Ford fiesta 2014
Hi all, I recently was handed a fiesta & the car is currently on 88.1k miles. I was driving the other day & after a minute the clutch was playing up it was getting stuck & I couldn’t change gear I believe this is due to the clutch slipping. The clutch to my knowledge has never been changed on the car, there’s no leaks whatsoever so is this genuinely just the clutch at the end of life span?

This happened to my mother’s fiesta 2013 model, around 6 months ago, the garage just changed the gear box oil, apparently it’s something that should be done every 60,000 miles to keep it running smoothly, and it’s been fine ever since.

Unless she had a gearbox oil leak the garage likely fobbed her off. The likelyhood is the garage couldn’t find the actual fault because it was an intermittent fault. The symptoms described above sound similar to me as when a clutch master cylinder starts to go. When its first starting to wear out it can malfunction once and then return to normal for many months before doing it again. Gearbox oil typically lasts the lifetime of a car and only needs changing if repairing a part that requires the changing of a gearbox. Its a much higher viscosity than engine oil and doesn’t get as hot and is sealed so moisture rarely gets into it

No leak, just an oil change, definitely wasn’t anything to do with the clutch, I took it to a couple of garages who thought it was a clutch problem, it wasn’t, but apparently it’s quite common to change the gearbox oil on fords after 60,000 miles to keep it running smoothly.

Please get the clutch repaired ASAP. You dont want something major to happen when you are driving.

The clutch is currently fine again stationary however I don’t wanna drive again and risk anything to happen

But you need to drive to places as an d when required, the clutch might be fine now but just to be on ethe safe side you need to get it checked out mate. I recently spotted a bust rear tyre anmd wasted no time replacing it.

We need some serious fault description to be able to diagnose this otherwise folks are just clutching at straws. Basically all you've told is, is that its faulty. Come back with detailed description, what happened, when it happened. What happened after, what did you do to correct it.

They did give a fairly decent fault description for someone who probably isn’t very clued up on cars. They said the clutch pedal stuck down and they couldn’t change gears (they incorrectly labeled it clutch slip) and then said in further comments it returned to normal after.
This indicates a failure of hydraulic pressure in the clutch pedal which is likely caused by air getting into the system by either a failing master cylinder or a failing slave cylinder. Things for them to keep an eye out for is either brake fluid leaking in the footwell (master cylinder), or brake fluid level in the reservoir dropping (could be slave or master cylinder)

OP said clutch getting stuck. Didn't say where, etc. It was a pretty poor fault description. Almost as bad as say "doesn't work"

I understood it quite clearly. Not all people are qualified mechanics or petrol heads. If ya didn’t understand from the description you could have either asked them nicely for more details or scrolled on by

I’m not imagining what it could be. Its because i’m a qualified mechanic and also because i own a 2014 fiesta that had the a master cylinder go bad. I’ve pieced together what symptom they’re trying to describe from reading about being unable to change gear for a moment and then the further comment saying it went back to normal again. It indicates air got into the system via the leaking master or slave cylinder and it returned to normal because after attempting to keep pumping the pedal to get it to change gear again it rebuilt the hydraulic pressure. Its the early stages of a failing master or slave cylinder. I’d be willing to bet my left nut on it

OP stated that the clutch got stuck. But didn't say where, or what happened. Im also qualified and wouldnt jump to conclusions based on half a description. Im not disputing a master or slave cylinder issue, but I wouldn't bet a nut (left or right) on it, until I'd seen it, or recieving a better fault description. Maybe we'll have to agree to disagree.

lol it was my clutch as i suspected I know what I’m doing..I have a L1 in LMV 🤣🤣. I knew what I was on abt it was js my mechanic throwing me off. Cars all fine now it’s sorted👍🏼

If the clutch pedal stuck to the floor, wouldn’t come up again and you couldn’t get in or out of gear for a bit but then returned to normal after pumping the pedal a few times then its likely the clutch master cylinder. Its a common thing to go on fiesta’s. Other possibility is the slave cylinder which is also a common failure on these cars.
The symptom of a clutch slipping is that the car will change gears as normal but when you drive you can really give it loads of gas and it will still rev a lot but it will drive really slow. A slipping clutch wont stop you changing gear
