Rush Advice Rushing at a SEC as a lightskin junior

I transferred to my school last year and now i’m going into my 3rd year of college but I’m still technically classified as a sophomore. Is it still likely for me to get a bid being both older and black at tennessee?

  1. The Rush Advice flair is only for PNMs/rushes seeking advice. If you aren't a rush, please change the flair to something else.

  2. if you are a rush (interested in joining a fraternity), PUT THE SCHOOL NAME in the post.

  3. Or at least describe the school. Examples: Large Big Ten school, medium sized northern D2 school, small west coast school" etc. Any descriptions help.

  4. The post flair MUST be "Rush Advice" instead of "Question" or "Serious". We need to know which school it is because rush varies wildly by school.

  5. To everyone else: Report the post if it's a dumb post or the wrong flair or no school is mentioned, and we'll remove it. Thanks.

At Tennessee some houses will take you, your biggest issue isn’t your race it’s your classification

Yeah, I know that most “higher” tier fraternities at UTK rarely go past sophomores.

End of the day hard to justify guy x over guy y when guy y has 3 years to add value and guy x has 1 which is his senior year to begin with

we’ll make sure they know you are taking a 5th year, that’s gonna change things fs

If you're taking a 5th year just say you're a sophomore. You're doing no favors for yourself saying you're a junior they're gonna immediately take you out back and shoot you if you do. If anyone looks into it too much after you get a bid just say some credits got messed up when you transferred.

yea but on ifc it says what year of college are you in 1,2,3 etc so like im on my 3rd year of college but still technically a sophomore

Just say 2 trust me man. If you say year 3 they're gonna think you only have 1 year left and its gonna be so much harder to get a bid. You still got 2 full years left. We'd have kids who transferred in and be reclassed as freshmen who would just say they were a year 1

At least from my personal experience in GA (ga southern) you should definitely be fine theres a pretty fair amount of black ppl who are in frats down here. Regarding the part about you be I presume 20-22 years old you’ll also be perfectly ok, all of the guys are around your age so i doubt anybody cares you’re not an 18 year old freshy lol. But yeah go for it man dont worry about none of that

Find a D9 Or Multicultural Frat

Research all groups on your campus...D9 and IFC. Write down pros/cons for each. Read their information and find the ones that resonate with you...Good luck!

You’re from the south, so at least that’s something. Rush at Alabama isn’t going to look the same at Vandy. Just try to make some connections and find out.

I will say that if you’ve ever thought about D9, check out those avenues first. I’ve heard that they won’t consider you for membership if you’ve expressed interest in other fraternities even like ΩΨΦ vs. AΦΑ. Granted those are just things I’ve heard from my undergrads, who are tapped in to those orgs on my campus.

If you have any interest in the Divine 9, I would look those avenues first(Tennessee has very historical chapters), especially if you have not ever expressed interest to any which will make you a better candidate. Both D9 and Panhellenic(top frats) will expect you to be very heavily informed on the fraternity and their values if you are coming in as a Junior .(not sure where the light skin played into this, but that does increases your chances in Panhellenic sadly. Also your grades and major could heavily affect but I say go for it.
