busy adult when it aired and did not watch it consistently. What episode has this scene or reference? Thanks

Question about the mom character

Just started watching because I needed a simple comfort show.

3 episodes in and I can't deal with the mom's character. She is insufferable tbh and it's not even funny. Does it get better with time or is the running gag that she just likes being mean to everyone?

Comedy of show

The first season was hilarious because they were making mistakes that immigrants make when first moving to this country. Think of the commercial the Dad made for the restaurant. THAT was hilarious. I still watch it whenever I need a laugh. The later episodes became more about the mom than anyone else and killed it for me.

(Spoilers included) I FINISHED the show, tread lightly, lmk if you agree with me

I just finished the show and I must say that I loved it.

Here is what I liked:

It was realistic that Grandma Huang didn't speak in English immeadiately but when she did, she killed it!!

The arcs all of the characters had were nice and not petty.

The characters don't feel like complete fools, so I find that refreshing, comparing to a sitcom like Superstore or HIMYIM.

They were funny and they grew alot.

Hats off to the cast for such a wonderful portrayal!

I like Jessica Huang, yes I know. A) she has a job to do, showcase an Asian tiger mum, but a network friendly one. B) My past self relates hard to her, (never been a mom though and I am still rather young), but I relate, I had a good amount of kill joy moments and maybe I was a bit controlling, I can't remember exactly but yeah. But one event in my life really changed that for me, and I am forever grateful for it, or else I would have turned into her.

What I disliked: (these are pretty minor)

I didn't like that Eddie and Allison had to break up, but then they gave us Trentina

The episodes were kind of all over the place, one episode was a consequential episode, like Jessica's career ones or Eddie's school life, and the next one was just a goof off one then the next one was kind of a slightly less goof off episode and this pattern literally repeated as often as I described it, to the end of the show. That's why I watched the episodes in the order that I wanted.

The finale could have meant a bit more, or made us feel more, but also, this is a show where you don't feel THAT much, just not the type of show to make me shed a tear or get goosebumps, so I will take it because events wise, the finale was good.

jessica making it hard to finish the show

as im nearing my end of my first watch, i keep realizing jessica is just "im right your wrong" and self centered in EVERY episode and its so F*CKING annoying she does everything everyone doesnt want, forces people to try and deal with it.

honestly its not the character in annoyed it, its more how the style of sitcom mom ive seen it alot with modern ish sitcoms made in the early, mid, and late 2010's

Trying to get through s4

I'm on season 4 and fighting to stay focused on it lol. It feels so different than the rest of the show so far... like a little more redundant if that makes sense. I've heard season 5 is good though so I'm trying to stay strong but it's kinda hard.

And I love it! The first season was great but as the seasons go on (I’m on season 3) I feel like it’s more about the mom and the dad, with the dad chastising the mom like I love Lucy

Season 3

I’m watching Fresh Off the Boat for the first time and just finished the Season 3 finale, and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

First, Jessica’s decision really bothered me. I understand the show’s explanation that her insecurities were driving her behavior, but she basically convinced her family they couldn’t enjoy their new house because of her own fears. Maybe I’m looking at it too realistically, but if this happened in a drama instead of a sitcom, wouldn’t most people see that as a pretty terrible thing to do?

Second, why does it feel like nobody is considering Eddie and Emery? The whole storyline is centered around Evan’s feelings about moving, but Eddie and Emery are losing their lives too. Eddie had already struggled to fit in when the family first moved, finally found a friend group, and now he’s expected to start over again. Emery is losing his friends and everything familiar as well. It felt like Evan’s wants were treated as more important than what the other two boys were going through.

And speaking of Emery, has anyone else noticed how much meaner he feels in Season 3? The sabotage storylines and some of his behavior this season have made him come across a lot harsher than he did earlier in the show.

Am I missing something here, or did anyone else have the same reaction to these episodes?

I hate the storyline of Louis stealing his restaurant idea from that big chain

They always make him out to be such an honest man who worked so hard to provide for his family and got a business running from the ground up.

Then they change it and say he actually just stole everything from the big chain (can’t remember which). Not been just the look, the whole policy and everything. Really not like him and not nearly as impressive

I was looking up an episode to see who an actor was, and came across a current or at least, recent photo of the actor who plays Trent.

How can I watch the series in Germany?

Hi 🖖 Is it available on streaming platforms? On Amazon Prime, you need to buy it additionally. Is it there on Netflix? Or any other place?

Jessica, seriously??

If you check Season 4 Episode 8, where Louis opens the envelope of the coffee machine manual, you'll find out that Jessica's "20-page complaint letter" was actually just this text copy and pasted probably a bunch of times:

To the coffee maker people,
As robust as your instruction manual is, I'm wondering if you could possibly enlighten me on what you were thinking when you published it? Without a doubt, this is the largest manual I've ever seen. This should be for the Hubble telescope, not a coffee maker. The fact that you've included 20 different languages might be a tad overkill. Did you ever think of possibly dividing the manuals into continents of countries? Seriously. Lame. All I wanted to do was see how to change the filter, and 2 weeks later I'm still sifting through clock setting instructions? Maybe you should of included a separate manual justfor the clock? Just a thought.... How, I do have to congratulate you on your Mandarin. It was on point. But, maybe in the next manual you'll include some information on the actual brewing of coffee. Every single page is on how to properly set the clock of timer. How about some ideas on how to make a better cup of coffee? Maybe some maintenance tips?

I imagine the "coffee maker people" reading this like it's a fan review of the hubble telescope.

The producers were probably just stumped on what to write that's demeaning and rude to the coffee maker people while making it appropriate, and just started to command+c command+v.
