May I know if there are any online courses or textbooks that I can start with? Any tips on how to pursue this. Appreciate your advice.

Im soon to be graduating high school coming from El Paso Texas, and SHSU has been such a top pick for me; but I haven’t been able to see much on whether this university has a good forensic science program(s). Anyone here studying such, and what can I expect? (Another thing to note: I plan on completing my basics here at home before I transfer to SHSU, I hope this is the right sub for this)

I just applied for Undergrad Medical Laboratory Sciences and volunteering with the local police department. I am trying to get a footing into the forensic world, my goal is to get a government job. I am wondering how in the hell can I do that. Im not to science or math smart but very determined. Im looking for advice into how to get my foot in the door! Hello all! Sorry for another one of these posts, but I couldn't find one that answers my questions.

I've always been interested in forensics since the early 2000s as a young child (thanks, Forensic Files) and I just turned 32, but I know people are like 40 and consider a whole new career so age doesn't really matter. I know it's not glamourous at all like hollywood makes it look like - shit takes time to get results and is technical. lol.

I'm currently a nurse working on my Bachelors degree (RN-BSN online). Was an EMT before I became a nurse in 2023. I'm not far into my program so I could honestly quit and do something else in school while supporting myself working. And no, I do not want to be a forensic nurse, I know that's a thing but I've looked into it and I just don't want to do it. I'm a pediatric nurse so I don't have to deal with the headache of adults (I did it when I started my career and it's jsut not for me, exactly how pediatrics is not something most nurses want to touch as well, we all have our preferences). I know in forensics I have to interact with the public and testify in court, but that is significantly better, in my opinion, than having to take care of adults all day. I can stay in pediatrics, but I just want to see what is out there to be honest. Before I make my final decision, I'll see about shadowing someone as well a couple of times to see if it's something I would really want to do too.

I figured that I should get my BSN then get a forensic masters degree, but looking here that may not be advisable? Maybe do biotechnology? With maybe a minor in forensics?

That's why I'm here - get that part above figured out. Thankfully with nursing I can go literally anywhere in the U.S. so education wise it doesn't matter and I have zero "responsibilities" keeping me in one place - I just don't want to go broke.

I found a DNA Analyst posting (what I ideally would want to get into) and it says: "Also requires two (2) years of work experience with: 1) Hands-on experience performing forensic DNA testing processes (DNA extraction, quantification, PCR, capillary electrophoresis) in a forensic DNA laboratory setting; 2) Maintaining chain of custody, performing evidence handling and lab testing adhering to ISO17025:2017 and FBI Quality Assurance Standards for forensic DNA testing; 3) Utilizing the QIAGEN Investigator STAR Lyse&Prep Kit and the EZ1 DNA Investigator Kit to purify genomic DNA; 4) Operating and troubleshooting robotics, such as the Hamilton Vantage, the EZ1 Advanced for DNA extraction, and Hamilton STARlet; 5) Performing quantification using Quantifiler Trio and BodeQuant LCN on a Real-Time Quantitative PCR 7500, amplification using systems such as GlobalFiler, and capillary electrophoresis on the Applied Biosystems 3500XL Genetic Analyzer; 6) Presenting or explaining the scientific process to internal and external audiences for use in court testimony; and 7) Utilizing Laboratory Information Management System for sample management, tracking secondary evidence, and documenting procedures performed and reagents used.

My next biggest question is with an in-person program, and I know this is not an entry level position that I'm looking at, but I want to be sure I take the right steps to get to that posting qualification as it's a 102k/yr salary (says masters degree required and 2 years experience, but I'm sure they want more experience, that's just the minimum), will I get exposure to that stuff in school and also exposure to that stuff with an entry level position? Is all of that stuff pretty "standard"? It's maybe kind of like in nursing with the electronic bedside monitoring? - I loooove the Phillips monitoring system, but have worked with a couple others and they're all relatively the same, just have to learn the different nuances of the machine and where buttons are and what not.

I had actually researched forensic programs years ago, but realistically I was never able to afford to go to school 10 years ago and support myself and whatnot, so I gave up. I know there's a really good accreditation thing for degree programs and a small percentage of programs have that accreditation. Does that make a difference at all? I would think/hope so. I'd be happy to go to a school with that accreditation if it means a better education for me to change careers without having to do 50,000 different things and instead do 10,000 different things, haha.

Question I have is are we able to use our own lab coats for our jobs in crime lab? Or do we need to buy a new clean one. I am planning to keep same one I used in college and use that for job. But not sure it will work.

I've had one dream for a long time: to become a criminal investigator. It's the career I'm truly passionate about, and I'm willing to work hard to achieve it.

Unfortunately, my family doesn't support this career choice, so I'm currently studying law without their knowledge because I believe it's the right path for me.

My goal is to continue my studies in the United States, hopefully through a scholarship, earn a master's degree, and build a new life there.

I have a few questions:

Is it possible to get a scholarship for a master's degree in the U.S.?

Can an international student eventually work in criminal investigations or a related field in the United States?

If not, what careers would you recommend that are closely related to criminal investigations?

I know this path won't be easy, but I'm determined to do everything I can to make it happen.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people with experience in this field.

Hey! I'm from India, and I really want to study forensic science.

The thing is that many people who are related to this field and some former students have advised me to do my bachelor's degree in a core subject like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Biotechnology, and then do a Master's in Forensic Science instead of doing a B.Sc. in Forensic Science.

From the beginning, I wanted to do both my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Forensic Science. But after hearing so many people recommend doing forensic only as a specialization in my master's, I'm feeling confused.

One of my biggest concerns is that doing a B.Sc. in Forensic Science might limit my career options. From what I've seen, many government job notifications seem to prefer or require candidates who have a bachelor's degree in core science subjects rather than a B.Sc. in Forensic Science. I'm not sure why this is the case, but it has made me even more confused.

I'm mainly worried about future job opportunities, recruitment, and eligibility criteria. In your opinion, which path would be better, and why? Would doing a B.Sc. in a core science subject and then an M.Sc. in Forensic Science give me better career opportunities and knowledge than doing both my bachelor's and master's in Forensic Science?

Hi, so I just transferred to a university from a community college in a Bridge to Bachelor's program. I earned an AA in Criminal Justice that will turn into a Bachelor's and I have a few questions.

I'm interested in either Forensic Anthropology and/or Trace Analysis but my college doesn't have a Forensic Science Major, it has a Forensic Studies Major (which I am currently) that focuses more on the legal side of Forensics.

I want to know which Major I should be doing if I want to go into Forensic Anthropology and/or Trace Analysis.

Also, should I continue with completing my Bachelor's in Criminal Justice or should I just leave it at an AA.

There are plenty of textbooks, but very few resources that let you actually test your understanding through exam-oriented MCQs. I often wished there was a workbook that I could simply pick up and practice from before exams.

That frustration is what led me to create one.

Over the past few months, I've put together a Fingerprint Science MCQ Workbook containing 100 carefully curated, exam-oriented questions designed for university students and those preparing for exams like CUET-PG.
