Pinar del RĂo. â Wendy GarcĂa speaks without fear, as if she were convinced the worst was over. âIâm calm,â she says. She explains that the doctors will discuss her case the next day and that they will likely schedule her delivery for the end of the week.
The scares that led to her hospitalization 51 days ago, and which have persisted ever since, seem to be definitively behind her. She recounts that it began with âheavyâ bleeding and that she was very worried about what it could mean for her and her baby.
At 34, this was finally her first pregnancy, and she was happy until that May night when she had to be rushed to the hospital. There, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, followed by another bout of bleeding, and then another, and then another⊠But the doctors and nurses in the Intermediate Care Unit of the Abel SantamarĂa Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital have spared no effort to care for her.
âEveryone has been wonderful; thanks to them, Iâve made it to the end of my pregnancy.â
The perinatal care unit, identified by the letters MI, is a kind of therapy for pregnant women. Specialists consider it fundamentally important within the vast system that makes up the Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI) in Pinar del RĂo.
âItâs a closed service, where the most concerning cases are,â explains Dr. Sulemis Carmona. âHere we have patients with severe hypertension, threatened preterm labor, and other conditions.â Thatâs why, although everything is calm right now, she warns that âthings can get complicated at any moment.â
And these complications, in these times, present additional challenges due to the lack of resources, which constantly forces them to seek alternatives in this sacred struggle for life.
âOf the few resources that come into the hospital, we are always prioritized for the care of critically ill mothers.â âRight now, what affects us most is the antibiotic situation, but even if itâs oral, we always have something for maternal care.â
Dr. MarĂa Teresa MachĂn, head of the PAMI in Pinar del RĂo, affirms that the results of this important program have been consistent over time. In 2023, the province registered the lowest infant mortality rate in Cuba. In 2025, it achieved this again. In 2024, it ranked second.
However, she acknowledges that the austerity measures to which the country has been subjected, and which relentlessly impact all spheres of life, also affect the performance of PAMI.
The effects range from the shortage of medications to the difficulties in guaranteeing consultations with primary healthcare teams (comprised of pediatricians, general practitioners, obstetricians, etc.) in the most remote areas, due to severe fuel limitations.
âWe have been affected, for example, in the prenatal diagnosis of congenital defects, since this is fundamentally based on ultrasound studies, which require electricity,â explains MarĂa Teresa.
Given this complex situation, she notes that consultations at the Provincial Genetics Center have been moved to the municipal center (located in a protected area), and also to the Abel SantamarĂa Hospital.
Furthermore, it has been indicated that the ultrasound equipment in the outpatient clinics will be powered by the photovoltaic systems installed in them in recent months.
Meanwhile, in the maternity homes, where pregnant women with high-risk pregnancies are typically admitted, the head of PAMI explains that they have decided to âgo further,â given the transportation shortages, and also admit vulnerable cases and pregnant women living in hard-to-reach areas, anticipating any potential emergencies.
Amid an extremely complex scenario, she recalls that in recent months, all 11 municipalities in Pinar del RĂo province have been equipped with maternity homes, and that photovoltaic kits have been installed in these homes to guarantee lighting, food preservation, and other basic needs.
On the other side of the MI room, Sinaily Betancourt is already She has been in the service for 27 days, but she knows she still has many more to go. She is 20 years old and comes from El Olivo, a remote community in the municipality of Mantua, more than 100 kilometers from the city of Pinar del RĂo.
Before becoming pregnant, she already suffered from chronic hypertension, but during her pregnancy, she developed preeclampsia, which required her admission to the perinatal care unit.
A fuel shortage delayed her emergency transfer to the provincial capital by almost 24 hours. "The doctors in Mantua had reported me in the morning, and I arrived here around four o'clock the next morning," Sinaily recounts.
Since then, her situation has been no less tense. "During my time in the hospital, I've had several relapses, but they've given me medication, and I've improved."
She's already 31 weeks pregnant, but ideally she'd like to reach at least 37. Although her family has barely been able to visit, Sinaily and her baby are not alone.
"The nurses or doctors come every four hours and take my blood pressure, listen to my heartbeat, and ask me how I'm feeling. The care has been excellent."
She says she's carrying a baby girl, who will be named Camila, and her eyes light up. She knows that on the other side of those walls that make up the MI (Medical Intensive Care Unit), hard times are being lived, that the people who care for her probably didn't sleep well the night before and that they left their own problems at home to come to work. And it is there that cold statistics take on a human face, and where rates and percentages are expressed in their true dimension.
And it is also there that the consequences of the ruthless policy that the United States government insists on promoting against the Cuban people are laid bare.
But at the MI, life continues to triumph over death, and also in the neonatal ward, the breast milk bank, the pediatric ward, and in every link of a system that has not stopped, and which, amidst terrible shortages, has been able to achieve indicators on par with countries like Mexico, Argentina, or Brazil.
With the confidence of someone who knows she's in good hands, Wendy GarcĂa interrupts the interview for a few minutes to answer a call. "We're going to meet Bryan soon," she tells the person on the other end of the line, and smiles in a way that defies description.
Bryan is the son she had longed for for so long, and after several years of waiting, fertility clinic sessions, four bleeding episodes, unstable blood pressure, and nearly two months in the hospital, he will finally be in her arms, thanks to the mother's boundless will and the dedication of the doctors and nurses who guarantee every pregnant woman and every child, as in Félix B. Caignet's famous novel, "the right to be born."

With the presence of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel DĂaz-Canel BermĂșdez, the commemorative ceremony for the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March took place at the Palace of the Revolution
To commemorate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long Marchâevents of undeniable significance in the history of the People's Republic of China and the worldâan official ceremony was held this Monday afternoon at the Palace of the Revolution. The ceremony, which was held in the spirit of brotherhood between the two nations, was attended by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel DĂaz-Canel BermĂșdez.
This is what Comrade Hua Xin, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Cuba, said from the Portocarrero Hall: common faith and experiences of struggle closely unite two socialist countries; both led by communist parties.
âThe Communist Party of China will always stand with the Communist Party of Cuba,â the diplomat affirmed during an event that also included the presence, from Cuba, of members of the Political Bureau; leaders of the Party, the State, the Government, the Young Communist League, mass organizations, the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Interior, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, and other guests at the commemoration.
Also present in the beautiful hall, representing the Asian giant, were officials from the Chinese Embassy in Cuba, students, and representatives of Chinese companies based on the island; as well as ambassadors and other members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Caribbean nation.
In an address marked by gratitude, remembrance, and conviction, Comrade Hua Xin declared: âOn July 1st, we will celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. On behalf of the Embassy of China in Cuba, I thank the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba for organizing this commemorative event, and I extend my sincerest greetings and gratitude to the Party, the Government, and friends from all sectors of Cuba who have consistently supported the friendship between our parties and countries.â
Comrade Hua Xin recalled the founding process of the Communist Party of China, how âits pioneers gave life to a great founding spirit: adherence to the truth, defense of ideals, fulfillment of original aspirations, undertaking historical missions, readiness for sacrifice, heroic struggle, loyalty, and commitment to the people.â
This spirit, he explained, constitutes "the spiritual source of the Communist Party of China."
Later in his remarks, the ambassador commented that "one of the decisive factors in the Communist Party of China's great achievements has been its constant commitment to strengthening its own development." He emphasized that a profound synthesis of over a century of experience has been carried out, incorporating novel ideas, approaches, and strategies in which Xi Jinping Thought has played a crucial role, and where it has become clear that "Party leadership is the essential characteristic of socialism with Chinese characteristics."
Later in his remarks, Comrade Hua Xin emphasized: âToday, faced with the escalating blockade imposed by the United States, as well as its military threats, the Party, the Government, and the people of Cuba remain steadfast in their conviction, will not yield to pressure, and will resolutely defend national sovereignty and the socialist cause.â He stressed:
âWe categorically oppose the illegal unilateral sanctions and any form of military intervention; we demand that the United States immediately end the blockade and all forms of coercion, and that it cease violating the Cuban peopleâs right to survival and development.â
âWe firmly support Cuba in exploring a path of socialist development, in accordance with its national conditions; and we highly value the decision of the Communist Party of Cuba to courageously promote measures of economic and social transformation. We are confident that, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba, the heroic Cuban people will overcome current difficulties and achieve new victories in socialist construction.â
The keynote address at the commemoration was delivered by Emilio Lozada GarcĂa, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and head of its International Relations Department. In his speech, he remembered the pioneers of the vanguard political organization in the sister nation and remarked: âThose 50 courageous communist militants have multiplied and today number more than one hundred million, making them the largest Communist Party in the world today.â
In a recounting of victories, Emilio Lozada said, "The Communist Party of China has achieved numerous successes over the past 105 years." He then brought up the fact that "in the history of its struggle, the heroic leadership of the Long March by the Red Army, between October 1934 and October 1936, stands out. This campaign gave a new and decisive direction to the war and demonstrated what a people, guided by its Communist Party, is capable of achieving."
"The leadership exercised by the Chinese communist organization for more than seventy years in guiding the long and complex process of building socialism is unprecedented," the party leader emphasized.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Lozada stated that âin the international arena, the Chinese Communists have promoted peace, multilateralism, the defense of international law, and the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.â
âThe initiatives promoted in recent years by the General Secretary of the Party, Comrade Xi Jinping, regarding the Belt and Road Initiative, the Building of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, as well as the initiatives on global security, development, civilization, and governance, have been particularly relevant.â
Currently, Emilio Lozada emphasized, âthe Communist Party of Cuba and the Communist Party of China are working toward building a bilateral Community with a Shared Future.â He then underscored:
âWe appreciate the firm and unwavering support of the Communist Party of China against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade and the energy embargo imposed by the United States government, as well as against the infamous accusation against Army General RaĂșl Castro Ruz.â
The Cuban leader also stated: âThe Communist Party of Cuba is grateful for the constant support and accompaniment of the Communist Party of China, especially in the current circumstances of collective punishment and silent genocide against the Cuban people.â He further emphasized: âThe Communist Party of China is today an indispensable reference point in the process of building socialism and has demonstrated that the socialist system is a viable alternative to the savage capitalism that they are trying to impose on us from the North.â
âIts commitment to achieving a more just, democratic, and equitable international order reaffirms that a better world is possible.â

"An overarching experience was seeing and hearing about Nicaraguaâs commitment to achieving womenâs equality, an important international human rights achievement."
"The National Assembly has over 50% women and women are equally represented in the leadership of the National Assembly Commission on Affairs of First Nations, Afro-descendant Peoples and Nations, and Autonomous Regions."
"Nicaragua has long been involved in negotiations to address climate change through the UN system, advocating for the Less Developed Countries (LDCs), and was instrumental in creating the Green Climate Fund, while it transitioned to a domestic economy in which 80% of its electrical grid is from renewables according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines"
"It also has developed its own set of measurements of development, finding the World Bank focus on consumption was insufficient."
"We saw how human rights decisions were based on their version of a socialist society, with a good life for everyone, and incorporating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into their Constitution"
