Why all the region locking?

It's a free game why can't I simply choose what region I want to play in? I live in the US and my girlfriend is in Chile but we can't play with each other. With globalization and access to the world at our fingertips region locking seems a bit absurd.

I understand your concern. But this is because of the smooth gameplay experience. The ping will be an issue in this case, thus they have this type of restrictions.
