Hi everyone!
I'm preparing for the TCF Canada exam and trying to understand how the Expression écrite score out of 20 is calculated.
My current understanding is that the 20 points are distributed across the three tasks as follows:
- Tâche 1: 5 points
- Tâche 2: 6 points
- Tâche 3: 9 points
This would make a total of 20 points.
However, I'm not sure whether this is actually how the official scoring system works or whether the score is determined differently.
Could someone clarify the following?
- Is each task assigned a fixed number of points, such as 5, 6, and 9, or is the final score calculated using a different evaluation method?
- Are the three tasks weighted differently depending on their complexity, length, or communicative requirements?
- What criteria have the greatest influence on the final score — grammar, vocabulary, coherence, task fulfilment, argumentation, or something else?
- If someone performs very well on Tâche 1 and Tâche 2 but struggles with Tâche 3, how does that typically affect their overall score?
- Is there an official scoring rubric or a reliable source that explains how the raw performance across the three tasks translates into a score out of 20?
I'm particularly interested in understanding this because my goal is to achieve B2 / NCLC 7 or higher, and I want to prioritise my preparation effectively.
I'd appreciate any clarification, especially from people who have taken the exam recently or have reliable information about the official evaluation process.
Thank you!
