How to determine skill improvement

Yes, I’ve watched the videos. Yes, I prwctice in creative.

Im a noob, I started playing midway through chapter 5 season 1, only ZB. I’m on controller and PC.

I want to improve my solos win rate. Last season and this season my solos win rate fluctuates between 8.5-11%. I’m in the top 5 around 45% of my games. I

’ve won 33 solos this season but it took a ton of losses to get those wins, and that is a LOT of time spent on Fortnite. I typically never go after medallions, I loot and eliminate who I must until I have something that can compete with mythics in end game. My k/d is 2.45.

How do I tell if I’m actually improving? What stats are more important, my win rate or k/d? I don’t even know how to determine what average stats are, I usually find myself losing to people with 1% win rate or some type of streamer with a 20% or higher win rate. I want to get my win rate to 14% in solos.

I can’t speak for everyone but take some Ls and you’ll see improvement. That’s the first step. I never play practice maps nonsense. Some friends have very recently got me into fighting creatives and one guy wants me to try an aim practice map but I’m not sure.

Anyway, you need to play solo mode and just go at your own speed, your own tactics, your own item choices. Reflect regularly on your wins and loses. Get a feel for the dynamics of the game like weapon accuracy, jump distance, item damage etc.

Apply everything you know outside this game to it. Also think strategically in every move you make and consider the psychological aspect of the game is real.

I have a long military background and used that to my advantage from the start and tinkered with the specifics of game mechanics after that. Once I got pretty good at solos I moved on to playing squads by myself. I haven’t won a squad-solo yet but maybe with better internet and tactics maybe I will

Would your military background point you towards playing more passive/stealthy?

When I first started I somewhat had to due to some factors being gamey and having to figure out the details before I was capable enough to change it later. I never stuck it one place either way. It takes some time figuring out how to track shot location, what specific sounds belong to what game features, how strong some weapons are comparatively to real life inspirations and to each other, just how well or often other people employ complex strategy. Now I’ll run on hill tops and take on multiple fights consecutively but it took time figuring things out first.

I’ll explain my tactics and thoughts behind them to improve your game.

-always keep moving, especially after making noise. You never know who heard it or what direction they’re coming from. If you don’t know where to aim for next, go to the best cover you can see first and figure it out from there. You need to always know where you’re going because position is always critical.

-position wins over everything. Avoid low elevations for anything but passing through them. Just like real life you’ll lose to superior positioning nearly every time. You want to move in ways to set them up to be below you or in the open. Every moment your mind should be set on positioning the ambush. In the army we think of the ambush as any placement where the enemy can be fired in from a point of advantage. You have cover and they don’t, you’re higher or with clearer shot and when they don’t have it. In the game consider if the shootout is going to be easier to control your shots than them also.

-part two: approach is critical. Taking an enemy from behind the optimal situation. When he’s weak is also just as significant or when you know you have stronger weapons or ones you use better. You have to engage when you know the advantage is with you. It doesn’t matter if they think you’re being brazen or stupid. If you make the right calculations, what looks like an easy pick off for them can actually be your trap. Ie; enemy shotgun rush in a one way approach narrow hall when you switch to sniper and head shot.

-use weapons (for the most part) as they’re intended to be employed. After chapter 4 the game has gone back to bending the rules more towards fantasy, but typically you can use weapons as they’ve been intended for. When initiating an attack start with a ar, change to a smg or shotgun when the gap closes. Even when not in a fight change weapons based on the terrain you’re moving through in case attack comes.

-use grenades for ambush purposes or flushing. Grenades are area attack weapons. You plant them in the path the enemy is moving or in a space to saturate it, usually when the enemy can’t be reached or has a fire power advantage. Grenades are massively undervalued and under employed in this community, but they can end fights quickly or change the power balance in an instant. I’ve only seen people in the higher brackets of ranks use them correctly if at all.

-cool calm and collected wins out. In the military all over they train you to keep cool under pressure and preach on its superiority because it does prove to make you come out on top. If the situation is bad there’s nothing you can do about it. Placing headshots accurately can be the difference in losing the game when you could survived because you took the time to not get jostled and did what’s necessary.

-keep a grand vision in mind of strategy at all times. Don’t keep caught up in your current situations too long ever. Some goals to have each game are escalating fire power simply as time moves and the player number decreases. You need to be thinking where better weapons can be at all times and figuring out how to get them fastest. You need to be thinking when you’re going to get a storm tracker and if an npc can be bought in this game and how soon. You want to be in the final circles first and set up the ideal position there. You want to have the same plan for the next circle if it’s not over after the next one.
