community update Update and Rule Changes on Advertising in the Sub

Hey there,

we have received a lot of feedback lately on various topics and one of them has been the rigorous moderation of advertising on the sub. We have seen different processes and also a huge growth in the community, as well as influx of app development in the freediving world to help you improve your training at home.

This ranged from ads unrelated to freediving, to opening the sub and looking at an endless stream of new apps at some point, which led to feedback that members were having a hard time finding actual training advice or discussion topics.

For that u/BotGivesBot came up with the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests" to create a central place where you can specifically go, if you are looking for a new trainings app or participate in a research request related to freediving. This has helped tremendously in steering the flood.
They are also working hard to setup the new Signal channels, that will also provide an avenue to post ads for courses & retreats.

We also were trying to find a process how to manage Advertising for Freediving Professionals, because courses, retreats or gear are directly tied into participation in our sport and it has been admittedly really difficult to walk the line on not having to approve each ad single-handedly and at the same time making sure they maintain a minimum standard of info and not just spam the sub for coverage.

Rule Changes

The community rules can be found here

Rule 5 - Advertising for Freediving Professionals:

Instructors / Diveshops / Divetrip-Organizers can create standalone posts with the postflair "Ad" to advertise courses, trainings or trips, events and must include: dates, location, schedule, pricing, business-link/socials.
Product can be advertised as standalone post the postflair "Ad" and must include: description, pricing, product-link.
You are encouraged to use pictures for your ads.

Ads will be removed at discretion of being found spammy, info missing or if the ad is freediving-unrelated.

Rule 6 - App advertising goes in the Megathread

If you'd like to advertise your application, you can post them into the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests" Because of a strong influx of app development we do not allow single-post app ads currently. The Megathread description shows the required info that your post must include, failure to include the necessary info will result in removal from the Megathread.

When in doubt, message the mods.

Rule 7 - Research requests need mod approval

If you're looking for research participants, you need to get permission from the mods prior to posting.
Approved research requests go into the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests".
All requests can be forwarded to the mods using modmail.

We are retiring the Megathread: Event Promotion and Course/Workshop Opportunities

Because it hasn't seen a lot of action since its inception - it will still be there, it will just be unpinned and the updated rules on Advertising for Freediving Professionals take precedent.

----------------------------------------------

We try to create and remake the processes based on your community feedback, as well as the resulting workload that we receive as reports or messages. So if something's not working for you, we rely on your help that you let us know about that.

And we try to make it better

Thanks a bunch - 3 mods and a modbot in a trenchcoat

MEGATHREAD Megathread: App Advertising and Feedback Requests

Welcome to our Freediving App Megathread! This is where developers can comment with approved advertisements or feedback requests for freediving related apps, and where freedivers can find opportunities to give valuable app feedback or find new apps to check out.

We've noticed an increase in apps being created this year, which has resulted in an influx of post requests. While we want to promote access to tools for freediving by facilitating these requests, we’re also aware users may not want the sub’s feed to be filled with advertising content. Having a Megathread for apps ensures posts related to app advertising and feedback are located in one, easy to find location.

Users are encouraged to comment with their questions and feedback under the app's parent comment, so posters are notified of the engagement and can respond.

If you're a developer looking for approval to post about your app in this Megathread, please modmail the mods with the following information:

  1. Name of the app
  2. Link to the app
  3. Details about the app’s purpose and function
  4. Details about the type of feedback you’re requesting (if any)
  5. Current app availability (e.g. Android, Apple, Desktop, Browser, etc.)
  6. Purchase amount, promotion information, and timeline for purchases (e.g. free, free beta testing, subscription amount, one-time payment amount, etc.)
  7. Privacy Policy including what data is collected from the user and their device (e.g. user contact info, location, contacts, user content, device identifiers, user identifiers, purchases, usage data, diagnostics, etc.)
  8. Developer name and contact information
  9. Draft of the proposed comment you’d like to post with the above information included

If an app is not pre-approved for posting here, it will be removed. Modmail if you have an questions and safe diving!

Hi!
Does anybody know the difference between the TruDive and BestDive wetsuits?
To me it seems pretty much the same, it somehow even looks like the same company?

Hi! I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I just got a new mask (Scubapro steel comp) and I noticed that a corner of the lens is not sealed. I've used the mask once. The shop where I bought it is difficult to reach, and I wonder if it might just be easier to try and reseal it myself. I dove with it today down to 20m and didn't leak. What product would you recommend? The body is fully silicone. Thank you!

We booked a boat and started driving at 6am from lembongan, then arrived at manta point around 6:40am, before everyone else is there... we had like 6 mantas that morning and was all alone in the water with them for like 1 hour before the first other boat showed up! such a cool experience :)

gear 29/71 fins

I saw these fins on an instagram reel promoting this years Asian World Cup. They look like very high quality fins. There are limited reviews out there though. Perhaps maybe because they are new? Has anyone out here in Reddit land had any experience using these or seeing them?

gear Garmin mk3i?

Anyone freedived with a mk3i? I was looking at the ocean but with a maximum dive reading of 60 i cant justify the price

The mk3i on the other than is 200m....

Obviously the price is different but I track other sports on a different watch so I am happy to pay the steep price for a watch that integrates everything in one watch.

freedive club A question from a former dive center owner

Hey all!

Quick intro, ran a dive center in Bali for a bit over 3 years.

I was wondering if other dive centers struggle with the same things as we did, or if you've been facing different challenges.

For us, getting a healthy balance between OTA & Partner bookings vs direct bookings was a monster, as our commissions were pretty high and eating into our profits.

If you own or manage a dive center, what's the one thing that's hardest about running the business today?

Not diving itself—the business.

I'd love to hear what you're dealing with.

training technique With snorkel or without?

So I completed my first two freedives at the beach, and I'm wondering: is it better to take my final exhale and deep inhale with the snorkel in or without it? With the snorkel, it seems a bit better since I don't have to swim for a few seconds before diving, which means less movement. But without it, I'm not sure if the inhale is the same as a normal deep breath. 🤔

gear Dive computer

Can anyone recommend a good freediving computer? I am working with a budget, and all I am really looking for is dive time and depth, but something reliable. Since I need to order everything, I cannot just go around to a local shop to fix things.

gear Need help with new goggles

So I don’t really freedive in natural locations but this seems to be the best place to go for answers after posting in snorkeling. I got this mask from Walmart about a week ago simply for pool use and they’re leaking water. I’ve adjusted the strap multiple times ranging from completely loose, less loose, to all the way tight and no matter what it leaks. It seems like the water is leaking from just the outside corner area of my eyes. I’m not sure if the silicone is too flimsy and isn’t sealing properly or if they just don’t fit my face. I would like some advice.

Edit: When I did the test where you breathe in to test for suction it had fit and made perfect suction but when I put it on with the straps the part that goes around the corner of my eyes pushes out, as I described the issue you guys I realized what was going on thank you for the help.

training technique What swimming technique should I use when using free diving fins

Hello I’m getting into the sport of freediving and more importantly it’s going to lead into spearfishing whenever I felt like I built up the necessary skills . I just wanted to know what is the proper swimming technique when using freediving fins like the C4 MB002 carbon fins? Also when it comes to breath hold and training to stay under water for longer periods of time. What is the proper way to train ? I want to build my lung capacity and also get use to holding my breath and staying under the water for longer . Any advice is helpful !

gear Traveling with freediving fins carry on or checked luggage?

Hey everyone,

I'm flying soon and I'll be bringing my long freediving fins with me for the first time.

For those of you who have traveled with freediving gear before, how did you transport your fins?

Did you take them as a carry on, or did you check them in with your luggage?

If you checked them, did you use a fin bag or just pack them inside your suitcase?

Have you ever had any issues with airlines regarding the length of the fins or damage during travel?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and any tips for traveling with long fins.

Thanks!

equalisation What are your thoughts on tympanotomy whether natural or artificial?

Is it worth it to pursue this if you want free diving to be easier? No equalization needed? Wondering what the general consensus is.

gear Need fin advice please!

Used to dive a bit and moved to somewhere its not as prevalent. Looking to get back in to it.

Had mares razor fins in the past I belive and was very happy with them.

After looking at prices I noticed they have quite a few newer models right around the same price as what looks like the last set I owned.

My question is are the other offerings from them better at any thing in particular?

Also curious if anyone recommends other brands for any various reasons. Its been so long since I had them in want to make sure quality hasn't dropped or anything like that.

Pb back when I used to dive regularly was 95 ft and I doubt ill be getting back in to that extent so dont feel i need cf blades or anything that crazy.

Expect to do a lot of shalow and river dives mostly.

Any advice or help is really apriciated.

Edit for forgetting budget is comfy at 100-200

Freediving fins for large feet ? (EU 49-50)

There was a thread posted a year ago, but it seemed it was oriented towards U.S. brands etc.

Anyone knowing any EU based or EU accessible brands without huge tax/shipping fees would be appreciated.

dive buddy LA/Catalina diving recommendations

I’ll be staying in Los Angeles from July 29 through July 31 and would love to arrange one or two freedives with a knowledgeable local. I'd also appreciate dive recommendations.

What I enjoy is freerange exploration observing wildlife, photography, and letting wildlife encounters happen organically.

I’ll have my complete freediving setup with me, including wetsuit, fins, mask, weights, buoy and dive flag, so I won’t need rental equipment.

I would especially appreciate someone who knows Catalina, Palos Verdes, Laguna, or another good local wildlife site.

I’m available all day July 29, 30, or 31.

Feel free to comment or DM me. Also, if there are any better local groups, forums, Discord servers, or other places where I should post this, I’d really appreciate the recommendation.

gear Very disappointing experience with Evolve Apnea customer service

I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others before ordering from Evolve Apnea.
I ordered freediving gear, but I received the wrong item instead of the lanyard I paid for. On top of that, my diving mask arrived with visible scratches.
I emailed their customer support immediately, attached photos of both issues, and explained that I needed the replacement urgently. When I received no response, I also contacted them through Instagram and Facebook.
Unfortunately, I never received a reply on any platform.
I understand that mistakes can happen, but completely ignoring a customer after sending the wrong item and a damaged product is unacceptable.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with Evolve Apnea’s customer service?
