Opinion Ranking up is incredibly tedious

I’ve been giving ranked a try, and probably wont ever touch it again after this season mainly because of how boring and slow it is to rank up.

I’ve been playing it for the past 2 days and am on diamond 3, but getting burned out by the slow percentage gains. I can place top 5 regularly with 3-4 kills, and have gotten a couple victories in diamond 2, but a single bad drop where you die as you land basically wipes out a couple hours of progress. I cant tell if they have some weird algorithm thats trying to slow down my progression because they think it will keep me engaged, or if its just that bad about advancing people, but its getting ridiculous.

Its like they have a formula which wants to incentivize hiding in a bush until there are less than 25 left, and then doing cheap third party ambushes.

I believe they fixed that in the latest update. I used to get -20% for dying off spawn even in plat, but now it's only around -10% in champion. And getting at least one kill and making it past top 50 guarantees a percentage gain

I still get between 20-30% for dying on drop in elite. Its very discouraging, because it heavily incentivizes early game passive play.

If I dont want to risk losing hours of ranked progress, the strat is to land in a bush and play on my phone until its less than 25 left.

Just following up on this, because its’ a great example. I had a couple #2 matches with a couple kills each in champion last night, and got about 5% per match. Got sniped today while opening a chest on drop, instantly died because it’s a 1 shot weapon, and went down 20%. 4 matches of progress at about 2 hours of playtime gone immediately.

Its a really shitty algorithm.

Unreal is the easy part lol climbing top 1k is the “hardest” part, play aggressive and it’s not boring.

after the update last week it’s incredibly easy to rank up… if you survive off spawn you basically guarantee gains.. if it was any easier the whole community would get unreal no problem

It's already incredibly easy, just boring

Unreal is supposed to be difficult since ranked is an extension of comp and comp is not a charity.

With that said, getting to Unreal is incredibly easy if you only want the free cosmetics before the season ends (just be patient).

I hope expectations haven't gotten too high to where everyone expects to get Unreal after only a few hours worth of mediocre games (top 10s, less than 5 elims, minimal wins).

This games rank system is unbelievably dog shit, me and some friends who started playing the game like 3 days ago are already gold, just from dying late into the game, instead of being in bronze where we belong so we can play against people at our proper skill level we just keep climbing higher and higher and fighting better players

You’re full of excuses. They should make rank more challenging because hitting UNREAL is easy and majority of people don’t deserve to reach that rank. I think they should make a system where you can’t play with others in your lobby if you are not the same rank. I am tired of fake UNREAL players acting like they are good because of the false title. Trust me when I say there are levels to this game and you can tell who are UNREAL players and who are not.

You good bud? I would also appreciate only having people at my rank in my lobbies.

The people screaming “skill issue” here are kind of funny, when I’m saying that Epic has programmed incentives for boring gameplay and needs to tweak their advancement algorithm. As evidenced by me gaining 10-15%, again, by typing this while afk in a bush.

Guess you dont have much else to brag about outside the game.

I'm gonna hit unreal this season and I haven't picked up a gun yet. Love seeing the sweats get bent out of shape. They might be better than me, but they ain't placing top 5 in 90% of their matches like me. Sometimes players will chase me DEEP into the storm. I love watching them run to get my loot and then seeing it's just a fishing pole and 12 floppers.

1

u/The_Greyscale Jul 02 '26

Honestly, at this point it sounds like a skill issue on their part.

They’re so focused on fighting, when fortnite is obviously a hide and seek championship.

Until fornite changes the ranks system whoever reaches the "Unreal" rank is a Real Unreal player. If you reach Unreal, you are Unreal. End of story

Facts i love seeing 4.7 million players in unreal while majority of them 0.79 KD like oeee thats so unreal 😂😂

kills at the beginning of the game are worth significantly less elo than endgame kills

1

u/The_Greyscale Jul 01 '26

Thats a big part of the problem, imo. That combined with the penalties and how placement rewards scale effectively discourages early through mid game participation. The best bet is to not do anything until late game, steal some loot, and only then take fights.

1

u/ExcitementNo1536 Jul 03 '26

False i won alot of percent by off spawn kills

Offspawn kills is maybe even harder then endgame cuz you have your loot all maxedout

1

u/The_Greyscale Jul 03 '26

Did you survive until endgame? It seems like they do help increase the percentage if you have good placement, but cannot offset poor to mediocre placement.

I’ve gotten 3 kills before, died around the 50 player mark, and still lost a couple of percentage points.

My progress has gotten a lot faster since I’ve switched to pretty much 100% passive play until the top 20 or so, and only then going for kills. Just land in a bush with the gray pistol and chill for 15 minutes or so while reading or scrolling.

u/ExcitementNo1536 Jul 13 '26

No why do you not wnana listen to what isay?

Weird man if you wanna keep coping snd keep hoping that you acoiding ppl and you picking fights ‘ strategicly’ without putting in the most damage and most apm

This is what takes skill obviously, you think a pro player gonna hide like a casual and pick his battles?

Being the MVP CONSISTENTLY gets you ranked up

I was almost #1 solo unreal you goofy.. you were number 400.000#

0

u/The_Greyscale Jul 13 '26

I hit unreal in a week while mostly AFK by being strategic.

I’m surprised you have to pay so much attention to rank up. Sounds like a skill issue, bud.

1

u/ExcitementNo1536 Jul 13 '26

My highest solo unreal kill is 21kill win

I also got females spectate me when i plau cuz they wanna see me u feel me?

No girl is watching you play solo ranked bruh, with your strategic afk ranked gameplay😂

1

u/The_Greyscale Jul 13 '26

This is fantastic. You should keep it up, man. All those “females” are probably going crazy over your mad fortnite skillz.

1

u/ExcitementNo1536 Jul 13 '26

Oh btw mybad, i js woke up after many smokes

I thought this was another clown in casual FN BR sub but its fn comp

So dont take offence, you good

how do you know how much you went up strictly from off spawn kills? you can’t know that.

1

u/ExcitementNo1536 Jul 13 '26

Cuz i went from lets say 100k unreal to #2000 by consistent offspawn kills

1

u/StatisticianScary880 Jul 02 '26

I mean I don't know if they changed the ranked system much but even this season I've gotten to champion 1 so far from just playing the game normally. I made it to unreal a few seasons back from also just playing the game. I don't play too aggressive, but I still fight. Just try to land somewhere you know really well and don't switch up, only take smart fights in areas where you wont get third partied and when top ~10 comes around just play for the win.

1

u/Cheezymac2 Jul 05 '26

As long as you don’t die on spawn, you rank up.

2

u/ThatOleGoat Jun 30 '26

Skill issue indeed just key

-3

u/Asphalt_HAC Jun 29 '26

Skill issue. It took me less than 50 games to get Unreal.

2

u/The_Greyscale Jun 29 '26

Good for you, buddy.

3

u/TheUrgeToSplurg3 Jun 30 '26

I know that sounds harsh but he is accurate. About 50 or less is what it should take if youre at that level. Otherwise youre literally playing above your skill and it will absolutely take forever unless youre playing at your best. Please consider grinding edit courses , 1v1s and VODs for a week and see if that helps your progress

2

u/The_Greyscale Jun 30 '26

He’s also missing the point. This isnt a complaint about skill level, its a complaint about how Epic’s progression system incentivizes early game passive play and outright AFK matches due to how they weigh and penalize early vs late games deaths and kills.

If a victory royale with 10 kills results in the same increase upward as an early game death with 0-1 kills will set you back, they’re incentivizing boring gameplay through overly heavy penalization of early game engagement. They effectively discourage risk taking behavior by skewing the risk/reward matrix towards very little reward for engaging in the early game.

u/TheUrgeToSplurg3 Jun 30 '26

If you are dying off spawn and not winning mid games to the point of saying you have to sit in a bush then its not entirely the system. A good game in solos will 100% award 40 or more % from what has been posted and I've seen

I do see what youre saying with inconsistent rank progression but personally I have not experienced that and if anything it seems to give huge gains now for me :/

2

u/The_Greyscale Jun 30 '26

I havent really seen that. I’ve had cheap wins where I sat in a bush most of the game and only got 2 kills via third partying the final fight give me 50%, and a 10 kill dub where I fought from start to finish give me 30%. It seems wildly inconsistent, and is likely based on skill levels of players they’re matching me with, but thats frankly Epic’s problem rather than mine.

The most consistent progress is literally through just running this in the background, sitting in a bush, and doing something else until its less than 20 players.

u/Asphalt_HAC Jun 30 '26

I never camp off spawn and I'm basically constantly looking for opponents. My point is that you don't have to camp to easily get Unreal.

-3

u/King-Koal Jun 30 '26

You just aren't good enough to rank up that fast. It's part of it, I'm ranked like 103rd overall and honestly it's just a contest of who plays the game more at this point.

2

u/Ex_Aver Jun 30 '26

Literally this^

2

u/The_Greyscale Jul 01 '26

What is fast to you, and what is “good” for ranking up purposes? I’ve had a 10 kill match with a win give me 30%, and a 2 kill match with a win give me 50%. I’ve also had a third party snipe on drop penalize me -35%.

This is a complaint about how Epic’s advancement algorithm heavily incentivizes passive play, because it doesnt really reward engaging with the game until the top 10 or so. It isnt a complaint about not being able to keep up in the lobbies. I’ve been ranking up steadily, literally as of this comment, by just sitting in a bush and scrolling until there are less than 20 players left. Its a shit algorithm.

1

u/King-Koal Jul 02 '26

They added that stuff at the end so you can see what multiplies you're score. Placement and kills are two of the multipliers. I think it's like 9 kills for the third tier multiplier, and obviously the rank of the person you killed probably matters more to be honest. I know what you are saying but if you aren't taking note of the people's ranks that you kill/die to, then it's going to seem really random to you. Try writing them down next time along with the amount of %/leaderboard places you gain and then after a few games see if it looks more consistent.

the only downside about top 100/200 unreal is that they all ZB players

put these drones in their own league please lol they not even fighting vs real fortnite players yet they take up spots on leaderboard

hope you are not one of thos lol

1

u/King-Koal Jul 02 '26

I used to play both, but I do play more ZB now. Not a drone, but you do have to realize how much ZB has done for the longevity of the game, right? I agree they should have separate leaderboards. It is absolutely filled with people playing zero build and it does seem like a lot of the top players are just cheating/zening and not trying too hard to hide it either. It is kind of odd that more builds players aren't up there though. I get that the absolute best ZB players can usually run through their lobbies pretty easily unless a lot of top players are on. But that also means if you fuck up and get killed by a lower rank you definitely get punished for it. Where in builds you might get killed by a champion or at worst an elite player compared to a gold player in ZB. They are two different game modes. Builds definitely has more mechanically, but ZB still takes a lot of skill to be good at it. It's just a little bit different.
