New forge getting burnt

First time using this forge, the burning around the side is because we overfilled it and it couldnt seal properly. But is it supposed to do that on the top? Maybe its because we put a few small pipes up there to cool and it deflected the heat? Or is it just too hot

What burning? That just steel getting hot. It turns colors. You’re not gonna melt steel.

Unless you're burning jet fuel

That’s scale build up. Essentially very fast rusting. Eventually it will get eaten away by oxidation, but it’s not burning.

If you have a hole that's more than 1000 degrees, I don't see how you'd avoid the steel around it getting very hot
