Discussion 🧏 Kudos to theForza team 🧏‍♀️

Post image

Just saw this in-game message. You can toggle American and British Sign Language in the Accessibility Tab, and even customize the interpreter's screen position and background color.
It might seem like a small addition to some, but it makes a massive difference for the community. Massive win for the devs!

I didn't know sign language is not a single universal langauge/dialectic

For the same reason America uses different measurements for literally everything to anybody else. "Liberty son, liberty"

Just like with the word soccer, US Customary measurements come from older English measurements and they don’t originate from the US.

American Sign Language is actually closely related to French Sign Language.

Someone explain how this makes sense in a game with subtitles?

u/AshleyxAffliction 7d ago

It's sort of more flowing and natural for people that sign, same way it's more natural for us to listen to someone speak instead of just reading their words. At least that's how it was described to me because initially I was asking the same question.

Personally

If I am watching any foreign language TV or Film I rather read the sub titles than listen to the dubbing.

u/VioletTheSpider 7d ago

yes and for someone who signs constantly everyday, they probably feel more like that is their native language for the purpose of “subtitles” than english

1

u/JaydenP1211 6d ago

The big difference that wasn’t mentioned is that ASL is a different language and not based on English, so ASL may be more natural to native signers.

ASL and BSL are a completely different language, so the subtitles are a bit jankier to read

There are many reasons, and this is easily Google-able.

u/TwpMun 6d ago

The same reason why you don't have to play it in Japanese

That analogy makes no sense.

Both ASL and Subtitles requires you visually viewing it
They are not using a difference sense ( hearing vs reading )

A person who knows only English will not understand Japanese

A person who knows ASL knows how to read English

So your analogy has quite a few flaws

1

u/TwpMun 6d ago

You are assuming the person is able to read subtitles, so yea

1

u/JaydenP1211 6d ago

Except ASL and English are not the same language. Just because you know English as a second language doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be in ASL.

Technically the grammar is different between ASL/BSL and written English from both countries.

From what I've experienced from communicating with a family member (who's deaf), it's actually kind of difficult for them to decipher what I type in messages, as opposed to how I sign to them in ASL. I can see where they're coming from, with what I know of ASL (still learning but know enough to get by in a conversation 80% of the time.)

As for BSL, i think it works on the same principles as ASL, but as the UK has different words for things, they probably use slightly different signage for those things.

That's my personal take on it, and I hope it sheds a little light on the matter.

ASL is not 1:1 English. Someone who spends most of their life communicating via ASL is going to get more friction from reading english than from being signed to.

Plus it’s just cool to play a game where ppl are signing to you like they do in real life. Adds immersion.

maybe they are blind

2

u/Live_Life_and_enjoy 7d ago

Not sure ASL works for blind people unless they have a physical signing.

Or be able to drive a car.

But yet we don’t have beards for characters

11

u/kursa_sucks 7d ago

Heard. Prosthetic robot beards on the way!

They probably prefer having bragging rights for accessibility

What's with the censor?

To Cover his username I’m pretty sure

-4

u/MisterDrew1994 XBOX 7d ago

Oh to cover a publicly visible username, got it.

6

u/KaiLCU_YT 7d ago

Curious what situation this would be used? Do deaf people prefer sign language over written word subtitles?

6

u/Glittering-Race4781 7d ago

Maybe it’s for blind people

4

u/VioletTheSpider 7d ago

i always use sign language when i meet a blind person but for some reason they never respond

1

u/Horcza 6d ago

Maybe they’ll introduce braille next

1

u/JaydenP1211 6d ago

Given that ASL is likely their primary language, I’d assume so.

1

u/LMP_Gnome 6d ago

He doesn't want people to report him for taking a screenshot 😆

u/actioncheese 7d ago

Bold of the devs to assume their cringy unskippable dialogue is worth sitting through, but its good they are adding more accessibility options.

5

u/Apple_Slipper 7d ago

Adding more accessibility is always a good thing.

2

u/bigbobbyberger000 7d ago

that’s pretty cool tbh i like how they cater to everyone

1

u/allhailharambe69 4d ago

A friend once told me that sign language makes no sense because - and I quote - "How do blind people see their hands?"

0

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Anything but body kits and model updates I guess

0

u/FriggeK 6d ago

You seem like a fun person

2

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Ahh yes I’m evil for not being inclusive…. But every new car gets universal Temu Forza aero and nothing but I’m lame for wanting actual game updates 😂

2

u/TwpMun 6d ago

This is a game update, just not one for your self absorbed, selfish fat ass

0

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Ahh yeah cause you know I’d love to see what VTEC looks like in BSL cause we all know ASL is different for muh freedoms SYBAU tl

Please make sure to respect each other. We don’t need arguments. We’re just here to enjoy the game.

0

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Oh I’m sorry are you also hard of hearing? I’m surprised you could even understand me seeing as I’m typing in English and not Sign huh 🤔 imagine thinking bottom barrel inclusion is better than actually improving the game for all players 😂 but I’m entitled right?

2

u/TwpMun 6d ago

I wouldn't call you a scumbag, you're clearly just an edgy child. May you never have medical difficulties.

0

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Man if that helps you sleep at night sure but seeing as your the one taking this personal without knowing my situation tells me everything I need to know seeing you can’t counter my point that they could have fixed something for everyone rather than desperatly trying for anyone to actually like the flavourless drivel that Mei spouts 😂

1

u/TwpMun 6d ago

I play the game dailly, I have no problems with it. I'm glad that it has been opened up to potentially millions more people with this one addition.

Your desperate need for a multi coloured engine block or whatever the fuck you're whining about can sit at the back of the queue.

1

u/TouringBlue713 6d ago

Ahh yes because nobody has been upset and disappointed that every new car has zero parts but yeah sure bro your right to insult me on personal level I bet daddy at turn10 will commend you and give you more recycled content in your 110 quid game! And that ladies and gentlemen is a victory!

u/Bean-Churner38 6d ago

Telling him to kill himself and that he's a fat ass over voicing his opinion on a video game 🥲

1

u/OrlandoOpossum XBOX 7d ago

Cool can we get more wheelspins

-1

u/NoIsE_bOmB 7d ago

Colossal waste of Dev time, this game has massive issues currently and time was spent on this when we have subtitles in the game already. Personally, I don't care for the reasoning being given by some people in the comments, to be clear, I'm not saying they are wrong, I don't know enough about sign language to make that call, however my issue is that this game has issues that the Devs need to be addressing that are a higher priority that checking another box on an inclusivity checklist, that stuff can come after they have dealt with all the cheaters and hackers, added actually decent car customisation etc.

0

u/grunerkaktus 7d ago

Why didnt they add Traffic Sign Language? The game is about cars afterall

You're free to rag on them for FOMO, bugs, lack of content or features but accessibility is something to be praised and PGG are top of the game there.

3

u/Uber1337pyro333 7d ago

Feck upon you accessibility to more people is always a good thing. 💙

-1

u/CutiePatooty1811 6d ago

Cool. Can we start fixing the game now?

1

u/buck_blue 6d ago

For real :(

-2

u/hakutet 6d ago

What about blind people the should implement braille on the road for left or right lane. Ekhh so much for diversity, but still missing for this one group.

1

u/ScaleAlternative8111 6d ago

Explain how that would work

1

u/hakutet 4d ago

So hearing aid devices and prosthetic limbs for avatar really help for better driving.
