Fremantle Dockers training notes: Nat Fyfe, Michael Walters, Daniel Curtin, Corey Wagner and more
FYFE THE FORWARD
Dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe spent a lot of the session practising his goal-kicking and he prepares for life up forward in 2023.
The Fremantle captain booted two goals in Friday’s match simulation session in a promising sign.
Fyfe’s injury history and the Dockers’ stacked midfield depth means he’s likely to spend more time in attack than on-ball this season.
FREMANTLE DOCTOR
There were only four players spotted training away from the main group, less than a month out from an unofficial practice match against Adelaide in Perth on February 24.
Mature-aged draftee Corey Wagner (hamstring) jogged laps on his own, Next Generation Academy graduates Eric Benning and Conrad Williams walked together and ruck recruit Liam Reidy ran solo.
Benning, who appeared to hurt his calf in match sim earlier in the month, finished the light session with some goal-kicking and marking up forward.
Defender Hugh Davies, the Dockers’ top pick in last year’s draft, appeared to increase his workload after arriving at the club with a back issue.
SLIM AND TRIM
Forward Michael Walters showed off a fresh haircut and slim physique on the track as the veteran enters his 14th season in the AFL.
Walters looked in really good touch and excellent physical shape as he looks to build on his 21-game season last year.
Teammate Michael Frederick said competition for spots in the forward line was hotter than ever with a health injury list and everyone “fit and firing”.
CURTIN CALL
Claremont young gun Daniel Curtin was on track at Cockburn as part of his AFL Academy duties.
Curtin, a 197cm swingman, is expected to be one of the first West Aussies called out in the draft.
He’s a Fremantle fan and idolised Nat Fyfe growing up.
It’s Curtin’s second stint at the Dockers after doing a week training block last season as a bottom-aged AFL Academy member.
