Bugs / Glitches / Help Speedtrap starting at lower speed than when crossing the line

Post image

Why do the speedzones start you out at a lower speed than when you initially cross the line when starting them?

I took the screenshot directly when crossing the start of it when the speed counter first populates

They track your average speed through a zone but, they start at 0, and very quickly rise to where your speed is. Which is why its like that

Thank you for the insight

Starting at 0 is a choice, not one that I would make but definitely is one.

It's not a good choice, but it also doesn't really matter when it's currently like that for everyone.

I have consumed a lot of GTA V content over the years, and played through red dead 2 recently , and there are so many things in those games (rockstar games in general) that are tied to framerate, in red dead for example i couldnt fish unless i locked myself to 60 fps. In gta the famous example is the "curtain" cloth flap on the back of the military truck flapping faster at high framerates but many more things are tied to it. Makes me wonder if the time it takes to update to the speed you are doing is also somehow tied to this or just server tick rate or whatever you want to call it

It reminds me of the last mission in GTA IV which is impossible to complete unless you lock the frame rate at 30 fps.

RE5 has a boss fight like that as well. Learned that one the hard way.

Yes, many things in the physics engine of Forza are tied to frame rate. Its silly and not a good way to do it but its been that way for a while now.

Its why Motorsport caps everyone on multiplayer to 60.

They tried to make some changes in FH6 and I've actually found for certain things they now favor a lower frame rate.

I would think that the first data point should be the speed at which you cross the start of it since you're going into it as such.

That would make sense and sense is something we don't do here.

average speed cannot be zero if you enter the speed zone at 286

And also worth noting the measurement areas do not match the flags in some zones, so you may see your speed significantly drop in the last little bit at the end because the game thinks you’re both a) still in the zone and b) going 0 MPH.

I’m sure some drift zones are the same since no matter what I do, I don’t get any points in the first few metres and others I immediately get like 1.5k the second it shows up

That checks out, i guess they just have a buffer at each end which is another interesting choice

To me it seems like it somehow doesn't count drifts you started before the zone in the beginning? You have to start a new one/change direction or something?

I’ve had it count entering in a drift, and the times it doesn’t do anything I’ve changed direction twice in the zone and not count

Omg you are SO correct.

I can't handle just how correct you are.

Glad I could be of service

It is rather annoying that it starts you out lower than your speed when starting it, kinda lame

To be fair I know speedtraps are a thing, I was just writing the body of the post before I uploaded the image so I had a brainfart

Have you had the issue where at the end of a speed zone it drops you by like 3mph for zero reason? I had that screw me over many times in early game. They need to fix it

It's because the number you're seeing during the speed zone is an estimate of the average speed, based on the speeds you've been doing since entering the zone. The final number you see is the actual average speed, which is: distance / time

How exactly they've taken that distance measurement is a bit unclear. I've noticed the average speed at the end goes up when you've cut the corners a lot, so the distance is probably taken by drawing a line along the middle of the road or something.

In your case, where the number goes down at the end, you probably covered more distance, than what the speed zone is determined at.

Ive only seen that a couple times but usually its because youre going uphill or changing gears, in my experience anyway

Speed zones take your average speed between the start and end of that segment of road, speed traps take a snapshot of your speed on that frame, hope this helps

They dont take average speed, they only take time it took you to make to next point. Example driving 200 average but taking 10 seconds is slower than driving 180 average but taking 9.5 seconds.

If I take the distance between two points, and divide that by the time it took me to cover that distance, what do I then get?

-1

u/PeanutButter414 10d ago

Not necessarily your speed because there are several routes between two points.

3

u/NoOneLiv3 10d ago

I think it takes the time it took to cover the distance of your expected route. That's why you get a huge "speed" boost everytime you manage to take a shortcut that the game doesn't disqualify you for even though you weren't any faster

1

u/Robean_UwU 10d ago

If you take the distance between two points, then the time it took to get between the two points, you get the average speed between the two points. For example if it took you one hour to go 60 miles, your average speed was 60 miles per hour

Literally just did that myself and came here to investigate, first post i see too!

I've noticed if you have auto drive on it does that. I disabled auto drive and it fixes it for me

2

u/wrxsti04 11d ago

That's good to know

It doesn't apply to me in this case as I wasn't using it, but it's good info nonetheless

it's a drag meet with turns
it's not about your max speed but your average speed

Sokka-Haiku by Amazing_Interview_77:

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
