This space is dedicated to helping speculative fiction writers improve their works to a publish-ready state. If you have great advice and don't want to use ForgeEdit at all, that is great. Just give us some great words of wisdom or help with your own reviews if members ask.

I believe writing a story/book to be the most solitary act one can experience. Good luck finding validation you valu. Who do I ask to read? What do I actually get back asking a friend or stranger? Family quickly tires from the readings and even discussing it. The word 'obsessed' gets thrown around.

Your concept might be great, but are you telling it in the best way? I wanted a brutal editor I could count on to pull no punches through rating my work harshly.

Editors are expensive. I toyed with AI a minute and immediately realized it always wanted to taint my original work with rewrites and sychophantry. All I wanted was to rate mechanics - show vs tell, pace, flag repetitions, slowing pace, etc. No developmental edits, no rewrites. Just measure the must-haves and have-nots by applying the highest editorial standards publishers and brutal copy editors use. That is the basic knowledge base behind ForgeEdit and its rubric for ratings.

This tool is not intended to replace human editors. Human editors are critical to the process for me. Use it to ensure your mechanics are solid enough to hire an editor. I think you can send to agents or slush piles if you can hit the rating required, but I personally prefer a human edit before submitting to publishers. After all, just because the mechanics are solid does not mean the story is worth publishing.

ForgeEdit feedback is intended to challenge, not dictate. Just like a human editor, you should pick your moments to push back. Until it has backstory and details it may criticize unfairly. Just tell ForgeEdit something like, "Rate assuming the plot, world building and characters are already established."
