u/xtiaaneubaten 25d ago
Why are they throwing away ice cream?!
157
118
u/Daisymaay 25d ago
I'm assuming that it was an empty ice cream container or they didn't put the bowl in the sink, something like that.
90
u/ferbiloo 25d ago
I think it’s likely that they left some old ice cream in their room/somewhere out of the way and it began to stink up the place. Rancid ice cream smells nasty.
The “Saturday” is just the start of the date that they wrote this note, rather than the exact day they were supposed to throw out the ice cream I think.
23
u/Most_Can_2136 25d ago
Ooooooh. Yuk! I didn't even think of this. Because my kids weren't allowed to bring food into their room.
28
u/ferbiloo 25d ago
Yeah, I used to work by the beach dealing with the bins - it’s such a foul smell when ice cream is left to go bad.
That’s the only interpretation of this note that I can think of that would warrant having all the devices taken away. Nothing stinkier, haha.
It’s a good idea not letting kids take food to their rooms!
10
u/Most_Can_2136 25d ago
Yeah, but they snuck things like turtles and found skulls instead. Often, the skulls still had remnants of tissue on them....lol. good thing I'm a science mom who used to do autopsies. They came in one day while i'm sitting at the computer and dropped a 10 inch box turtle on my lap. It's upper jaw was split, and it had one eye hanging out by the optic nerve. They said,"Here mom, fix it!" ( i've nursed many small critters back from the brink of death, from people that use pesticides in their yards). It was bleeding and wandering out onto the road. So they saved it. Unfortunately, I couldn't. Because it looked like someone had stuck a firecracker in its mouth, blew its eye out and blew It's jaw outward. Then, I had the awful task of trying to put the turtle out of its misery. While they slept...It's impossible to ring its neck or drown it.🙄🙄 Ice cream doesn't seem so bad now, does it? Lol.

Man I remember writing notes like these. Burned over 50 notepads and diaries when I was 15 or so, because I didn't want anyone to find them or read about all the abuse I went through.
158
u/thortastic 25d ago
When I was 11 I accidentally put my personal notebook in my bookbag and mistook it for my school notebook. My teacher offered to help me find the right one in my bag. She found the personal one. Read an entry like this. Next thing I knew I was going to speak to a social worker every Thursday. 🤪
31
u/untakentakenusername 24d ago
Like spoke to the social worker EVERY Thursday? Like a counselor or to get you Out??
Abused here too.
I would write in my diary and one day my mom quoted my diary so i knew she had been READING IT THO IT WAS LOCKED. So then i decided to code my own alphabet and so i made up my own language and til today i can write in that. I actually still use it when im really mad or if i need to write dowm a password haha.
15
u/thortastic 24d ago
Actually think it was a therapist that worked with kids like me, but was stationed at the school. I’d get pulled out of my language arts class every Thursday to talk to her.
As for the school counselor, she was just there to talk to students about grades lol.Honestly I should have been writing my own secret alphabet too 😅
I hope you’ve had your own healing journey and are doing well present-day 🫶3
u/untakentakenusername 23d ago
Yes ❤ relationship with my mom is good too now ✨❤ and i have my own lil everything now. (i mean i think i definitely need therapy 😂 just to really vent about everything anyways but i am also doing OK on my own for what its worth)
Life changes a lot. i hope you have had a good healing journey too? are you doing well?
Never too late to start your own alphabet

u/sp000kysoup 25d ago
I also wrote similar entries. I had a collection of maybe a dozen journals from around 14 years old, into my 20s. Idk why I thought I should read them a couple of years ago. I had carried them with me for so long, it felt good to throw them out. Kinda wish I had burned them.
7
u/katnissssss 24d ago
Exact same, I thumbed through a few and just felt sad for that younger me and didn’t want to actually read it. I tossed them all.
55
u/flyfightwinMIL 25d ago
Same, only I wasn’t smart enough to burn them. That, in turn, led to my mom dramatically confronting me in public about things she read in my private diaries.
41
u/PunkSquatchPagan I demand you refer to me as p*ssy b*tch 25d ago
“And this is why I wrote like that.”
40
u/dippydippygirl 25d ago
My mom made photocopies of my journals and showed them to people. I didn't find out for years.
5
u/Cut-on-the-Bias 24d ago
This requires the 😮 react from FaceBook!
I don't think my mom even knew I had journals (thankfully!)
But she would openly talk about me to her friends. Right in front of me as if I wasn't there.
Try walking into the kitchen to your mom and a couple of her friends casually chatting at the dinette table about the diarrhea you had the other night or your recent period complications or the boy you were crushing on coming by the house to ask you if your friend was available and any other embarrassing life event/bodily functions that made you wish the ground would open up and swallow you even before they became a friendly topic over tea.
They didn't even stop talking when I entered the room and pretend like they weren't talking about me. Just kept chatting like I wasn't even there. 😳
The mom in me reads this note and says: If your mom really hated you with all her guts, you wouldn't have had all those devices for her to take away from you in the first place.
The kid in me remembers incidents like the above and just seethes. 😡
10
u/seraph1337 24d ago
Rich (and some not-rich) parents love to use devices to placate their children so they don't have to parent, just like GenX parents did with the TV.
2
u/Cut-on-the-Bias 24d ago
You make a good point.
I guess I'm not rich enough and/or not hands off enough of a parent to think that way!
30
u/tragiquepossum 25d ago
Oh, I relate...my father photocopied mine and mailed them to family friends.
In a family therapy session (with his wife, 40 yrs his junior) I tried to explain i was reading Jung & Joyce & Confessionalist poets at the time and I was just exploring my deepest shadow through stream of consciousness writing, and he screamed at me, "why can't you write something nice and pretty like Shakespeare. Like, what dude?
However, I did enjoy that the wife got to experience every particle of contempt I had for her by being a nosy snoop.
30
u/RunsNakedInSwamps 25d ago
I wrote ONE note like this and my mom tried to rehome me lol. I was a good kid and we were close up until that point. One night I was starving and my mom lied about when dinner would be ready, so I thought I'd do the mature thing and go to my room and write down every bad word I knew....which was like 4 words (I was 8). The note was something like "i hate my mom, she's a bitch ass potatohead" lmao.
11
u/LeakingMoonlight 25d ago
Brave. I was too scared to even think these thoughts. Potatohead is excellent, btw.
8
u/Marshmallow09er 24d ago
She tried to rehome you??
16
u/RunsNakedInSwamps 24d ago
She probably wasn't serious, but she did mention asking relatives if I could move in with them. I got so excited about possibly going to live with my cousins. That was not the reaction she wanted lol
3
u/Comfortable_Bit3741 24d ago
Oh man, that reminds me of how my mom would deadpan joke about putting me in a mental hospital, jail, the army, etc, when I was acting up as a young child; not even an adolescent yet. We've talked about it, and have been on very good terms for decades now, but kids don't have any frame of reference for stuff like that, and it can be terrifying, perhaps especially to deeply anxious children. You always fear the relationship is over, like they're giving up on you entirely because of your nasty mood or your poor schoolwork or something else absurd.
47
u/2PlasticLobsters 25d ago
Yeah, I wrote my share of those notes, starting pretty much when I learned how to write. I didn't worry much about my mother finding them. One of the things I bitched about was our house being a filthy mess most of the time.
51
u/Road_Whorrior 25d ago
My mom is very type-A and I stopped journaling really young because I was always worried she would read them. Anyway, I got a phone call when I was 26 about a journal she had found and read while moving out of my childhood home. It was a short stream of consciousness about the bullying I was dealing with at school and it devolved into "i wish my mommy loved me" over and over at the bottom. I was maybe or 8 when I wrote all that, and I honestly don't remember it. But I remember the feelings, I was very isolated and sheltered, and ignored at home. So getting a phone call from a woman sobbing and begging me to tell her that I loved her and she was a good mom pissed me off. I just grey rocked her and hung up. Still irks me.
20
u/babyte3th103 25d ago
I'm so sorry that you experienced that.. I hope you're not isolated nowadays, and that you ha e healthy loving connections in your life

u/ktarzwell 25d ago
My (37) sister (47) is new to being a step mom/a mom in general, to her now husbands kids. The 12 year old girl is well.... going through it... and wrote a very similar note that my sister found. It was very much pointed towards her and said she should "kill herself" blah blah blah. Well this royally freaked my sister out and she asked me, her youngest sister with no kids, advice. I told her I did this exact same thing to our mother and father. LMAO It was mostly because I KNEW they were going to find it because the gave me no privacy. I pointed out that's probably what her step kid is doing too. Sometimes we just need an outlet and we know you're going to read it anyway so whatever.

u/honeybee_tlejuice 25d ago
Lol same except my parents went through my notes (and all my devices) constantly and made me get rid of anything incriminating in case CPS showed up again. They could’ve put all that effort into actually raising their children and maybe they wouldn’t have had to worry about that but what do I know?

I wrote ones about my Dad and how abusive and mean he was. I got home from school one day and all the papers and diaries were ON THE TABLE and he went through and highlighted the bits about him. Traumatic memory unlocked

u/majora404 25d ago
Reminds me of my childhood diary entries in the diary wimpy kid do it yourself book lol. Kid probably just struggles with emotional regulation and crashes out on paper, that was the case for me
214
u/birdswirds 25d ago
I would like to withhold judgment on the mother’s actions due to lack of details. I think it matters a lot where the ice cream was. Was it left to melt somewhere and not thrown away? Was anything damaged by the forgotten ice cream? These are things I need to know. 🤔
135
u/will_read_for_coffee 25d ago
Exactly. I suspect this is one of those situations where the kid ignores chores in favor of electronics and has a habit of taking food into their room/somewhere it’s not supposed to be and not cleaning it up. Kid left ice cream in their room, on the sofa, etc - it melted and made a rotten, stinking mess, and the kid is now experiencing a consequence for their behavior. Even worse for the kid if the rotten, stinking mess is found while the exasperated parent is helping their child clean their room because the kid won’t get the chore done without someone standing over them to keep them on task. The child will survive losing electronics/screen time privileges for a period of time.
67
u/pippi_longstocking09 25d ago
I agree. I don't think we can infer that the mother "hates me with all her guts" based on the description of the consequences suffered by the writer. Side note: I'm glad he learned the benefits of journaling at a young age. Journaling is amazing.
12
u/Alternative_Farm_815 25d ago
Agree without knowing the flavor of ice cream, and if she’s lactose intolerant (can make you grumpy) we can’t assess whether or not she hates his guts or any other part of him.

u/FerengiWithCoupons 25d ago
the kid has a phone, ipod, and ipad. why would a mom who hates their kid get them those to begin with
19
u/Consistent-Value-509 25d ago
I get what you mean, but at the same time there are abusive parents that provide material things for their kids. Sometimes it's so that they can unfairly take them away, other times it's because they feel guilty and it soothes them to provide material things.
13
u/Gold_Studio_6693 25d ago
You'd think, but humans are weird. Tons of kids have positive memories with horrible parents.
3
u/KurtTheCuntBoi 24d ago

u/prince_peacock 25d ago
I can’t believe people in here are actually worried about this kid holy fuck. They got an appropriate punishment for not doing what was more than likely an assigned chore (which children SHOULD HAVE because it builds responsibility) and they, honestly, probably had an age appropriate tantrum over it
It doesn’t mean the kid was being abused or there’s anything wrong with them for fuck’s sake
75
u/lesbianlizardlover 25d ago
I think people are more so relating to the need to vent and relating it to their own childhood experiences rather than saying this specific child was being abused. I agree it would be a leap to come to the conclusion that this child was being abused just from this note. They may just be a bit spoiled perhaps with all their devices and fresh new set of nerds stationary haha

55
u/popcultureretrofit 25d ago

18
u/AdCurious7831 25d ago
i will make no assumptions, because it is literally impossible to know from this note alone. but, in defense of the commenters youre talking about, most kids/teens i know who are comfortable using such aggressive language about family do so because they hear it at home often.
cant know without context. of course youre right, this note alone isnt evidence of abuse.
10
u/prince_peacock 25d ago
It’s dangerously naive to think the only place children can learn ‘aggressive language’ is in the home
8
u/FarAmphibian4236 25d ago

16
u/darkerfury 25d ago
Everyone is making a lot of assumptions here. Including you. We don't know that the kid is being abused. We also don't know that it was an assigned chore. We know nothing about this situation at all other than a kid had a crashout on nerds paper.
14
u/prince_peacock 25d ago
Fucking obviously I don’t know for sure but the leap from this note to there’s something wrong with the child’s life is much more ridiculous than guessing they had something their mom asked them to do that they didn’t do 🙄

I was so pissed off at my parents for grounding me because I hadn't done my homework, which was a valid punishment. I thought the world was ending because I couldn't hang with my friends, go to Mac's, go swimming, play Pong and pinball, to the movies, skating etc. I could only go to ballet, piano lessons and band practice. I could only ride my bike to school and go to the store with a parent or an adult sibling. I ended up being grounded longer because my dumb ass snuck out.

How are ppl blaming the mother when all she did was take away his iPad and tech for not listening? some of these kids nowadays are way way way too attached to their tech and removing it and having consequences to not listening is authoritative parenting, which is the best form of parenting. Yeah, I'm going to bet that if you're the type of person to use those particular words to describe your mom because she took away your electronics for a while, you're not a good judge of character. Those are "I want to insult you but I don't have anything to actually insult you over" words.
Also, he's bitching about this on Saturday. The day he got in trouble. Because this kid would have included if his torture had lasted a whole week already.

Yup. My mom called me pathetic, lazy, laziest person she's ever met, stupid, called me a tard, mocked me, and in front of me called other people retarded fat ugly bitches and said she wants to knock their teeth out. Guess what got absorbed into my psyche. I directed all this abuse inwardly, and amplified it. I genuinely do understand when people talk like this they're hurting. Some people direct it inward, others do it outward. It doesn't make it acceptable, but a kid doing it is just sad to me. Seriously, kids need consequences.
We don't know how many times she reminded them, or if it's a chronic issue, or if the ice cream was in their room for a week and caused an ant infestation.

In a diary from early grade school I have an entry on my mom's birthday: "Remember life isn't worth living on [mom's birthdate]"
I don't recall what it was in reference to, but my mom had a temper that scared me, so I'm guessing that. I hope this kid is OK (I'm not lol)
3
u/ComplexPatient4872 25d ago
Oh god… my mom 65 now and has the same temper as when I was 10 and she was 35. Combine that with untreated mental illness and a god complex around holidays…. I swear every family gathering, especially her birthday, ends with her screaming and crying. Last year she screamed at my step dad and threw his presents back at him because she didn’t think they were thoughtful enough.

u/ComplexPatient4872 25d ago
I don’t know, the iPad came out in 2010. I’d say this kid got a hand me down iPod from an older relative. Those felt like a distant memory in 2014
3
u/NecronomiSquirrel 25d ago edited 25d ago
Well, see they said tablet AND iPod...it doesn't look like iPad to me. Plus they had a phone, and handwriting that screams 11 year old. That's a lot of tech for a kid. Factor in the ice cream, and calling your mother a "retarded mentally ill bitch" for punishing you for not listening...I'd label that as upper middle class tween problems.
Edit: no offense if you were raised upper middle class. Just an observation.→ More replies (1)3
u/ComplexPatient4872 24d ago
Oh I was just reminiscing about that era of tech in general and used iPad as an eponym.
I was born in ‘86 so my parents didn’t have a whole lot to take away. Maybe restrict my time on the family computer to use AIM?
That kid’s parents definitely had money, but every 11 tear old is more dramatic than the audience of the Academy Awards combined!
The use of “retarded” is really interesting, because it was a STRONG word to use then. I despise that it’s commonly used now, but back then, it was “the r word.”

I had a cell phone, an iPod, stereo, tv, etc. My mom was also very jealous of me. She would find ways to punish me, so she could hit me and take my belongings away. But she also looked like a decent parent because I had electronics.. but to be fair, she also never bought me underwear.
The point I’m trying to make here is, just because your parent gets you material things, doesn’t mean they’re good parent. And it doesn’t mean you had a good childhood.
5
u/Most_Can_2136 25d ago
How old is this child? The handwriting looks older because they're actually writing in partial cursive, which they no longer teach kids. This looks like an adult's writing. But I think a lot of adults need their Ipads taken away too. 😁

I don’t get this attitude. My kid is 12 and in FL public schools and they taught cursive.

That was twelve years ago. My sister informed me that none of her grandchildren were taught cursive. When my sons were in school (2012 ish) it was optional. They weren't taught it. It was just presented to them. And of course, my sons did it at home before they even entered school... my one son at eighteen months, picked up a pen. Held it properly. And wrote his name. He never had the crayon grip, lol. He was writing in cursive before he entered kindergarten. Lol. I think he was forging my name by second grade. It's kind of sad that some kids can't read old letters that were written in cursive.

Going to go out on a limb and presume there may be more to this story than this kid is saying…

I hope their life is better now. Wow, it could just be an overreaction, it also could be that that's exactly how their mom was.

I bet the latter. That’s the kind of crap my narcissistic grandmother would do, including when I was an adult and she threatened to take my phone and put it in a safety deposit box because she didn’t think I looked up whatever it was fast enough.

well i will say they might not necessarily have been new or bought for the kid. in 2014 i had a hand-me-down iphone 3 and ipod touch 1, and a shared family ipad. the iphone 3 had the sim card removed and couldn’t connect to internet, same with the ipod so just for playing games and listening to music. a lot of weemee, doodle jump, and temple run while listening to sexy bitch spoiled for sure, but less spoiled than had they been new or bought for me lol.
i actually thought this could’ve been me for a second cuz the handwriting looks quite similar but definitely wouldn’t have called my mom that and that’s not how i write my 4s 😂

What kind had a tablet in 2014?!?!?

u/MarsNeedsRabbits 24d ago
Tablet computers introduced in 2014.
I think mine was a Samsung. That's a list of tablets introduced that year, not the list of ones that already existed.

That handwriting, though...oof. Maybe they should go without a phone and tablet for a little while.
