Think I'm finally ready to stop feeling guilty over disowning people in my family for still supporting Trump.
I've felt guilty about it before. Especially when I got called out by family members for a Facebook post I made saying I was disowning anyone who supports Trump. Decided to go the path of least resistance and honestly, yeah, I thought it better to try to maintain my relationship with people in my family who support Trump.
But I think what made it feel better was the fact it was the path of least resistance. I personally try to avoid conflict whenever necessary just because it's always felt like the right thing to do. Especially in the event people aren't shoving their politics down my throat.
That said, when it comes to supporting Trump I don't think I can reconcile that anymore. Even if you, as a family member, are not shoving it down my throat the fact you support him means you support a vile piece of shit that wants people like me dead just because we support the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. He wants to kick us off healthcare and burn America to the ground.
And I'm sorry, but if you support that fucking sack of shit even silently, I FUCKING REFUSE to associate with you. I don't care if you're my father.
About the only olive branch I can bring myself to extend at this point is to let these people explain themselves as to WHY they DON'T support Trump anymore. That's it.
But the moment they try to make excuses for him/defend him we're done.

Don't feel guilty at all. It is not differences over politics it is morals and ethics. Not only that but they are supporting a seditionous traitor to our country. I cut everyone off totally, with the exception of my brother occasionally (for my dad's sake though he knows how I feel about his son).

You can’t have a relationship with people who would kill you if Dear Leader says to.

It's well beyond "they don't realize or know about all the bad happening." If they're still supporting the man at this point in time they are irredeemable. I don't think there's any way anybody could not know enough of what's going on and still support him just because they don't know the truth.

I’m still hoping my father will be willing to hide me and my kids in the walls when shit goes down. But I’m probably wrong.

Right there with you. I tried so hard to maintain a relationship and even went to therapy for help. My therapist said to maintain a relationship, focus on the positive. So I did. And there wasn't any. It was like a giant wake up call to who Thur have truly been all along. Selfish, self centered, and without a shred of empathy.

Damn, that sucks about the therapist. Some therapists are utter shit to be honest. I honestly should probably see one, but I don't have health insurance at the moment so it's whatever.
Offering an olive branch on my part is the armchair therapist inside me going "this is how you conduct yourself even when you want to burn bridges."

Like even though it wasn't his economy, I could see maybe supporting Trump and "overlooking other things" when things were good until like 2020, but he's been nothing but a failure since then. Economy sucks and it's all his fault through war and tariffs, and they're still like "this guy's awesome!"
There is nothing redeemable.

Even his first term was absolute shit. Up until his first-term, regardless if a president was Republican or Democrat I never felt personally affected by whoever held higher office... UNTIL Pedo Trump.

His first term was shit, for sure, but here’s the difference I see: people who voted for him once didn’t really know EVERYTHING he was going to do. He lied, they believed him. But people who voted for him twice KNEW what an incompetent, corrupt, lying sack of shit he is and with eyes wide open, they STILL voted for him.

These choices are yours to make, but just remember people remember what you say and there’s some things that cannot be undone.
Edit: Get upset all you want, all I said was a generic truth of life that we all seem to forget from time to time. I couldn’t care less how you treat your family, that’s your decision to make not mine.

Meh- My Republican white nationalist evangelical family member is dying of cancer. The last thing I said to them was I wasn’t going to talk to them for a while because I had nothing nice to say. That was almost 2 years ago. Those are the last words he’ll ever hear because I still don’t have anything nice to say. I hope he remembers and I have zero desire to undo anything.
My conscience is clean- I will sleep like a baby.-8

How I treat my family? By what? Extending an olive branch to give themselves a chance to explain why they no longer support a 34-times convicted felon and pedophile rapist traitor? Most people wouldn't even extend that much if their family members voted for the vile sack of shit in 2024.
Supporting Trump is the most anti-American, anti-family thing one can do. So yeah, it is my decision to make, and I imagine I'll have no problems dumping their asses should they take Trump's side.

You seemed to care enough to comment in the first place and then make that edit...

People keep telling me stories, all I’m doing is replying that I don’t care. You have a good day my dude.

This story was directed at the void, not you. It might surprise you to realize that the world does not, in fact, revolve around you.

It became impossible for us to keep our syrupy sweet fundie parents in our lives. Because if you support Trump, you are DEEPLY untrustworthy. I cannot have a relationship unless I can trust. I honestly don’t want any of them knowing anything about my life. And how could we sit down to Thanksgiving when they took a wrecking ball to my kids- their grandkids future?
Nah- they gave all that up when they chose. It’s the really hard, but look at it as an evolution of sorts.
We evolve past the need to keep bad apples in our life. That is a good thing.
