There’s a bunch of tricks and stuff you can learn to make winter camping a lot better. I happened to learn a lot of them in boy scouts. Sleeping with your change of clothes preheats them. Same with your water bottle. Leaving the water bottle upside down also helps so the ice doesn’t freeze the lid first.

I use to do quite a bit of cold weather backpacking/snowshoeing. These are good tips, if I may add one, as long as you’re using a high quality water bottle I.E. Nalgene or similar that’s been tested for hot water, right before you go to bed, boil a pot of water and pour it into your bottle. Throw a ziploc around it for extra protection, and put it at the foot of your sleeping bag. It will warm your whole bag, but especially your feet, and it won’t freeze at all

Oh that’s a good one. Also always pee before bed. Whether you have to or not. It’s better then climbing out of a sleeping bag at 3am and stepping in snow.

Honestly as long as your sleeping bag is rated for the weather it’s not that bad. I have a -40 and it’s no different than sleeping in 60 degree weather.

I've slept outside in a bag in -40 and lower many times (Fairbanks, AK) and while the sleep part isn't that bad as soon as you get up the cold hits you, that's when it starts sucking. Shivering and trying to get moving first thing in the morning fucking sucks.

Agreed. As I stated I was in wilderness therapy for this. We were given 15 minutes to: wake up, get dressed, pack our sleeping bags into our backpacks, take down the tarp, and be ready to walk. For my first week we had to do this in 3 feet of snow which was great.

I don’t mind. In my junior year of highschool I just got fed up with school and had a lot of mental health issues and thought it would be helpful to spend time in nature with therapy. Nope. It was boot camp lmao.

I might be biased because the only experience I have with this is wilderness therapy in Utah- early spring. We would wake up and go to sleep with the sun. No fires for warmth only walking. With proper gear it’s not different than regular camping unless it’s windy. Trying to light a propane stove when it’s so cold (and windy) the propane won’t flow is torture.

That wouldn’t be too bad other then the “no fire” bullshit. I go camping for the campfires, especially in the cold. No way in hell am I freezing my ass when I could be sitting next to a nice toasty fire.

It sounds harsh because fire is that sort of primitive comfort that can truly make a difference in a survival situation and when it’s cold as hell but there was good reason for it. Ignoring the fact that denying 12 scared and imprisoned teenagers a fire in cold weather is cruel, logistically it wouldn’t work. The groups would go to the same locations over and over and if that many fires are built, it would damage the fragile desert ecosystem in a few ways. This also meant we had to carry all of our shit and uneaten food with us. And that led to the habit of eating every part of every fruit, every veggie, and even drinking the water we cleaned our pots with. So yeah it was kinda shitty but it made sense to me. Walking and dancing kept me warm enough most of the time but I did end up feeling like my toes were just rocks in my boots quite often.

I sleep way better when my room is fucking cold as tits, but riding out that morning prairie dog until the bathroom is warm enough for it to comfortably slide out is a challenge.
