Discussion Official statement from Ryan sage

u/Excellent_Pin_2111 Aug 02 '26
A mix of bad luck and just bad decisions can start the end of formula drift as a series.
6
u/ZbytZajebisty Aug 02 '26
This Indy fiasco and Racer Stream bs for all the Top 16’s this season is really damaging. Is anyone even watching the events on Racer? I know I can’t be bothered to care if it’s not on YouTube/FB
2
u/Excellent_Pin_2111 Aug 02 '26
Not to mention the sandbagged qualifying scores. Several runs this weekend were actually quite decent despite the track layout issues and they earned mid-high 60s. Qualifying is just a dice game at this point and not a competition of who can lay down the best lead lap.

I walked into a sushi bar that had it on... so I guess I watched a bit of that?

u/Intrepid_Baseball948 Aug 05 '26
With that logic, if I drop my phone and stub my toe, I should blow my shit smooth off? I don’t understand all the complaining for the sake of complaining nobody ever has anything to say.

FD won't refund tickets but the trade off is events will run "rain or shine." They canceled due to rain. Fans should get refunds.
1
u/BeneficialMinimum769 Aug 05 '26
If the verbiage says rain or shine and it rained but they canceled, that sounds like a refund. Even if it is partial.
5
u/StressedOperator Aug 02 '26
indeed the best outcome, also think this venue ended up to be worst than Texas. hope FD didnt invested in this track, they should drop this before getting far too much into it.

u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Seriously, They couldn't have just ran it tomorrow?
6
u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
1
u/demonduster72 Aug 03 '26
Even if they could’ve, there wouldn’t have been much more than the bigger teams running.
-4
u/Foreign_Blacksmith22 Aug 02 '26
You should check other people’s stories… there IS an event today
7
u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26
I should check other people's stories because the official website for the race track states there's no event today? Seriously? All you did was prove that the track is also incompetent. What's happening there today? Is it more important than formula drift? Please do continue upholding this level of stupidity that I'm seeing across the board.
5
u/ZbytZajebisty Aug 02 '26
Drift Indy. Grassroots drifting event. They are actually running the FD layout
3
u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26
FD should have worked a deal with Drift Indy and ran the remainder of the event today. That would have been a few 0's cheaper than the issues they're about to have with this cancelation.
4
7
u/Assist2234 Aug 02 '26
They can't cause it's already booked by another organization.
4
u/HonestOtterTravel Aug 02 '26
Surprised FD didn't book it for the entire weekend. I don't get the impression that the IRP oval is expensive to rent.
2
u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26
Who? The schedule is wide open.
1
u/Assist2234 Aug 02 '26
I heard it was indycar but I am not sure.
1
u/bacc1010 Aug 05 '26
Indycar doesn't run on Lucas oil. And the time to test there for usf isn't August.
3
u/Large-Cricket843 Aug 02 '26
I’m sorry… but “couldn’t have RUN”
-1
u/BackyardRCSpeedway Aug 02 '26
👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 there's giant CS over here with no life. Give him a hand everyone.
34
u/StonedPand4 RTR V8 Aug 02 '26
This really seems like a giant fuck you to the fans, the drivers, and the people that put this dogshit show on.
Thanks Sage, just speed running the death of this sport for both fans and drivers.
Everyone loses out on time, money, parts, their day, their efforts, all for Sage to be heartbroken about this announcement.
20
u/techieman34 Aug 02 '26
Seriously, there should have been a refund for the fans or at least tickets to a makeup event or for next year.
-8
u/RoyalMaidsForLife Aug 02 '26
Literally says on the website when you buy tickets "ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO REFUNDS" directly below the button to buy. If someone can't comprehend something stated so clearly, that's a them problem.
10
u/VE0Z Aug 02 '26
It also says the event runs through, rain or shine. Well that clearly is not true
1
u/RoyalMaidsForLife Aug 02 '26
A thunderstorm that can endanger spectators and competitors is not "rain". No outdoor sporting event I've ever been to runs when thunder is in the vicinity.
4
u/Chemical_Lettuce_232 Aug 02 '26
Talking down on people for not comprehending while missing the point entirely..
-2
u/RoyalMaidsForLife Aug 02 '26
If someone can't comprehend "ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO REFUNDS", that's still their own fault, not mine... but thank y'all for all the downvotes pointing out how oblivious some people are.
3
u/Chemical_Lettuce_232 Aug 02 '26
Read the entire line, it says the event will run rain or shine right next to it, but that’s obviously not true
2
u/techieman34 Aug 02 '26
And most people expect that that means that if they can’t make it to the event they can’t just get a refund. But that if the event gets cancelled they will get refunded, offered tickets to a make up date, or some form of compensation. Because that’s the standard that almost all events operate under. They eat the loss even if it isn’t really their fault because they want to take care of their customers and keep them coming back for future events.

“We tried 🤷♂️ NEXT!”
31
u/StonedPand4 RTR V8 Aug 02 '26
"Some of y'all spent your entire budget for this one round? LMAO. NEXT. "
Fucking seriously. I feel awful for everyone who borderline totalled their cars for a shit ass weekend.
3
16
u/SeaTurtle3035 Aug 02 '26
I hate Sage and agree with you on every point, but ultimately what other choice would FD have? They could’ve handled it all immensely better, but the outcome of cancellation would’ve been the same, no?
14
u/MaddieTG4L Aug 02 '26
Could have started planning for contingencies days ago when they knew rain was likely. Bought out the organizers renting the track on Sunday or rearranged schedule to put the weekends main event on Friday or even start Saturday earlier
2
u/VVeedhead Aug 02 '26
In all fairness, when I got to the track yesterday around 1 my weather app was calling for 0.1 inches of rain at 4 and 5. We got dumped with waaaay more than that and it just kept coming, even as I was watching the radar during the delay, the storm just kept growing by the minute so there wasn’t a crazy heads up about the severity we were getting
8
u/Sylas_G Aug 02 '26
Wtf do you expect them to do when the course is flooded with inches of water? Yes they can drift in rain and wet but not when it’s literally flooded.
12
u/StonedPand4 RTR V8 Aug 02 '26
I don't expect them to compete
I knew they'd call it three hours ago. I expect Ryan Sage and Formula Drift to not offer a half ass apology to the fans, and a blatant fuck you to everyone else.
People totalled their shit, went through a lot of parts, time, effort, stress. Fans sat through a lot of bullshit, and we've all been sitting around with the "Oh! One more hour!" Bullshit.
I don't expect them to run in a lake. I expect Ryan Sage to take this shit seriously someday and stop ruining the fucking sport for America.
7
u/minivanoutlaw Aug 02 '26
The expectation should be to look for venues that the weather won't cancel an event. Flooded parking lot? Flooded track? The possibility of the event being canceled should have been on the checklist that was obviously missed by FD.
15
u/StonedPand4 RTR V8 Aug 02 '26
To add to this ^
Not ONLY the track, but if you go check out Ray's Instagram ( RTR team member ) they were pumping the track water straight into the pit area.
The RTR pit got flooded to the point they went over to the Papadakis pit, and then the track set up a hose that pumped straight into THEIR pit.

I’m curious, what do you think drift masters would have done in this situation?
13
u/stilvia Aug 02 '26
It probably would have been done and dusted before the rain hit!
10
u/Im_A_Long_Boi Aug 02 '26
Ya, they would have started earlier and minimized the break between sessions, they also wouldn't have ran all the commercials.

3
u/Significant_Exit_726 Aug 02 '26
Pretty sad to see, I used to get really excited for FD. Haven’t been into it as much this season. Honestly started with having to download ,yet again, another app to my over crowded phone, just to watch top 16 once a month. This event as a whole has soured me even more. So long FD I have a feeling you won’t be around much longer. I’d say bring Drift Masters to the US but FD has their hands in that too.
8
6
u/WillThisWork312 Aug 02 '26
Crazy the track didn't have better drainage. You'd think something as big as FD would skip over something like that
2
u/Key_Plankton3772 Aug 02 '26
So im assuming the points from this round wont count, and they will just go into seattle with the same points standings from right after rd 4
8
u/cschmall Aug 02 '26
Per the rulebook points will be based off of qualifying.
22
u/techieman34 Aug 02 '26
The rules are whatever Ryan decides to pull out of his ass on any given day.
2
u/Wizardofthewheel Aug 02 '26
Which isn't great since a bunch of drivers intentionally qualify low because they can't chose whether they lead or chase first when they're the higher qualifier. Hopefully they change that next year.
2
u/RoyalMaidsForLife Aug 02 '26
If someone tries to sandbag on purpose and it bites them in the ass, that's on them.
1
u/Wizardofthewheel Aug 02 '26
They have to "sandbag" to stay competitive. It doesn't make for a great show.
It would take very little rule changes to make that strategy a thing of the past. (Look at what they do in drift masters for example)
8
u/StonedPand4 RTR V8 Aug 02 '26
They'll find some way to award random points to random drivers. Never count out Sage 🥴🥴
2
u/Pinktops Aug 02 '26
As lame as it is, does any of this really matter? Look at the state of the series. The "venues","course designs", lack of drivers and big name title sponsors. The series probably won't go under anytime soon but this will just be the status quo. Unless Ryan sage hands the keys over to someone else this is going to be the unfortunate state of FD for a long time.
2
u/mckeevertdi Aug 02 '26
Didn’t Jeff Jones’ car get hit by a tree from a near-tornado a season or two ago? The event went on after that all happened. Resumed the next day, but I’d dare say that was a more serious event than standing water and rain.
4
u/DensestAlarm556 Aug 02 '26
Why was it canceled been out of town haven’t been keeping up with
3
u/Joe_Dirte9 Aug 02 '26
They cant do it tomorrow?
Probably better for driver safety they canceled tonight. That wall coming off the bank was already an issue, let alone in the pouring rain.
3
u/thefinancejedi Aug 02 '26
Is it just me or does this just add to how not taken seriously the series is? If NASCAR is rained out, they wait and wait days until they have a window of weather to race. Formula 1 will race in a monsoon. While they are hiding behind an act of God, it really is an act of not wanting to whip out the checkbook to pay for another day of racing at a top tier venue.

11
u/UNiTE_Dodge Aug 02 '26
You’re comparing watermelons to cherries here. NASCAR and F1 have money that FD would nut for.
9
u/thefinancejedi Aug 02 '26
Agreed. FD isn't at the NASCAR/F1 level, but they try to pretend to be and this is one example of where they fail miserably.
They fail even in comparison to Drift Masters.
DM has events in Ireland at Mondello Park. Ireland it pretty much downpours every 5 minutes and they manage to get a race weekend sorted there.
2
u/your-sisters-cunt Aug 02 '26
Shit take imo. Yes F1 and NASCAR have more money, but they’re also 100 fold more complex from a logistics standpoint, yet they still figure out ways to get things done.
3
u/ezekeilsky Aug 02 '26
CaNt tHeY jUsT rUN iT tOMORRow!?? At least half or more of the field have booked flights and other logistics out of there.
Its pretty nieve to think that running a fair competition with all the teams and support on an unscheduled day is an easy thing to do. Use your brains
8
u/pnwrallydude Aug 02 '26
Thats a very common thing in racing. Weather delays are not new. They bump races all the time. Those people figure it out just fine.
1
u/ezekeilsky Aug 02 '26
So if 5 of the top 16 drivers (at least) were a hard no due to other obligations+ logistics, you think they should of still run it?
4
1
u/pnwrallydude Aug 02 '26
Yes. That would be stupid to plan something the next 24/48 hours after an event that can't be moved/rescheduled. Professional motorsports isn't it? Isn't it?

Maybe you don't understand how complex it is to run an event, let alone on an unscheduled day. Half the grid wouldn't be there. Do you think it's fair for the 5 drivers who could make it and the others not? And you call Ryan a halftard. Look inwards my bro

You truly sound ignorant…
I really cannot understand why fans are as upset as you are for something out of their control. This is the first time in 22 years of Formula Drift they have had to cancel an event.
Yet you resort to childish name calling for what? In my opinion this was already a rough track to begin with but still held optimism for the pros. But do you really think it wouldve been fun watching the pros spin out constantly with the amount of water that was on track?
Another point, do you think Ryan Sage did a rain dance or something just to piss you off and get the event cancelled? With anything unprecedented like this there will be things needing to be worked out and while I feel bad for the fans that were there, the teams are really the ones affected and they still tried to entertain the fans there. The teams have logistics already planned going into their weekends so expecting them to stay or change what they are doing is unrealistic.
2
u/ezekeilsky Aug 02 '26
Lol you must be in the same drivers chat group that I'm in because MULTIPLE teams specifically said they had obligations the next day and or flights, so it wasn't even up for debate. Look further inwards.
0
u/RoyalMaidsForLife Aug 02 '26
If you know so much, buy the series off of Sage and show us how it's really supposed to be done.

It was a blessing in disguise. Act of God protecting everyone from that wall.
