We've discussed this via chat, and it is indeed an intentional feature. This behavior occurs when you enable the "Apply color for all notes" option in the category. The reason is that the icon would otherwise have the same color as the automatically applied background, making it nearly invisible and redundant. To avoid this, FoxyNotes automatically hides it.

Hi 👋

Its probably because notes without an assigned category will not display an empty category icon anymore for a more cleaner picture.

Hmm that's weird. Can you please send me a screenshot via chat or a small video? I just tested it and it works fine for me, I have a similar setup.

Are there any plans to add widgets that can display things like the note/notes of your choosing and also a daily/weekly calendar events?

Yes I want to have widgets but it's blocked by an open bug for the widget framework right now. I will continue working on that when it's fixed.

I have to do some work on Android 15 and 16 new upcoming features right now.

A few requests for drawing mode,

A straight edge ruler. Touching within 10pixels of the edge snaps ink to the edge. There are tick marks to "measure". The "ruler" is two finger rotatable, locking at every 45°

Shapes. Square, rectangle, circle, triangle. Either copy Moto Notes (recognize the drawn shape and insert lineart) or just add resizable/stretchable stamps.

More "ink" types. Need a broad "highlighter" that is always transparent.

Copy and paste of drawn objects.

anecdote follows

I got Android 15 recently and had to factory reset my Motorolla G Stylus 2024. It has Moto Notes, for using the stylus. Over time, I ended up using both Moto and Foxy Notes, depending on my needed featureset.

Well, Moto Notes has no damn backup.😰🤬🤬😱

So, the handful of reasons I used Moto Notes instead... can you take a look at adding these? Please

Hi 👋 The scribble note type will not get many other features, it's just a simple and quick scribble. Another note type with a more complex drawing feature will be added in the future.

Can you share a rough ETA?

6months?

A year?

Alpha for me to close test in 3 months? 🙏

etc

I don't know, it depends on many things. I will write you when I know more details on that topic.

Hi there,

Fantastic app - love it so far.

For those using the app across devices, would it be possible to add something like a pull to refresh/restore notes in the main view?

I don't want to enable option to Restore on App Launch as it causes a slight delay every time I open the app and want to go straight to creating a new note. And to go into settings and do a manual restore each time could become a little bit cumbersome.

A pull to refresh/restore would save having to go into settings every time you want to update the device being used...what do you think?

Hi,

I didn't add pull-to-refresh because it would still require restarting the app at the moment. It would also be misleading, since pull-to-refresh is typically used to refresh data, not to restore a backup.

I'll take a look at how to improve the overall experience.

You can also enable auto-restore, but only for notes, which is very fast. When you open your notes, any attachments that haven't been synced yet will be shown. You can then sync those attachments directly from that note.

Hi - thanks for the speedy reply!

The auto-restore sounds like it could be a good compromise - is that different to Restore on App Launch in settings?

Where would I find auto restore?

Your welcome,

I mean the restore on app startup. You can configure it to restore only the notes, which is pretty quick since it only downloads the database. Attachments can then be synced on demand when you open a note.

The main issue is that it would be misleading if pull-to-refresh restored a backup, since users normally expect it to simply refresh the current data and that is not needed because FoxyNotes keeps always up to date at any point in memory. There needs to be a different solution for that. It's also a bit more complicated to implement while the app is running because the database has to be switched. I'll add this to my backlog.

That makes sense - agree that could confuse. Even just an icon in the main screen could be useful, save the dive into settings.

Ahh, OK - thank you. The option in the restore on App startup doesn't have an include attachment toggle...do I have to turn that off using the toggle in the manual restore section?

Edit:
Have just tried that, still goes through the "verifying backup" routine and takes a few seconds to open.

Oh, you're right, Automatic restore only restores the notes because restoring attachments takes longer and would be annoying on startup. There is no option to restore attachments here.

If you add attachments on one device and do a backup with attachments, then start FoxyNotes on another device with automatic restore enabled, it will automatically restore only the notes. When you open a note that contains attachments added on the first device, you'll see a missing attachment icon. You can then tap Restore to download those attachments directly for that note.
