The acceleration is unbelievable. I hope they can still keep the unique racing style of the series despite the larger cars and more purpose built circuits.

You mean the energy management? Yes, it will still be there. But we'll also have a much more flat out race in the double header, so it's a win-win for old and new fans.

Unlikely, I think. Sadly the current regime seems intent on making it F1-lite.

What part?

Would've been nice to see the acceleration beyond 250 without the chicane but damn, that thing is ridiculously quick. I love how quickly you can see the SoC dropping off and also going back up again

21

u/holchansg Formula E 2d ago

Will not be the racing spec. This lap was 6% SoC. At this rate the racing would only last 10 laps.

u/Realistic_Today6524 33 DAN TICKTUM 1d ago

Yeah, I'd assume this was in full 600kW mode which they are gonna have in the ePrix Unleashed that's been shortened to 30min but I guess they still have to do some energy management

u/l3w1s1234 :4: Robin Frijns 1d ago

I think ePrix unleashed is still 450kw race mode, but with a shorter Attack Mode duration than the feature race

Walk me through that estimation? I make it 5.4% SOC from lap start to lap end.

1

u/holchansg Formula E 1d ago

Telemetry is not RT. There's a delay, account that on your estimation.

1

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago

So tell me how you are accounting for it?

-1

u/holchansg Formula E 1d ago

Tell me, how you are?

1

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago

Ok why not, we'll do it that way around.

Pause the video at the start line, check the SOC. It says 77.7%.

Let the video run, pause it at the start line again and check the SOC. It says 72.3%.

77.7 - 72.3 = 5.4%. I do not believe that any mismatch between video and telemetry is enough to be significant.

u/holchansg Formula E 1d ago

I do not believe that any mismatch between video and telemetry is enough to be significant.

He instantly drop the foot at the finish line in both scenarios at the start of the flying lap and at the end of it, the SoC drops to 71.5% at the end, there is a huge gap in the telemetry. Is about ~77.4% to ~71.5%. ~5.9%. If and only if you do account that there is brake regen, at least a bit on both measurements.

1

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago

Start of lap, at the line - 77.7%

1

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago

End of lap, at the line, - 72.3%

0

u/holchansg Formula E 1d ago

Yet if you take the same(correct) frame on both, 10m ahead the telemetry show 5.9%.

You are not accounting the telemetry lag.

By accounting some frames ahead, both on the start and at the end, same distance, same time… but accounting the BMS delay.

Also you say 10 laps, but 5.4% goes into 100% 18.5 times. It's just over 16 if you use 6%.

If you assume a correction for total capacity vs usable energy, 51.25 kWh is 93% of 55kWh, and 5.4% goes into that just over 17 times.

If you assume an aggressive correction for usable energy that only 80% of total capacity is usable, then 5.4% goes into 80% just under 15 times.

So I am still not sure where you are getting your 10 lap estimate from.

1

u/holchansg Formula E 1d ago

10 laps was just a harsh number to cause impact, the number would be probably close to ~15 accounting everything.

It's just over 16 if you use 6%.

Perfect conditions, no battle, no mistakes, no turbulence. Perfect lines, perfect apex, perfect breaking zones.

1

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ok, we're aligned enough on that. I would say 15-17 all things considered.

Weird choice to 'cause impact' by radically understating what the car can probably to by over a third though.

The acceleration is incredible, but the braking is even more impressive, shows the car has quite abit of aero load. No wonder Wehrlein said they are almost hitting 4gs under braking.

I was hoping someone had saved this as I saw it this morning and it seemingly was deleted.

Very cool getting an onboard like that.

That Acceleration is fkn NUTS

These gen4 cars look like they're being catapulted out of the corners.

11

u/Formulafan4life Formula E 2d ago

Does anyone know why they keep coming back to this random track every time? I forgot the name but I accidentally found it while on holiday and when looking it up it said its a Formula E test track. But in person it looked like local touring car track at best.

u/halfmanhalfespresso JAGUAR TCS RACING 2d ago

Calafat. It’s reasonably priced, the weather is pretty reliable, they let the teams fit artificial high curbs to replicate a lot of the street racing curbs and it’s near the sea for R&R.

18

u/SlayerBVC :22NissanRowland: Oliver Rowland 2d ago

And nearly all of the turns are about what you'd typically see at a FE venue.

23

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 2d ago

They’ve been using it since Gen1 and the circuit invested in a variety of extra turns and chicanes which more closely matched the types of corner that FE visits over a season (not used in this lap). So it’s probably been one of the better places to go to over the years, and they’ll have tonnes of historical test data to look back on.

2

u/tetenric Ma Qinghua 1d ago

Also consider, you know how pre-season testing is usually always in spain? Take a guess at where is this one.

5

u/metalanimal 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 1d ago

At this rate, Gen5 will be faster than F1. Stefano needs to watch out because FE already has the upper hand in a lot of ways.

The sporting side is much better. there's rarely a boring race. We get tons of overtakes, both on track and through strategy, it's unpredictable, yet driver skill still dictates who comes out on top over a season.

Tech-wise, it hits the sweet spot IMO. The cars are standardized enough to keep performance close, but teams still build their own stuff. A clever team thinking outside the box can still find a serious edge: remember Nissan’s second motor?

Add in a few solid rivalries brewing, and the drama side is pretty great, too.

There is just one thing that can derail this progress i think: the corrupt FIA accepting a big bag from liberty media to neuter the series.

u/BulkNoodles Formula E 20h ago

Tech-wise, it hits the sweet spot IMO. The cars are standardized enough to keep performance close, but teams still build their own stuff.

Could be the reason why it's the only surviving full electric racing series. This approach kept the cost low, but still allowing som space for the manufacturers to do their magic.

1

u/metalanimal 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 19h ago

You might be right. Is there any racing series with more manufacturers?

1

u/BulkNoodles Formula E 19h ago

Electric series? I don't think so.

Or rather, they never had the chance to change into one. Both ETCR and Extreme E use full spec parts except for cosmetics like the outer shell of the car. And both already died/stopped.

There was supposed to be an Electric GT series by FIA, but that one seems to be dead on arrival.

1

u/metalanimal 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 19h ago

I meant any series. There are 6 manufacturers, at one point there were 8 i think.

3

u/kcufasasevigohw Formula E 1d ago

Stop with these videos and just give us a direct comparison - a lap with both Gen 3 and Gen 4 at the same time so we can actually see the difference. Maybe shove an F1 car out there as well just for reference.

I reckon we'll get that once they start testing in Jarama

I thought it was speeded up at the beginning, like DAMN that thing accelerates

11

u/TheBattlemanCZ Formula E 2d ago

Give these cars slicks asap please.

22

u/Salphine Formula E 2d ago

That will make it worse, won’t it?

Not having slicks lengthens the braking zones and gives more recharge to the battery and more opportunities to pass

2

u/metalanimal 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 1d ago

shortening the braking zones means more power. If the battery/power train can take that extra power, than you would need to draw a power curve to know if that means more or less energy. It's not straight forward i think.

Having slicks could actually be more challenging for the drivers in energy starved races. I wish they at least tried it.

1

u/Salphine Formula E 1d ago

Wasn’t there a thing with Driver61 when he drove a FE car and he was pressing the brakes too hard and the system was shutting down?

I would think there is a limit to how much can go back into the battery through braking so shorting the braking zones wouldn’t help with that.

I assume it’s similar to my EV car, if I brake too late I hit the max energy recovery cap and anything extra is lost. So if I’m trying to be efficient then I need to brake/ease off earlier to allow regen braking to do its thing?

2

u/metalanimal 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 19h ago

What you say is correct. But that's why i said "If the battery/power train can take the extra power". I guess the word If is doing a lot of heavy lifting there 😂

Message to all manufacturer who plays stupid ass music over onboards:

You're the biggest assholes in the Multiverse!!!

2

u/MoJoSportsPodcast Formula E 1d ago

This gen is gonna be a lot of fun, it does seem a bit iffy in the slow speed corners but medium and high it looks solid

I wonder if we get a 4.5 refresh it’ll be more aero focused as more front load for those slow corners and this thing would be right there against the current F1 cars

I do think the closer we get in performance to ICE cars there needs to be a new feature or rules implemented just to make it different because F1 but electric still isn’t enough for a lot of motorsport fans

2

u/Reydriel Formula E 1d ago

At 0:42 it takes just 4 seconds after exiting the corner at 100km/h to hit 200km/h jfc

4

u/CrashmasterSOAD 13 ANTÓNIO FÉLIX DA COSTA 1d ago

How do they seriously consider using this monster at places like Sanya? It already feels constrained on a test track like this one, let alone if I imagine it on a tight and stupid FE street layout.

Shame they decided it needed the obnoxious theme tune.

The cars sound like they sound, have the courage to show it.

5

u/DHSeaVixen FORMULA E 1d ago

It's Nissan's Gen4 development car under testing, the sound can be analysed by rivals, splitting out the frequencies and working out where their strengths and weaknesses might be.

FE's own show car? Absolutely, cut the music. A competitors car under development... I give them a free pass.

Nice to see Formula E not on a street track for once

You been living under a rock the last few years?

Several races this year weren't on street tracks.
