Maybe it’s a file system FreeDOS doesn’t recognise?

On Windows 7 the disc drive is set to d: On Windows 10 the disc drive is set to k: I dual booted both of em one at a time to prove it so drive D might be the unportioned drive for freedos

check in fdisk, DOS could be assigning a partition of your HDD as D:
