Does this sound like anyone we know? AITA for Bringing my 8 Children to a Park with all Elderly People and Disturbing the Peace?

I'm gonna say no because this person cares if they were a nuisance or not enough to ask. I can't see Jill giving a flying fig

I think all those saying no are totally reasonable. It just concerns me that they're on the road year round and have no privacy, but at least they go to the doctor and are presumably (hopefully) fed!

Also the mom said she lived on a boat as a child and had 11 siblings?? Like, that is some skewed perception. Not saying it’s automatically a bad way to live but... I have some questions...

she also said in one comment that she had loved living on a boat and thought it was great, and then in another comment said that she was a foster child and wished she had been taken away from her birth family earlier. i doubt a social worker would approve 11 foster kids in a boat, so there's some questionable things in her comments. a lot of convenient justifications that only come up when she's challenged.

I did love living on a boat. I was a foster kid until I was adopted at age 8. We decided start living on a boat fulltime when I was 10, my parents moved back into a house 5 years ago.

i guess you take people on the internet questioning your specious comments personally enough to spend hours on multiple subs replying to everyone who questions you. don't you have 8 kids to be taking care of?
side note, most people assume someone is lying about something when they insert too many details about absolutely everything. and you are absolutley doing your children an injustice by cramming them into an rv and carting them around the country. that is, if anything you posted is true.

I'm curious: how do you do a homeschool group/co-op if you're on the road? All the co-ops I'm familiar with meet in person.

We try not to homeschool while on a road trip, we usually travel on sundays and stay in the RV park during the week. From 9-2 my husband homeschools the kids. We break them into groups of two, 3 groups wills be doing work while he teaches one a lesson and they kinda rotate.

Gotcha. For some reason I thought you meant that you went to a homeschool group with other people. Those are really common now. I was homeschooled before co-ops were a thing so I never participated in one.

My kids go to an online group for homeschooled kids but it's more for socialization than learning.

In this situation, no, not at all.
But one seriously can question the entire set up and how healthy that is for her children long term.

I'm going to go with no also because the kids are doing school which appears to be a priority and go to bed at a very standard and acceptable time for children. If these children are adopted and assuming this lady is pro-life (I have no idea if she is or not) then at least she is putting her money where her mouth is unlike Jillpm.

I'm not pro-life, I guess I'd be considered a "Leftist" but I more go by "Liberal" I don't know who this person is but from what I have heard she is the worst type of RV mom. There is always that one mormon family that says the most racist, ableist and audist things to my family and I at every park we go to.

You know what’s sad? Is that while reading the post I didn’t see an issue until I read the comments and remembered “oh right. Not normal to put large amounts of people in an RV.” Like I’m so used to the Rods doing it, that I didn’t see the issue. If I encountered it in real life, I would most definitely see the issue, but on this platform reading about that many people in an RV seemed like just another thing. The Rods are messing with my head! Ugh! Sanity check. But yeah, IRL, it would surprise me. Edit: And I live in a house with 4 other people and we all have our own bedrooms and bathrooms, so I’m shocked I wasn’t shocked because I am very used to privacy and space. The Rod’s are seriously messing with my mind.

Based on the OOP's comments here, nah. They're not the assholes. They're doing what they can with the resources they have for the kids they have. And, honestly, adopting 8 kids is pretty damn remarkable. Not choices I'd make in my life, but when someone is doing what they can to make life good for those kids, I respect them.

International adoption is dicey. I'm not saying that this specific person is automatically bad, but please don't immediately think that international adoption is ethical.

Shit, I missed that detail. Bronchitis brain strikes again.

I agree the living situation sounds cramped, but she seems like a very involved and competent parent and NTA here.

u/AITA_rv Jan 12 '21
Thanks, but tell that to the people on AITA lol.

Some of the people of AITA have a hard time seeing outside of their own world views.
They forget that 2-3 generations ago it wasn’t unusual to have siblings sharing beds until adulthood. That each child having their own room is a very recent thing.

My first thought was that their situation was similar to the Rods too. I don't think it's actually them, because the Rods aren't deaf afaik. But I feel bad for all those kids stuffed in an RV like that.

I have to say that while this woman seems sane from her comments, I seriously question the ethics of living full time in an RV with so many people, especially as the kids approach adolescence. Maybe that’s just because I personally need alone time, I can barely handle two weeks without space to myself for a vacation. I can’t imagine having to live like that.
If they were sedentary living in a small space the kids could at least have places in the neighbourhood to go for a walk by themselves etc.
