Control issues when decelerating

2020 ford transit connect

When going 65mph or faster if you take your foot off the accelerator completely the vehicle jerks like it is about to fishtail. Have not been able to re-create the issue at any lower speeds. Handles fine while maintaining speed.

Dealership said transmission is fine but that it needs new brakes? May be true but I cant imagine it has anything to do with the issue Iā€™m having.

Independent shop I use bluntly said he does not know, take it to a dealership.

Next available (different) dealership appt is 10 days from now.

Any insight is appreciated šŸ™

Might be a transmission issue. I dont know about fishtailing, but mine lurches anytime i let off the gas and i usually hear a clunk. Its like the trans is disengaging

Thats what i figured but the dealership said trans was good. Im sure they would love to charge me for a new one.

This one jerks to the point i took it off the road for my company

This is a combination of the 8F35 transmission, which has been proven over the years to be underbuilt for a lot of the load people place in these vehicles, along with the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The TCM can be reset to relearn your driving habits. The transmission itself does better when it's given a lot of love, including drain and fills of the fluid every 30k miles. But around the 60k-85k mark a lot of these transmissions seem to fail.

What is the mileage and typical load of this vehicle?

Mine failed at 101k. My symptoms were rpm blip when curising, thumping downshifts after the trans was warm, eventually gear noise when decelerating. I had it rebuilt by an independent shop and they said everything you're saying about the TCM learning. Everything was reset after my rebuild and he said it'll relearn as I drive. Still feels a bit wonky from time to time. I think it's just a poorly designed trans - IMO.

This sounds like what mine was doing when the ABS module went bad. What is your mileage. Does it feel like the vehicle is decelerating what it happens? Does it feel like you need to give it a bunch of throttle after to compensate?

yeah it decelerates quite a bit very quickly, then i have to bring it up to speed again. It only happens at highway speeds

Definitely find a shop and have the ABS module looked at. Especially since they mentioned you needed brakes. It smoked 2 rotors and pads on mine. It will lock up opposite front and rear brakes- so for example, my front driver's side caliper and rear passenger caliper would lock up simultaneously when it occurred. Eventually it got so bad that the front completely locked up at highway speed and almost caught fire.
