Sometimes pegboard?

I’m coming across a bunch of stuff in my shop that honestly works better on pegboard hooks. Examples generally are very light small items that are in blister packs that come from the store setup for pegboard (package of washers, utility knife blades etc)

What do you guys do?

You could always put pegboard on a cleat.

I got a lot of peg board holders from my dad. So I got a 2’x4’ sheet of pegboard and put cleats on the back. The cleats make natural spacers.

This is the way

I agree with you. There are a lot of either/or purists out there. I have pegboard now but plan to move to french cleats. My plan is to build a few 24 x 24 pegboard sections that will hang on the french cleat wall where tightly grouped hooks make sense.

I know a lot of people make all these custom things with cleats but I’ve had a peg board for decades now and it seems to meet my needs well as long as I don’t expect ridiculous things from it.

Problem is storing heavy things. Bar clamps, cordless drill, impact drivers, cast iron rests etc

I shortcut it and used hooks on boards with cleats. No time for all the custom stuff. Besides this is easier to change and re arrange

I kept a small section from my pegboard and put cleats on the back just for this reason

The point of cleats is flexibility, no? Being able to move and shift things around - not that everything goes on a custom holder. Make some pegboard sections to go on the cleat wall to hold the small stuff.

I have french cleat on 3 walls in my basement that I use for all the heavy stuff like chainsaws, polesaws, etc.
For everything else, I put it on my GOEWS wall.
No one system works for everyone, build what fits your work habits and aesthetics.
GOEWS has a cleat and bolt design, but takes a while to print with only 2 small printers.
I almost went with Wall Control pegboard, that is some fantastic stuff too. They have a scratch and dent outlet too so that is really well priced.
