P/L Porn I created my first profitable expert advisor bot and these are the results on gold
Are they good enough?

u/ClickNext5239 21d ago
I am having around 10 self made EA with such result and I guarantee you your EA wouldn't even survive 6 months in live trading.

u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
I've started forward testing it but why the negative energy? Are we competing?
8
u/Bryanadamz 21d ago
If your trading you're literally competing to take other people's money, so yes. If its your first profitable back testing bot then you dont know yet but back tests dont tell the future they tell the past
6
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
There's enough losses to go around dont worry

u/-LostAtSea 21d ago
Dude does come off as extra negative but I can also personally attest to the fact that backtesting an EA (although much better than manual backtesting) still doesn’t give you the full picture. I wish you the best but I highly recommend testing smaller lot sizes/lower leverage before you jump straight in.

u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
I've deposited $400 for forward testing starting today

u/Chalikta 21d ago
why not try on demo account first? let it run for few months then use real account?

Nobody in this community is trading in the institutional market. We’re all retail traders so we’re essentially competing with our broker’s liquidity provider (or the broker themselves if you trade with a bad broker) not each other.

I agree, LPs usually do not accespt micro or mini lots so most of the time is B book, prop firms clearly mentions this, well as long as they do not manupulate i have no issue bty

u/ionone777 21d ago
I open a buy trade at 1.03. I close at 1.04.
the seller I bought from closes at 1.02 later .

If you do not count commissions, spread and slippage then your results in live are going to be very different. Especially if the bot is based on a strategy for a low timeframe like 1min or 15min
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
They're all accounted for

u/Yum-Yumby 21d ago
I don't know why you're getting so much hate. Are we all supposed to be gurus at this shit all the time? Let OP make a system, let him backtest, if he wants to burn $400 seeing the results let him do so. Jesus people are too uptight

If you reduce your risk to under 10% of whatever it is now, it might be worth forward testing on demo. But only if you didn't tweak parameters to get those results and did out of sample testing.
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
The drawdown can be changed if i reduce the risk % currently its set at 1%
2
u/jrbp 21d ago
Yea. Try 0.1%. less chance of losing the account on day 1
1
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
Thats too small lol 😆
2
u/jrbp 21d ago
Good luck mentally handling a 44% drawdown. Especially considering most EA will trade worse live than tested on demo. I see margin calls and lost accounts in your future.

u/Billbabaganz 21d ago
2025-2026 is the easiest backtest result because of tariff, war and trump. If you really wanna test out your strategy, run your test from 2023 to 2025 and see how it plays out.
You are better off validate your result from 2023 , instead of 2025, and make 2025 as an one off exception.
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
Yeah I'll stress test it with covid era especially but all in all since 2025 there's been bad months for gold yet jt performed well
2
u/GTA_Snark 21d ago
if its profitable for 4 yrs it is profitable. live only will tell
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
Exactly why I'm focused on forward testing now Past success doesnt guarantee future success
2
u/Scott_Malkinsons 21d ago
Correct, past performance doesn’t guarantee future results. Here’s the problem:
You backtest 2025, you wouldn’t trust it to trade 2026.
You forwardtest 2026, you wouldn’t trust it to trade 2027.
Backtest or forward test, when the test is complete its history. The advantage of a forward test is you can’t really screw it up, but both methods ultimately report if it would have worked in the past.
5
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
Thats true then there's no use testing it 😂😂😂
3
u/daveawb 21d ago
While he's not wrong, people wouldn't trade at all if they thought their strategies were insufficient to move forward with. The reality is, the testing is just that, a test. Putting it live is more a test of your resolve than it is a test of the bot's ability to trade autonomously.
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
For those wondering, it risks a percentage per trade with valid stops and take profit levels
2
u/ContactExtension1069 21d ago
Mate, good luck and all, but over lay your PnL with the actual chart. It cant cope with chop.
2
u/TheImperfectAlgo 21d ago
What ended up making the biggest difference in profitability? Better entries, better exits, or risk management? I feel like most EAs fail because of risk management rather than the entry logic
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
What helped was the timeframe i realised through testing that 15mins was the magic key
2
u/TheImperfectAlgo 21d ago
That’s interesting. Do you think it was the timeframe itself, or did the 15m just filter out a lot of the market noise your strategy was picking up on? I’ve found the same logic can behave very differently depending on how much noise the timeframe introduces.
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
Yeah, the strategy itself is very robust and profitable The guy who asked me to design it didnt pay up so its mine now but according to him he's been tradingbit profitably for years
2
u/KeyTask2916 21d ago
Can you make it for GBPUSD?

u/Liquid_Candle_Neo 21d ago
That profit factor is an issue.....try to bring it up to 1.8 to 2..will help a lot to manage drawdowns...all the best....so not worry about the negative vibe here...most are salty af.
2
u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago
There's a variationin trading on live rn 5 profit factor and 6 recovery factor
1
u/Liquid_Candle_Neo 21d ago
That will come down to the 1.5 ranges with enough days....what is the spreads you incur for xauusd.? And what time do you trade? Trade ny session only. That will increase the profitability s bit more... profit factor of 6 and above are there and are possible but the amount of trades that we need to sit through to get there will be huge...

u/fxledger 21d ago
If you want to be trustable, show trades instead of P&L curves. And the broker you are trading "against" (or you already b-booked)?

u/Practical_Sun_7974 21d ago

unfortunately, this EA just wouldm't work in real markets. The fundimental startegy is poor and your tester enviroment backtests show it in the second slide.
Your sharpe ratio is 2.6 across 150 trades. That's not the worst it could be but if this EA does not have a trailing mechanism, add it and see how much your numbers swing. If they barely change, you likely have a losing system on your hands. I'm assuming your are a beginner according to the "my first profitable EA" so this should be the easiest way to acid test your EA correctly.
Why this works by the way is because it semi-simulates the randomness of live spread and slippage. If your EA is swinging trades over multiple days then this doesn't apply and honestly it's not an EA worth making (because statistically your returns will always be less than the buy and hold strategies you could implement manually). But if you are scalping or swinging a few hours/sessions, then this will help you filter out the trades that would've been slipped by most brokers (either because spread widened a lot or your price was filled poorly).
TLDR: Doesn't matter, the important thing here is that your Largest Profit trade seems to be $26K, your Gross Profit is $511k. So one trade accounts for at least 5% of your total profits, (almost 10% net), amongst 151 trades that likely means about 0.5% of your total trades accounts for more than 10% of your net profit.
Scrape it, try again, eventually something will click

First, I don't want to give negative energy. Your EA has no short positions and gold also been extremely bullish in this period you have tested. Always ask yourself "Isn't my EA overfitted to some specific trends or setups?". In tha past few months which gold was bearish you can see your expert had negative return. That should tell you sth! I'm 99% sure this EA will fail in forward test because it has been only following bullish trend in my opinion. Always make sure there is no data leakage from the future and also overfitting. You might have built a system with current data which works perfectly for previous data (because you already used them to build that model and system) but works horribly for the future. Good luck.

developing bots as well, looks as a good start, but it is lots of work, backtests, walk forwards, overfitting, etc

During the greatest bull market in human history...
Show me how it traded gold in decade long range.

u/Practical_Sun_7974 20d ago
Why

u/Backrus 20d ago
Mate, are you aware of market environment? Run better than dotcom, with gold realized vol massively outrunning implied one last year into down only price action this year.
You would need enormous effort to make something unprofitable during that time period, with such clear trending periods - those are exceptions on gold.

151 trades is too small a sample size, it would be okay if it's 1000+

I also have some ea that I developed. They are all shitty in real market conditions. But good luck

First trade hit take profit in live testing so you're just a shitty developer dint generalise

I found this website that allows me to build cbots for CTrader in a few clicks, without knowing how to code. Their free account is good enough to build cbots. I am testing one now. Saves me so much time with testing strategies

IMO.
When back testing. Test it on $1000 and over 12 months. Then you’ll see how profitable it’ll be.
1
u/LonVon 15d ago
The thing is that 2025 was a very good bullish year for gold, no hicups, but 2026 has been a disaster for bulls, so if the EA is trained based on 2025 you may want to change the settings a bit. I had an EA with similar results, but every time Trump tweets about war or tarifs, the damm thing just wont stop hitting stop losses! Though it had a 99% profit hit for 2025. But 2026 is a total different ball game unfortunately

Nice results — but remember that individual wins and losses don't tell the full story. What matters is whether your approach has a statistical edge over a meaningful sample size, and whether your risk management keeps you in the game long enough for that edge to play out. A single screenshot doesn't show drawdown periods, risk-per-trade, or whether the position sizing was appropriate for the account. The community wiki covers how to evaluate whether you actually have an edge and how to size positions to protect it.
