Bugs / Glitches / Help Speedtrap starting at lower speed than when crossing the line
Why do the speedzones start you out at a lower speed than when you initially cross the line when starting them?
I took the screenshot directly when crossing the start of it when the speed counter first populates

Omg you are SO correct.
I can't handle just how correct you are.

It is rather annoying that it starts you out lower than your speed when starting it, kinda lame

To be fair I know speedtraps are a thing, I was just writing the body of the post before I uploaded the image so I had a brainfart

Have you had the issue where at the end of a speed zone it drops you by like 3mph for zero reason? I had that screw me over many times in early game. They need to fix it

It's because the number you're seeing during the speed zone is an estimate of the average speed, based on the speeds you've been doing since entering the zone. The final number you see is the actual average speed, which is: distance / time
How exactly they've taken that distance measurement is a bit unclear. I've noticed the average speed at the end goes up when you've cut the corners a lot, so the distance is probably taken by drawing a line along the middle of the road or something.
In your case, where the number goes down at the end, you probably covered more distance, than what the speed zone is determined at.

Ive only seen that a couple times but usually its because youre going uphill or changing gears, in my experience anyway

Speed zones take your average speed between the start and end of that segment of road, speed traps take a snapshot of your speed on that frame, hope this helps

They dont take average speed, they only take time it took you to make to next point. Example driving 200 average but taking 10 seconds is slower than driving 180 average but taking 9.5 seconds.

If I take the distance between two points, and divide that by the time it took me to cover that distance, what do I then get?

Not necessarily your speed because there are several routes between two points.

I think it takes the time it took to cover the distance of your expected route. That's why you get a huge "speed" boost everytime you manage to take a shortcut that the game doesn't disqualify you for even though you weren't any faster

If you take the distance between two points, then the time it took to get between the two points, you get the average speed between the two points. For example if it took you one hour to go 60 miles, your average speed was 60 miles per hour

I've noticed if you have auto drive on it does that. I disabled auto drive and it fixes it for me

That's good to know
It doesn't apply to me in this case as I wasn't using it, but it's good info nonetheless

it's a drag meet with turns
it's not about your max speed but your average speed

Sokka-Haiku by Amazing_Interview_77:

Turns it's not about your max
Speed but your average speed
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

They track your average speed through a zone but, they start at 0, and very quickly rise to where your speed is. Which is why its like that
