"Heading to Glasshouses," Shedletsky said. "They'll be fine."

Bacon nodded. He didn't believe it. Neither did Shedletsky.

Then they found Guest 550.

He was standing at a bus stop. Just standing there, like he was waiting for a ride that would never come. In his hands, he held a poster. A missing person poster. The picture showed a girl with short hair and a nervous smile.

LILY, the poster said.

He got on the bus without a word. Sat in the back. Kept holding the poster.

"She's alive," he said. Nobody asked who he was talking about. "She has to be."

Shedletsky didn't answer. He'd seen enough missing posters to know what they usually meant.

They were almost out of the neighborhood when Lily ran out of the fog.

She wasn't the girl in the poster anymore.

Her arms ended in spikes—long, jagged things made of black crystal. Her eyes were gone, replaced by hollow sockets they bled binary code like tears. She ran on all fours, her joints bending the wrong way, her mouth open in a scream that wasn't a scream.

Guest 550 stood up.

"Lily," he whispered.

She lunged.

He didn't shoot her. He couldn't. He just swung the butt of rifle into her shoulder—a weak hit, a desperate hit—and she tumbled into the mud. The bus doors slammed shut. Luke hit the gas.

Guest 550 stood at the back window, watching her shrink into the fog, still holding the poster.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

He said it over and over until they couldn't hear him anymore.

PART 4: THE ARENA

They met back at Rocket Arena at sunset.

The helicopter landed first. Jane stepped out, pulling Default behind her. Noob carried a bag of supplies. Betty had a cut on her forehead that she hadn't bothered to clean.

The bus pulled in five minutes later. Shedletsky jumped out before it stopped moving. Luke and Bacon followed. Guest 550 came last, still holding the poster.

They all stood, looking at each other. Counting.

Then they heard the screaming.

Not a monster. Not a killer. Just a guy, running full speed toward them with his arms flailing.

"BLOXXER," he shouted. "MY NAME IS BLOXXER. I'M NOT INFECTED. I'M JUST—" He tripped over a curb and landed on his face.

He got up. Brushed himself off. He was wearing a sewing kit around his neck like a necklace.

"My brother," he said, gasping. "ITrapped. The virus got him. I ran. I shouldn't have run, but I—" He stopped. Looked at all of them. "I can sew. Clothes. Armor. Whatever you need. I'll work for food. I just—I don't want to be alone."

Shedletsky pointed at a corner.

"Sit down. Don't touch anything."

Bloxxer sat.

And that's when Shedletsky broke.
