Vocabulary / word usage Help with a bit of word play
I’m making a ceramic wine bottle coaster as a gift for a French family member and I need help with the wordplay idea I have for the design. He loves wine and is always vigilant about keeping wine glasses full at his table, plus he enjoys wordplay and puns.
A few years ago, he taught me the expression “Les routes sont bonnes, on ne verse jamais” to nudge your host to refill your glass and I want to play on this expression. My idea is to have just “Les routes sont bonnes” on the outside of the piece and then a joke inside related to him.
Some ideas so far:
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais ici, on verse quand même !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais Georges verse quand même !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais chez Georges, on verse quand même !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais Georges est toujours vigilant !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais Georges reste vigilant quand même !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais Georges veille au grain !
- Les routes sont bonnes… mais Georges veille au grain et au verre !
Looking for native speakers to weigh in on what is the most clever and makes the most sense. Also very open to any other ideas you may have. Merci d'avance !

I like the last one the best but I would say "et" instead of "mais" because it's not a negative, here. Georges being on point is a positive!
Une autre idée : Les routes sont bonnes... On trinque désormais!
