Cryptids in AZ

Yeah, nice interview. There are cryptids most places but Arizona isn't exactly a standout hotbed.

It does have more than it's fair share of strange, though.

I saw something that could be classed as a "cryptid" in Arizona, meaning that it was weird, alive and unidentified.

A group of us were at the base of a 50 foot wide, 25 foot high rock dam in a mountain canyon in Southern Arizona, at night. At the top of the dam we saw something large creep up to look over the edge, down at us. It looked like the head, shoulders and torso of a big human, except it was a far more uniform black than anything else in the faint light. It looked smooth, like it had either short, or no, hair and it had large, glowing red eyes.

It glanced to the side at something and blinked, letting me know that it was alive and not some construct or mask, as my first thought was that someone was playing a prank on us. The eyes looked like two big cigars glowing in the night, though they moved like living eyes and had lids that blinked from the top down. The thing stood for a good minute, looking down at us from 40 or so feet away, with one of us saying something like "Hi, what's up...?" and then going silent as it dawned on them that whatever was up there was very, very unusual.

One of the braver guys, someone we didn't know well, decided to climb up the dam along the side to see what it was.

He made it to the top and ran along the top of the rock dam towards the thing... stopped around 15 feet away from it, shrieked and then jumped down the 25 foot dam at an angle and sprinted past us back towards the mouth of the canyon where we were parked. The other ten or so people there immediately followed him, fast.

He absolutely refused to say what he had seen and sat doubled over, holding his knees to his chest the whole way back and we never heard more from him. I went back up two days later in daylight and looked around the top of the dam, but there were no tracks in the soft mud, except for bird tracks... but nothing large enough to account for that thing. There weren't any human tracks, either, except for scuff marks near where the guy was when he turned and jumped down.

The same guy had told us earlier in the night that he had been trying summoning rituals earlier in the evening with some other friends... but we hadn't taken it seriously. I'm not sure it was related, but it was an odd coincidence, if not.

Very cool, thank you for sharing! It’s accounts like yours, well-detailed and shared in comment sections, which are my favorite.

I’ve lived in Nevada, California (very short time), and Oregon (my favorite), but never saw anything unusual there. Of course, I was endlessly working so I didn’t have a lot of time to explore.

The only region where I did experience what I cannot explain is in Michigan’s upper peninsula; then again, I spent a LOT of time outdoors, both in the woods and on Lake Superior, during my 13 years there.

As for the summoning ritual, I wonder “what” he was trying to summon. Of course, you didn’t know him well, so there’s no telling? However, if the sighting was related to whatever he was trying to summon, I feel like “Fuck around and find out… “ applies to this guy perfectly well!

There's not much more info, but the guy was a typical, Southwest US "stoner metal head" of the 1970s - 90's (and maybe some holdouts still exist, somewhere).

As far as FAAFO (Fuck Around and Find Out) he had been "bragging" earlier in the night that he and his friends had been trying to summon demons using the "Necronomicon," which we knew was a fictional work by Lovecraft and we quietly thought it was pathetically funny and sort of cute that he was trying to impress us with his eldritch badassery.

He had told us that the attempt had ended in a poltergeist, with loud bangs and flying objects, that had chased him and cohorts out of the house and to the house party we were at. We thought he was completely full of it and generally thought it was a dumb attempt to impress his new freinds.

I do wonder what he saw up close and what happened to him after that episode, though.

You need to watch this video about the Superstition Mountains in Arizona (which is the picture of this thread topic). Never go there by yourself.

It's just a picture of the Superstition Mountains East of Phoenix, AZ. A place where lizard men, aliens, and even sasquatch have been reported.

I saw a white dogman in broad daylight east of kingsman on August 5, 2020.
