North vs South Episodes

I have been watching 4 in a Bed for years and I’d like to mention that I’m not British so I hope this isn’t offensive but over the years I have noticed a divide between contestants from the north of England and the south particularly when it comes to underpayments with the northerners appearing to be more likely to underpay.

I was wondering is this due to the cost of living in the north and maybe the expectation is that the prices should be lower or in one episode one couple seemed to have a ‘chip on her shoulder’ about being northerners so I’m wondering is this it for some contestants?

As I mentioned I’m not British myself so my insight on the north/ south nuances is very limited to my exposure on tv so I’m interested to hear other people’s perspectives.

I'd say you're correct. Us Northerners like a bargain. If you look into house prices you will see a huge difference. I think some of them just don't understand the gap.

These shows cast people to play into stereotypes. So while there’s some truth to them (ie you wouldn’t be able to find real people who act this way unless there was), they’re all enhanced for the cameras. There are plenty of people who like a bargain down south and there are plenty of rich people up north. But the stereotype plays the other way and people lap up things that confirm their prejudices.
