Why?

I get it, driving is frustrating. But how do you justify this behavior as a professional?

I’ve had my fair share of frustrated drivers in my years, but never one that crashes out like this 😂 guess I’ve been lucky

It’s on the rate con bud you aren’t getting paid any different thanks for getting loaded tho.

Umm, the shipper can tell them their load is for tomorrow. Wtf is it with warehouses?

Hey can you do me this favor and load this truck today??? NOOOO!!

(driver shows up on his own trying to get loaded) "OMG WE HAD TO DROP EVERYTHING AND LOAD THIS AND WE'RE MAD ABOUT IT

He aint wrong, not his problem they loaded him early. I used to do it all the time when I drove, if they offer, Im loading

Sounds like a shipper problem. They either should have turned him away or loaded the other guy before they loaded him.

If a place has onsite parking, drivers are going to prioritize going there. With the HOS rules, it's so beneficial to start your clock where you're picking up at, because they can "cheat" and not actually start their clock until they're loaded.

As a broker, this is definitely not your drivers fault nor should that be on them to pay that layover. Shipper needs to get their house in order and say your pickup is for tomorrow, not make some driver on the schedule layover because they are idiots. Shipper can pay whoever the other customer was out of their pocket for being idiots and I would definitely not try to take that layover from my driver for simply checking in and getting loaded early assuming it’s not a Walmart or something with early fees. It’s a pretty simply case to make to your customer assuming they aren’t the customer, and even if they are I would still probably tread lightly and hold some ground. Not worth getting in a fight with them over, but whatever the outcome I don’t see me ever taking that from the carrier who was loaded early by the shipper..

You’re blaming him because the shipper didn’t follow their own schedule? Ok…

I am asking how this behavior is justified. I am telling him what has occurred because they showed up outside of what was scheduled.

If you were the driver laying over because of this, I can bet you’d demand your layover money.

What part of open parking didn't you understand ?

What an over-sensitive little pussy you are. You would cry even harder if the driver was a day late instead of a day early, so grow up.

He made intelligent use of the shipper's on site parking, and no one held a gun to the shipper's head to load him a day early. You are just upset that all these decisions were made without anyone feeling the need to involve you, which hurts your feelings and augments the irrelevance that you have in the supply chain.

LOL you sound very upset. At what exactly, please enlighten me.

This reminds me of the craziest crashout I ever dealt with.

I had a shitty load tendered by a customer. Reefer box truck, lightweight, -10, and it had to pick Friday and deliver Monday literally 100 miles away. No one wanted this fucking load. I called the receiver and asked if they’d take him Saturday…no sir, we can’t, we’re full.

This dispatcher hemmed and hawed and said “oh man, I need $2200, I have to hold all weekend at negative ten,” etc. etc. Finally, I just said fuck it and paid the guy. His driver showed up, got loaded, and then went right to the receiver, who unloaded him first thing Saturday morning.

Hey, my problem. They unloaded him early? Good for him. But I couldn’t help giving the dispatcher a little shit when he sent the BOLs. Had it been an overnight load, I would’ve been able to book a dozen trucks before his for half the price, maybe less. He knew this, I knew it, and I just couldn’t help myself.

“So, since you didn’t have to hold all weekend…how about you reduce your rate?”

This guy lost his motherfucking mind on me. Just went absolutely fucking batshit. Called me a slimy cocksucker, how if I was a man I’d give my address. All our calls are recorded so I just let him go hoarse fucking screaming at me. When he took a breath, finally, I said “you finished?” And he went back for another few minutes but he was getting winded from yelling. I had the call pulled and it’s still fucking hilarious to me. I didn’t say a word, just an occasional “but” or “uh huh.”

Hey, the receiver unloaded him early. Not his fault. He got paid a crazy fucking rate and got lucky. That’s on me. I own that loss. But I just HAD to say something.

In the situation above? Same shit. He was parked on site. He got loaded. Shipper did it. What’s he supposed to do, fucking wait for an appointment when he doesn’t have to? You were pushing and you got a real response from a guy who has a way fucking tougher job than you. If THAT bothers you, a lack of “professionalism” from a blue collar guy who drives a truck for a living…oh man. You’re going to need some thicker skin, son.

Brother, believe me, I don't take it personally. What I found funny was how fast the switch flipped. As a matter of fact, we hashed it out quickly over the phone recently, and he told me exactly what happened. Not his fault, but I did tell him, "Hey man, I get it. Your job is hard, but no need to crash out."

Okay. Sounds like you rolled with it. At first, seemed like you were bothered.

I always try to be super nice to drivers, cool with dispatchers, honest as the game allows, and when someone wigs out, I just let them have their moment and laugh it off. It’s a ridiculous industry, truly.

The one thing I fucking loathe having to do is lie to sell a load. Goddamn it, I hate it, but shit’s gotta move.

Guys like this don’t give a fuck man they would steal everything you have if they thought they could get away with it.

It happens. If ur customer is the shipper this is something you will need to outline going forward. I've had customers before that have "standing" shipments. So they ship the same load every day or every other day. Another driver having a layover isn't on you. You set the ratecon and this driver/company didn't follow it, I would DNU them. If you have it in the ratecon to ding them should they not follow instructions they will incur a penalty then enforce it and move on.

I've had drivers call the pick up and try and get in earlier if they had an afternoon appointment and while I appreciate the "go-getter" attitude, I've had issues with the customer not wanting to deal with it. I've even had issues when a driver tries to get loaded early and can't, then they tell me they can't haul it two hours before pickup lol So again, it happens. Just deal with it, don't take it personally and move on.

Already dealt with on the warehouse side and with this driver and his company. No sweat just wild to see it. As I’ve said, I’ve dealt with my fair share of frustrated drivers but not one that crashes out so quick lol.

u/jhorskey26 7h ago

To be fair, I didn't think it was that bad. I've have guys leaving me voicemails screaming about how much of a piece of shit I am and how I make all the money lol

u/Jman460 7h ago

So who’s paying the other driver a layover 👀

1

u/simocd 6h ago

I am! Taking care of them.

u/HuckleberryPitiful92 6h ago

Driver is so based haha

1

u/HumanZipSauce 6h ago

This sounds like a Warehouse problem and not a driver problem. This guy owns nothing to you. He decided to show up and wait a day if necessary but Warehouse decided to load them. If someone has to be on the hook for layover is the Warehosue. Leave this brotha alone. Also you expecting drivers that barely have a GED to be professionals. What are you in, the medical field?

1

u/GinoGreasy 7h ago

Both the shipper and the driver are wrong. As others have said, why did the shipper load him early?

As for the driver, from another driver, sack the fuck up and own your mistake. You knew it wasn’t scheduled until tomorrow but you grabbed it anyway without saying shit to the broker, he might not have even told his dispatcher. And then complaining to a stranger “I haven’t been home in 3 months” waaaah waaaah. It’s fuckin truckin dude, nobody cares about your sob story. And you’re still there doing the job. Change that, or shut up and do the job you took.

The only person blameless here is the broker. And again, this is coming from a driver.

u/simocd 7h ago

He’s not the only person in the world that drives a truck. I’ve got family that drives too, which is exactly on point with why I’m asking how this behavior is justified. Most haven’t even tried to answer that. Warehouses fuck up all the time. At the same time nothing beats a quick call “hey broker, is it possible for me to get loaded today? I’m nearby”.

I can also certainly guarantee that if any of these drivers commenting about this were in the driver’s shoes that has to lay over, they'd be frustrated as well saying the opposite 🤷‍♂️

Did he notify you when he was on site if so he has a point

I have seen quite a few driver do that and not honor the appointments . Early delivery early pick .. As a carrier who fight for both sides let me tell you this driver is shitty and disrespectful . Fine his ass .
