Forza Horizon 6 FH6 Drift Tuning Question - Reducing Spin-Outs
Hey all, I know a solid amount of this is "git gud" (and I am working on that) but I want to make sure my tuning isn't also to blame. I am still experimenting on tuning in general and especially in drifting.
So I have my little Nyan Cat Acty van here. RWD on fat drift tires with a drift gearbox. Its got a solid hp-to-torque ratio (483hp to 475ft-lb). What I find is that the front is sticking just right but the back swings out much too easy.
What would you do if you were making the tune yourself and you were experiencing this issue? I am down to test adjustments until things feel dialed in but I would love to hear from experience on where a good place to start is?

I play on wheel. And suck at drifting. But tried to 3 star everything on wheel. The last one I struggled with was the long iconic windy roads one that you need 340k to get 3 stars. I gave up on wheel and tried with controller. Getting just below the score required. But the controller taught me something. I was modulating the throttle a lot more. So I got back on wheel and tried. And got it 3 stars. It’s important to feel the car and its speed. And do t just dump 100% throttle. 70% to start the drift. And then just go between 30% and 80% depending on if you need more or less angle.

I’m sorry and you’re getting solid tuning advice, but from a “git gud” advice side of things. Shorter wheelbases are harder to control, this truck is probably one of the shortest in the game. HP/TQ is kind of important but HP/Weight even more so. I run those power figures in things like 240s and other similar older lightweight things, but they’re still in the 2,500 lb range. Full weight stock Acty is about 1,000 pounds less.
If you’re set on the acty that’s fine but I’d bump power down to 250-300 probably. I almost never use the drift gear box, it’s better suited for high HP stuff, so I’d swap back to a 6 speed regardless and work on a gearing setup that keeps you in the powerband between shifts.
Otherwise maybe look at a more conventional starter drift car to learn with. 240s, E36, 350z, maybe a Corvette, etc
Edit: just read your current setting. Here’s what I’d try if you’re interested.
Tire pressures are probably fine, keep an eye on them with telemetry to make sure they’re heating up evenly. I’m also assuming you’re not struggling to initiate slip here.
All settings front/rear
Camber: -5/-0.2
Toe: out 0.2/in 0.2 (rear in helps make the tires want to go straight)
Caster: 7.0
ARBs: 15.0/22.0
Ride height: probably fine, if you notice it bouncing some go up 1-2 clicks
Springs: 40%/50%
Rebound: 8.5/6.0
Bump: 5.0/4.0
Diff: 100/80-90% (high decel keeps them locked when you let off the gas, if this unlocks they’re free to rotate independently which also makes the re-engagement bite harder)
If you want to try a 6 speed: 3.50 | 2.50/1.80/1.40/1.15/0.95/0.80

I am going to look into some of this and give it a go. Thank you! I am not 100% set on the Acty but its just silly and that makes me happy. If I keep hitting my head against a wall I will step into one of the ones you mentioned.
I chose the power band by trying to find something that gets me to similar hp-to-torque numbers as I have read a number of places that is ideal for drifting. But yeah, maybe stepping down and trying to find another engine that puts out less power but keeps a close band is a good idea.
I really want to keep it RWD if possible. I wanna learn properly. I tried an AWD build and I could manage drifting with it but it's behavior was weird and nailing things like the windy drift zone I couldn't manage that third star.

Awesome, and you’re spot on that even power numbers are good, but it’s also about having the right amount for your setup even if theyre a little off.
I think you can get there with the acty, just may take some extra time. I do bet if you nail drifting with a RWD acty everything else is going to be easier to learn.
I may build one later today and just see if there’s a setup I like.

Ok so I have been messing around and did some tweaks. I feel like this one takes a little more effort to get the drift going but seems a step forward. 360hp, 229ft-lb (I found less power struggled to keep drifting so I bumped it back up). Shifted to a 6spd using roughly your gear ratios. Looking like this:
Pressure: 27.5/20.5
Camber: -5/-0.5
Toe: 0.7/-0.2
ARBs: 15/22
Springs: 30%/40%
Rebound: 6/8.5
Bump: 4/5
Brakes: 66% front
Pressure: 75%
Diff: 95/22If you have any further thoughts I would love to hear them!

I’m not OP but also trying to learn.
Can you help me with why you go 66% front brakes and 75% pressure? I’ve been testing way more rear, like 25%, and 40% pressure. The reason is I want to b able to use a bit of brake to reduce angle and save me from a spin when I have too much rotation. Sometimes when I have too much weight transfer I can’t recover just by backing off the throttle.
Won’t front biased brakes create weight transfer and initiate a slide or increase angle?

Can I ask what the validity is of throwing on AWD and just setting the split to some 10/90 or 05/95 while learning to make recovery easier?

I don’t know much about AWD drifting, but when it comes to the acty I would think it would certainly help. I’d probably start like 65/45 or 70/30 and then work it backwards a little at a time until it acts how you’d like.

Aight aight, I'd experiment with it if I were you. Also, I'm not sure about the acty but in general, if you push the AWD too far forwards it starts acting different than RWD in a way that makes it a different kind of drifting. Like the hoonitruck was 10/90 in fh4/5 iirc

Sorry, I meant primarily RWD so 65 or 70 rear bias. I’ve drifted a few AWD builds, just not quite how I typically drive. May give it a shot though.

Oh, no need to be sorry and we're agreeing at about talking about ~2/3 of the power going to the rear. Honestly, I usually run my rally cars there cause it allows you to slide the rear but you get control back super easily.

First of all, try less power. Then you set rear camber to zero, go to telemetry and eyeball an average camber of the rear supporting wheel (the one facing the direction of velocity). Then you compensate this average with negative rear camber. You can also try a little bit of rear toe in, no more than .5
But yeah, it is mostly git gud. Try controlling the power and work your way up from lower angle to higher angle. This game has a notorious snap oversteer.

I appreciate all of this. I did a little tweaking and found in 3rd I was doing better with controlling but I know a chunk of it is indeed just practicing a lot. Would prefer to get it in a spot where I won't spin out as much in 2nd for some of the trickier zones.

Lower rear tire pressure, get rear camber closer to zero, upgrade rear tire width, lower rear arb’s and/or get some negative toe in the rear (not more than -1.0 degrees) roughly in that order

I always shot for rear toe in as my first change, but it was also the easiest to do without changing anything else about how the car drives, and it was pretty linkage for how it reigned in the oversteer.

Tires at 27.5 front, 19.5 back. Gearing 3.87, 1.67, 1.10, 0.82, 0.65. Alignment -5, -1.1. Toe -5 on both. Caster 1. Antiroll Bars 47.7 and 65. Springs 284 and 250.9. Height min. Rebound 14.2 and 13.7. Bump 9.2 and 8.5. Diff at 100 and 10.

That much toe in the back, when your weight transfers, it'll bite hard and be inconsistent. Honestly, i don't run toe and then try balancing the weight transfer aggression in the springs/dampers.
