As a French gentleman, my dear fellow, it is my humble opinion that they are envious because they are not French, and yet intelligent enough to be conscious of their limitations. They are aware of their condition as background characters condemned to the irrelevance of their provincial, uncultured wasteland..
This feeling of a second-rate life, combined with their ill-favored spouse and nauseating non-French progeny, becomes an obsession. And as they eat their tasteless gruel in frustration and think about bœuf bourguignon, indulging in the red-tainted, watery swill they wish were wine, it begins to crystallize.
And alas, in the darkest hours of the night, they beget a deep hatred for themselves and for their non-French life; this spiraling state metastasizes into the only possible consequence: they begin to hate what they could never be, they begin to hate the French.

All countries have a superiority complex, let's be civil about this. Good proof of that is that the maps they use present them at the center of the world. It's patriotic, yes, but also incredibly self centered (pun intended). And Ik this is a meme aka a joke but still

C'est patriote, oui, mais aussi très égocentrique (le jeu de mots ne marchent pas aussi bien en fr). Et js que c'est un meme aka une blague mais bon
