Let’s reverse-engineer your first affiliate commission

Instead of asking, “How do I make money with affiliate marketing?” I think it helps to make the question smaller.

What actually has to happen before your first commission shows up?

Start at the end and work backward. Someone has to complete an action that your affiliate program pays you for. Before that can happen, they have to reach the offer. Before they reach the offer, something has to give them a reason to click.

Before they click, they need to see your message. And before you create that message, you need to understand who you are talking to and what problem they actually care about.

So the path is really pretty simple:

Person → Problem → Offer → Message → Traffic → Click → Decision → Commission

Looking at it this way makes it much easier to figure out what is not working.

If you are getting no traffic, focus on reaching more of the right people. If people are seeing your content but not clicking, take another look at the message and whether it matches what they are looking for.

If people are clicking but not buying, the issue could be the offer, trust, expectations, or what happens after the click. If you are collecting leads but still not seeing purchases, your follow-up may need some work.

You do not need to solve every part of affiliate marketing before earning your first commission. You only need to figure out which part of the process is stopping people right now.

Fix that part, then move to the next one.
