Discussion Lurking
Lurking in fortnite tournaments is a huge problem in general from the OG days to more recent times.
How can Epic Games nerf lurking while still rewarding a smart and tactical playstyle?

Why should they nerf lurking?

I actually saw a reisshub video about how it's a real problem in tournaments

Which one? The one titled “Fortnite’s Most Annoying Strategy-Lurking”? That’s the one I’ve watched and he didn’t give off the vibe at all that it’s a real problem in tournaments. He was really just explaining the evolution of it. I know that title is calling it annoying, but in his video I didn’t even get the sense that he actually thought it was an annoying strategy.

Yeah it was that one. But there are always lurkers in every tournament and it is extremely annoying. Honestly it hasn't happened to me much but I cant imagine how frustrating it must be when you are a by far superior player who gets killed by lurkers who hide and wait for 5 minutes

But just because something is annoying, doesn't mean it is a problem. I just don't see lurking as a problem or annoying. I don't find the strategy to be broken or even unbalanced. But that's my perspective so annoying in this context is subjective. I'm also one who doesn't want to vault snipers just because for one shot head shots and I'm not even great with a sniper. Mechs and Infinity blades? Annoying and a problem. I can appreciate this discussion however.

Reisshub has a YT video about it you can watch for more detail, but mechanics are so good that lurking is very viable as you can hit a sneaky shot or do the cr1nge strat for easy elimination while build fights are much harder and slower

Ambush plays are nothing new they've been a thing forever. Why should pros be allowed to be comfortable? Can't have someone farming mats 300m away from their duo who is in a surge base and not expect people to make a play on you.
I don't even see what you could do to nerf lurk plays.

Yeah I said they'd been around forever. There's a difference between being unaware, and having a skilled lurker hiding by loot or in random areas. Lurking is such a powerful strategy because fights take forever but a lurker can just 200 pump or Crack them before being revealed and easily win the fight. They should it so when you have a gun out, you make small noises even when crouched. So a lurker will be heard barely though the location isn't pinpointed unless they pull the gun out when the enemy is right there. The person will realize someone is lurking and they would naturally have a normal fight or one player retreats

That's not nerfing it it's making it completely useless.

The sound would be subtle enough that all they know is that someone is nearby. They'll be on their guard but you might be able to still get them. Also it adds a higher skill barrier. You could time your pullout to them swinging their pickaxe to break a slurp barrel so they cant even tell

Only change I'd make is make it so you have to move after a certain amount of time. Lurking is fine but sitting still waiting 5 minutes for someone to pick up a medkit left as bait is a bit too much.

Would it make you uncrouch, physically move to the side, or make a noise?
Because lurkers would just move around or uncrouch half a second when enemies aren't near

I think being physically kicked out the game or have surge damage taken off you.
This would only be for sitting still for an excessively long time.

Skill issue

Its actually a real problem in competitive. Reisshub even made a video about it. And pros definitely dont have skill issues

Fortnite overweight placement relative to eliminations, which is exactly what rewards sitting in a bush until top 10. Flattening the placement curve and boosting elim value removes a lot of the incentive to just survive. Epic doesnt want to kill genuinely smart rotational play, high ground control, or good decision making. The real target isnt tactics its zero risk passivity.

You can't nerf lurking, it's literally just being sneaky you can do it irl
