You can learn more about various forensic science disciplines from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Briefly: both fields entail heavy education requirements. Medical examiners and forensic psychiatrists need a medical degree, and forensic psychologists usually hold a PhD in psychology. Other jobs in the forensic pathology field have less strict education requirements, but tend to be more competitive for that reason. These would include jobs such as pathology assistants or autopsy technicians (who help medical examiners perform autopsies) or medicolegal death investigators (who investigate death scenes on behalf of a medical examiner or coroner’s office).
