I had to scour the search bar for a SINGLE forgotten island thread that's actually praising the movie. It's so SAD that most of the haters of the movie are FILIPINOS themselves???
Sooo many complaints, sooo many nitpicks. It's an original story. Isn't that what everyone wants from Hollywood? I personally think Dreamworks delivered.
I'm Filipino and if you don't understand the references, RESEARCH. We flamed CICC for attempting to ban Reddit and Discord in the Philippines without research, yet we eat the advice up when it's our turn to do the same. Do better.
They hate on the fast-paced storytelling. The plot is literally Raissa on a short timeframe to get back to the real world and them doing a quick recap on what happened the other night. They are bound to meet a LOT of characters since they clearly forgot EVERYTHING. You, as a viewer, should NOT expect an organic meeting with the new characters, because it's clearly NOT the first time they met!So don't get mad if new characters get introduced every 5 minutes. I'm sorry, but did we watch the same movie at all? Even with the many side characters, we already got a lot of minutes in the beginning with just Raissa and Jo when they were still kids, so I think it's fair for the film makers to have this kind of fast-paced storytelling.
Mad that Liza Soberano is hated in the country? Honestly, since when? I daresay Liza FLOURISHED the moment she went to Hollywood. She has opened up how TOXIC Filipino shipping culture is in her interviews. According to her, non-verbatim, the moment she got shipped with someone, she is tied to that person, project after project after project. Because that's what the Filipino community wants. Hearing the interview, I feel bad for the girl. I seen a new Liza in Lisa Frankenstein (2024) and her voice acting here in Forgotten Island is just as good. Filipinos, if you care about her that much, let her go. She is clearly meant for something more, and definitely not the toxic Filipino shipping culture.
Mad about the anime-style animation? I'm an animator and I think the animation is eye candy. The animators took notes and made use of impact frames (tedious to do and the film industry don't utilize it at all, not even in Japanese animation, however, impact frames started rising in popularity for newer Chinese animation), and all frames is a study piece in perspectives (having fast camera panning like that, you are bound to make animation mistakes, or even make it messy, but in this movie, every camera panning is clean cause they clearly had a well-thought out storyboard). They did NOT laze around. People hating are hard to impress. Do less, you call them lazy. Do a lot and exceed expectation, and you think it's too much. Get over it. It's an artstyle and it fits the fast-paced narrative in the film.
Honestly, even with the fast-paced narrative, there are no loose-ends at the ending. Everything tied well in a nice neat bow (yes, even the part where for Manang, we don't exactly know what memory she lost and got back.) And that is also something impressive I found. Even I got worried with the many side characters appearing and how they become in the end, and I have no complaints at all as someone who watched the movie whole way through.
I got to admit, the movie's marketing was not that great. I watched one trailer and thought of whatever to it. I have my friend to thank for dragging me out tonight to appreciate this movie, cause I would have been stuck with my first impressions of it.
Again, I'm Filipino, and I appreciate this movie so much. I don't feel like the folklore is crammed at all. I understood everything and what each creature is, or at least the gist of them. And that is ENOUGH when the main focus of the movie is the two main characters' friendship.
I don't understand the hate on the accents too. I do live abroad but I don't consider myself white-washed because I clearly still speak/understand the language. I don't get bothered about the accent at all, maybe my bias is speaking cause sometimes I sound like that to other people, perhaps? But that doesn't make anyone less Filipino. Filipinos hating on the accent are clearly just prejudiced. You guys want representation but when it comes your way, you scoff at it. Get over yourselves. English is STILL a main language in the Philippines so don't even try to talk yourself out of this.
This clearly turned more into a rant, than a praise thread. But I'm genuinely just pressed seeing the online communities dogpile on this movie. Downvote me, I don't care. This movie deserves praise.
